That's complete bollox mate and SF aren't the only political party in Ireland who would like to see a united Ireland, most if not all would, most notably Fianna Fail. It's also in our constitution that the will of the Irish people is have a united Ireland one day something i wholeheartedly agree with. Don't want to get into an argument over this, but that's just my view.
I would say easily that the majority of the Republic wants a United Ireland but what would i know i only live here.

I don't. Nobody I know does.

I would say that most of my friends and family would gravatate from a people who want United Ireland and people who dont care. The only misgiving i would have is that we're incapable of running 26 counties adding another 6 would be a disaster, kind of a biggy.

Finger a bit off the pulse there. In the south SF do well among young voters so I'm guessing that's why they're doing so well on here. They also perform well in working class areas so as Football is more our less a working class sport that may be another reason why they're ahead.

I would say easily that the majority of the Republic wants a United Ireland but what would i know i only live here.
Those were my thoughts as well on SF in the South but wasn't 100% sure.

Thats what I've wondererd about being from the pro-British rule side.

NI is an expensive place to run and a big drain on British resources. So how would the South cope with those 6 extra counties? Is it practically possible?

They have 4 out of 166 seats in the Irish parliament. This poll is well out of whack.

I don't know too much about it, but I wouldn't imagine so, even during the boom. I doubt any of the leading parties would want to 'join' with the north, at least not until it's self-sustainable.

Coming from one of the few towns that SF toped the polls  in, my view on how popular SF are also could be a bit skewed.

it would be good to see some economists on a documentary talking about the feasability of joining the 2 sections, as i think too many of us are confused as to whether it would actually work. Id like to think so.. but to be fair, i have no idea of whether we would sink or swim

Everybody in my extended Family wants a united Ireland. My father (68) has said all his life that he would love to see the day it happens, but doesnt think it will happen in his lifetime.

On the other side of the coin, if Ireland and the north joined, we would an economic meltdown which would dwarf the current recession 100fold.

I live here as well.

I think there's a miscommunication here. Yes the majority of people say they want a united ireland, etc etc etc, HOWEVER, when they are actually presented with the ramifications of what that will cost them, how much time it will take, what they'll have to do, how they'll have to make changes etc etc etc  you'll find the idea isn't so appealing

Irish Uni-faction is a pipe dream that will not benefit either side of the border. Ideals are great, the reality is not so great.

My argument is simple, it's a nice thought to have a united ireland, most nationalists would say they want it.

However, if you said to them, well it's going to cost you a X% raise in taxes etc etc they'd say no. The reason for this is that it's just not that important. I mean look at NI now, it's very different to how it was when I was growing up there, there's equality etc etc (for the most part, it takes time).

What is the actual benefit to a NI resident to be part of the ROI? we've got equality, what's in a name, if you want to be considered Irish you can, it's not like the UK are treating you like shit, they're treating you better probably than the Irish gov can

also if we get a united ireland where will all the irish go shopping :)
