I always wished that they would make a new series called Starfleet Command and make it like West Wing meets Star Trek.

I thought Starfleet Academy could be good for some story lines as well but now prefer your idea Command would probably be a little more adult and less Star Trek meets High School musical.

As lazy as the writers become though, despite Starfleet Command probably being one of the most secure places in the galaxy, some alien would get in somehow each week. It's much easier doing that than coming up with engaging drama. Oh and there would be a load of time travel.

Well I always imagined a father / son combo with the son enrolled in the academy to do subplots with, but would try and keep the focus on the adults.  I think most of it would be the head honchos having to deal with making decions based on a small amount of data many lightyears away that have tremendous consequences for all kinds of different humanoid races.  A very difficult balance.  Plus I think it would give the show a chance to get really creative with how cool the technology would get and they could always say that it would have taken too much energy to put something like it on the ships.  Also I want to see what regular human beings lives are like in this future world where I would guess a lot of aliens would be living amongst us.

It's about time Elephants got a starring role in science fiction series.

It could be a bit like Alien meets Star Trek meets Dark Star Beachball meets Silent Running meets Baa Baa

Spot on easily the best feature length piece be it a film or a 2 part episode. The Borg were completely over done from then it was like 'oh we're short of a story.....I  know lets bring back the Borg'

Agreed. It was ludicrous in Voyager. Same applies to Q.

One of the (many) reasons Deep Space Nine was the best series...

I thought so too.

But I also liked Enterprise more than Voyager;   Have a thing for Bakula plus T'pol was pretty hot.

The double show that you referred to as Best of Both Worlds, was it a feature or was it The Next Generation, or DS9 or what?

Actually, I've since googled it. That was a good show.

Yes probably the best although there was another where Picard gets probed and whilst unconscious lives an entire lifetime on a world courtesy of the memories they left behind in the probe before the world was destroyed. He wakes up remembering everything and by doing so carries the memories of an otherwise forgotten civilisation. He also brings back an ability to play a musical instrument(cant remember what it was called but looks like a large recorder) which gets referred to again in a later episode.Excellent episode that one really interesting and a little sad. That one and Best of Both Worlds are Star Trek at its best.

I do remember that one, Picard had kids and all, as I recall. There was another episode where Picard defends himself against a Command investigation, where I seem to remember thinking he was the greatest lawyer of all time.

That one is called "The Inner Light".. excellent I agree, was on tv the other day. TNG is my favourite star trek. Liked DS9 too but found it a bit annoying the way, if you missed an episode or two, you fall behind on the story.. whereas you could watch TNG in any order and it doesnt make much difference.

I was going to bring up that part of DS9, I think that makes it better.  I have only watched DS9 in DVD form, so I could crank out a bunch or even whole seasons fairly quickly and in order.  I know it wasn't the first show to do this, but you see a lot of this now in shows like Lost, 24, etc.    And another reason why I would want Abrams to create the next series if there ever is one.

Once DS9 got into the continuing story it got really good. The first couple of series were not that great for me.

Overall though, I prefer TNG. STar Trek is very character driven and they had the best characters for me. And some really stand out episodes, like Best of Both Worlds, The Inner Light, Yesterday's Enterprise, All Good Things..., Future Imperfect, Data's Day, Disaster, Conundrum, Cause and Effect, Chain of Command, Tapestry, Birthright (only the first part, though), Starship Mine, Parallels....and many more. In really kicked off once Roddenberry died, and stayed strong until the end.

TNG was just pure science fiction crack...the writers could still be arsed to come up with interesting stories without resorting to to the time travel crap on Enterprise.  DS9 got better the more they fleshed out the Dominion threat though - I think it was in response to the direction Babylon 5 was taking at the time.

Agreed that the continuing story arc of the Dominion War MADE DS9. Still think it had some cracking, cracking one off episodes that at least stand alongside anything done in any other series.

Far Beyond The Stars is probably one of the best episodes of Star Trek ever, if not the best for me. Other ones that spring to mind are the one with the Cardassian who pretended to be the bloke who murdered millions of Bajorans because he felt guilty. Some real power behind the stories.

Also the recurring characters had much more depth. Garak and Dukat were two of the best characters written for any series.

When I woke this morning literally the first thought in my head was 'it was called The Inner Light, numpty for not remembering the title last night'
Have recently started watching DS9 on DvD am currently about half way through the second series so far a little dissapointing but I caught the odd episode of later series when it was originally shown so I know it warms up but its taking its time.

Is that the one where Jake's an old man and Sisko got killed and he obsesses over it and then kills himself to reverse everything? Cracking episode that one, probably the best Jake centred episode (and, alas, barely featured the actor playing Jake, who I'd wager had less screen time than any of the full-time cast members and a fair few of the part time ones...)

You know what, I actually did a little memory refreshing there on the interweb, and this was a class epidose. Firstly, it had Vash who was hot as all hell, then it had Worf smashing a mandolin off a tree and saying "sorry", Q was being his usual bollocky self, and finally this memorable exchange between Sir Guy and Picard, mid duel with swords...

"I'll have you know I'm the greatest swordsman in all of Nottingham!"
"Very impressive. There's something you should know."
"And what would that be?"
"I'm not from Nottingham!"

That was lifted almost directly from the legendary sword fight in The Princess Bride, by the way, and the Worf thing was after Animal House, but this was tv nearly twenty years ago, folks, and you really should give them a break.

Most satisfying trailer so far. Interesting that Nero says something about Kirk being a great man, but in another life? Hints at alternate time lines, and that planet being destroyed looks suspiciously like Vulcan. Hummmm?!?!? Points to ponder for Trekkie's like me!
