So many stories and memories for Tommy.
Some of us elders may recall The Kop singing “Tommy’s gonna get yer” when one of the opposition tried clattering him.
He was there at the beginning, my earliest memory of us winning a pot was the FA Cup in 65.
He of course scored in Rome in 77. His testimonial was a thing of legend.
But not many may recall, the FA semi at Main Rd that year saw a terrible late high and cowardly challenge by Mick Buckley on Tommy. He was ruled out of the replay after the game. Apparently the medical staff said he shouldn’t walk on the injured leg for a couple of days and then they would see.
He trained on the Monday.
He played on the Wednesday.
That sort of courage was his undoing later in life. His knees were destroyed, and he suffered a lot of pain.
He was hard, but he was also a bloody good footballer. We will never see his like again.
Rest now, The Anfield Iron
As a postscript I recall Terry Mac nailing Buckley right in front of the Kippax with a thunderous block tackle. (All legal) and as Buckley lay there, MacDermott looked down and said “Fuck off you shithouse.” He did.
