Easiest job ever.

Just refuse to pick up the phone for the next two years and put a few reminders in the calendar to order birthday cakes when a players birthday comes up.

None of us know exactly what his role has been in previous decisions or deals, but what we can see is Klopp was clearly asked his view on it ("I was delighted when he told me he would be accepting the position" shows he knew about it first) and going by the rest of his comments he is happy with him being in that role.

To me it looks like we've somewhat split the CEO role in two, sporting and business. Edwards has taken on the sporting side of things and we will no doubt either see Gordon take on the rest of the other side, or someone come in solely to concentrate on that. Which makes sense to me.

Also find it telling the official release specifically mentions "taking primary responsibility for reviewing and implementing improvements to the training ground environment and infrastructure." - almost certainly means combining the Melwood and Kirkby is going to happen at some point soon.

I doubt that's changed, Edwards is just the one (along with others) who will get the deals over the line.

Highly doubt they'll want to remove him from the commercial side of the club, plus doesn't he run that side of things from London? So would no doubt mean being back up here.

It sounds like Jürgen is very happy with it and so am I. Seems a forward thinking move, towards what Klopp had (and worked so well with) at Dortmund. I think it has probably been in the pipeline for a while, at least since the manager's contract extension in the summer.

He's being described as the club's first Sporting Director, but didn't Comolli have a similar title by the end?

So is it like Football Manager?  Edwards puts some numbers in and it lets Klopp know how good they are on a scale of 1 to 5?

Internal promotion, got a raise and a new title.  A bit of a portfolio change maybe, but I think he was doing something similar all along.

Congrats on the salary raise ;) ehehhehehe

Certainly a different role to what Comolli did (where he called pretty much most of the shots on all player recruitment). This looks to be essentially taking on the sporting elements of Ayre's job, with what he already did thrown in for good measure.

Jurgen said in the prematch press conference today, when asked about this, nothing has changed. Every player we get is his player. He has 100% control.

He also said only in England ( media and punters) would this be such a big deal.  :lmao

It is true because a sporting director is the norm in the rest of Europe.  I think the reason why it's important over there is because where they have a presidential system there's more need for a go between the Manager and Board.

I'm not sure why we need one but it's what Klopp's used to and he seems happy.

Not really arsed myself.  I'm more interested in whether or not he's enjoying his crown green bowling.  Should be asking him about that. He said it's fascinating so it'd make him happy to discuss it.

The absolute crux of the issue.

Just lovely to have a united front at the Club an no one feeling the need for off the record press briefings. That for me is what happens when you have a top class, ultra strong manager with a proven track record. Not to mention a huge personality unifying the club and driving it forwards.

The only slight worry is going all in with a manager but if you were going to choose a manager to do it with then Klopp is deffo the best choice.

that's actually the opposite of what is happening, as Kloppo himself explained. In England, when a manager comes in, everything has to change,  cos he's the boss and has his own ways of working.

With a sporting director, you have that base that allows for smooth transition.

Like when Kloppo left BVB, there wasn't a huge upheaval, cos Michael Zorc and Aki Watzke (CEO) where still there, brought in a new coach and assistant who didn't expect to be given all the power, and off they went.

aargh so you mean similar to a Director of football.

So when Kenny left it was a good job Comolli was around to smooth over the transition period.
