Nice to get the 3 points but we got away with it there. Alisson definitely man of the match. I thought we were terrible going forward, yet come away with 2 goals. There is no fluidity in attack, no taking first time shots, everything is too deliberate and over-thought. Still in with  a slight chance of top 4 tho.

Southampton are the worst team in the division this calendar year, so it should have been easier than this, and by the sounds of things we were inviting them to equalise. I don't see how we can beat Man U, assuming they rotate against Leicester (who will therefore win) but for now, any win will do.

We were actually fairly comfortable in the second half, and more so the longer it went on for. Obviously didn't feel like that given our last two matches, but we were much more dominant than the first half.

I never wanna see Fabinho at centre back again even if the only options are nat and rhys...unless we have the ghosts of masch, xabi and stevie in midfield.

Our MF was ...  not good tonight - as was our CBs (because of Fab and Thiago being generally pooor defensively) - Nat and Rhys make Maguire look like a 100m sprinter!  If Hendo is back fit, and the other options are Rhys and Nat, I personally would prefer to see Hendo in CB and Fab DM, but could do equally as well the other way.  Our MF had zero organisation at all tonight which we miss badly when Hendo is out.  Just lucky Saints have zero premier league level strikers when Danny is injured.

If we play this defence against the mancs we will have one or two problems more than today.

Not the best performance by any stretch of the imagination but that'll more than do. For a while it looked as though we'd make a mess of it like we did against Leeds and Newcastle but we held our composure.

Worryingly Southampton did look fitter though.

Indeed. It’s great to win, and arguably on sheer chances we deserved it.

But it’s very worrying to note just how few 50/50s we won - let alone second balls. We were profligate on occasions, but so were Saints, particularly Redmond, though in his case it’s normal.

The ‘legs’ of this team seem to have just gone. The only saving grace is the knowledge that we are more often than not very sluggish after a decent rest.

I'm not disagreeing with what you are saying but I'd rather Fabinho play midfield and risk it with them two than play centre back and have zero protection in midfield and a sub par midfielder coming in given our current options..

Just the reality of even more injuries the fact it was disjointed, added no game for 2 weeks. Would have been a bit more solid with Kabak and Milner in there. With Phillips and Williams at CB together it really emboldens a fast attack.

We saw the second half out better than the last couple of games. We kept the ball better in the second half which we simply didn't do in those games. Southampton had one or two chances second half and that was it.

Phillips was great, I thought Williams was quite good too. A few hairy moments but probably to be expected.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but our attacks almost look over coached, that is slightly worrying. Amd we have a severe lack of pace or we seem be told NOT to sprint in certain situations. Not sure what it is..?
