If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

I couldn’t even tell you if the characters are still one offs, as I’d expect them to have dragged them through the mud of newer episodes.

Rex Banner
Lurleen Lumpkin (pretty sure I did see she was in a newer one)
Frank Grimes
Larry Burns
The Dean from Homer Goes To College
AHA!

All brilliant characters. Watching Bart vs Australia and the US government minister is pretty great as well. I love the way he says 'Americo-Australianian relations.'

Also: 'Mr. Simpson, shush! Disparaging the boot is a bootable offence.' ;D

Yes I was thinking him too. Was that Phil Hartman too?

The show was never the same after he was killed

Yeah it was Phil Hartman. Yeah, he voiced some brilliant characters, Lyle Lanley was probably the best one episode character but the one in Bart vs Australia just cracked me up when I was watching it today.

Abe Simpson: I used to be with 'it', but then they changed what 'it' was. Now what I'm with isn't 'it' anymore and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

This and 'it was the style at the time' are Grandpa's two best moments for me. I've said the above to my partner before (she's only 3 years younger but seems to have enough of a gap that she doesn't understand some of the cultural touchpoints I bring up) whenever she talks about new music she likes that I've never heard of.

I'm glad someone took the time to make it, because I was watching a few minutes of the funeral and when they were singing I thought of that scene  ;D

Just ranked this as probably my favourite show of all time in the Top 10 TV Shows Thread.

Can't beat the comedy, some of the pathos and heartfelt moments. Nothing was better for 7 or 8 seasons in the early days.

Yep, within seasons 3-9, it was probably some of the finest TV ever, let alone the finest animation ever.

For me, The Wire and The Simpsons are the best ever TV shows.

Agreed, The Wire makes my Top 5 easy.

The Simpsons has all the combinations for me - hilarious, comedic, visually interesting, heartfelt and nostalgic. The best episodes still hold up as examples of phenomenal comedy writing. I challenge anyone to find me a leaner, better executed script of comedy writing than Swartzwelder's Homer at the Bat.

I was laughing to myself for a good two minutes yesterday when a colleague said of the Queen 'her legend will live on' and the first thing that popped into my head was 'yeah, legend of the dog-faced woman.' I reference and quote the show so much, it's almost an illness.

I will say something and get odd looks from the wife, kids or co workers

;D

It happened last night, my partner and I were talking about some odd interview experiences we've had in the past. I worked at Aldi for a few years in my early 20s and they did two really odd things, one definitely ethically questionable. The Director would leave his coat on the floor in his office as if it had fallen off the rack. If you didn't offer to pick it up when you came in, he wouldn't employ you.

The first stage interview was a big group thing where they'd actually be watching you all as a group in the lobby through the CCTV to see who was visibly interacting with other candidates. This is my waffling way of saying that when we were discussing this, I started singing 'travelled the world and the seven seas, I am watching, you through a camera.'

Maximum Homerdrive has just been on (who says the great episodes ended after s9?  :P) and this bit always kills me:

A group of truckers are after Homer after he blabs about the Navi-Tron auto-drive system.

Bart: He hit us!

Homer: Oh, I should have known. They're hazing us to initiate us into the truckers' fraternity.

[ truck rams Homer's ]

Homer: Thank you, sir! May I have another?

I'm gone there

And then...

Bart: Dad, they're trying to kill us!

Homer: Oh, why do all my trips end like this?

 :lmao

And then, after he's evaded them...

Trucker: Boys, I've been thinking. Maybe it's time we ditched the high-tech gizmos... and went back to driving like our daddies did.

Another trucker: Drunk?

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Hurricane Neddy.

Kent Brockman: And the weather service has warned us to brace ourselves for the onslaught of Hurricane Barbara. And if you think naming a destructive storm after a woman is sexist, you obviously have never seen the gals grabbing for items at a clearance sale.

Marge: That's true... but he shouldn't say it.

Flanders: [after cleaning his glasses, but the lenses fall out and puts his glasses back on as he tries to calm himself down, understanding that the townspeople has done their best] Now, calm down, Neddly diddily diddily diddily, doodily. They did their best shoddilyddily iddily iddily diddily diddily. Gotta be nice, hostilitydidildilidilly... [unable to control his emotions and instead, starts to snap] AW, HELL-DIDDLY-DING-DONG-CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN'T YOU MORONS DO ANYTHING RIGHT??!?!?!?!?! [everyone gasps]

Marge: Ned! We meant well, and everyone here tried their best.

Flanders: (to Marge) Well, my family and I can't live in good intentions, Marge! Oh, your family's out of control, but we can't blame you, because you have gooood intentions!

Bart: Hey! Back off, man!

Flanders: (to Bart) Ooh, okay, duuuuuuude, I wouldn't want you to have a cow, MAAAAAAAAAAN! Here's a catchphrase you'd better learn for your adult years: "Hey, buddy, GOT A QUARTER?!" [everyone gasps]

Bart: I am shocked and appalled.

Lisa: Mr. Flanders, with all due respect, Bart didn't do anything.

Flanders: (sarcastic gasp of surprise and to Lisa) Do I hear the sound of butting in? It's got to be little Lisa Simpson, Springfield's answer to a a QUESTION NO ONE ASKED!

Chief Wiggum: (laughs)

Flanders: (to Wiggum) What do we have here? The long flabby arm of the law? The last case you got the bottom of WAS A CASE OF MALLOWMARS!

Krusty: [opening a notebook] Mallomars, oh, haha. That's going in the act. [begins writing].

Flanders: (to Krusty) Oh yeah, the clown. The only one of you buffoons who doesn't make me laugh! [Krusty ignores him].

(to Lenny) And as for YOU, I don't know you, but I'm sure you're a jerk!

Lenny: Hey, I've only been here a few minutes! What's going on?

Flanders: (to Moe) You ugly, hate-filled man

Moe: [acting bravely]. Hey, hey, I may be ugly and hate-filled, but I... um, what was the third thing you said?

Flanders: (to his neighbor Homer, coldly and quietly) Homer, you are the worst human being I have ever met.

Homer: Hey, I got off pretty easy.

The writing in that scene is perfection. It grows and grows, the insults to Lenny and Moe are spectacular (and their responses) and you think it's climaxing into a physical attack, then there's the bathos of him calmly informing Homer that he's the worst person he's ever met.

In the den?! May God have mercy on us all!
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

Yeah, Moe's tongue tied response is hilarious, best one is the crowd backing off as Ned approaches Homer, then Homer thinking he got off lightly with what is a cleaver insult. ;D
