I'm struggling a little with this today. Remembering the feelings after the match. The sheer delight that we were top in Europe after all that time. It now feels like we are further away than ever.

On the other hand I'll letting that memory carry me for the return to glory.

I just remember stumbling around the stadium with my brother, both of us in a daze, not talking, trying to take into account the fact that we were European Champions.

Just bumping this magnificent thread after seeing the link on another thread. Quality stuff

Someone should write a book, or perhaps pen a play or maybe even make a film about Istanbul, that would be great.

Best night of my life bar none.

All the memories from Istanbul are still so vivid in my mind inc. the great time we had at Taksim square the day/night before the game.

I remember getting to the stadium in a taxi with 5 cases of beer & bottles of vodka/whiskey/rum - my pals (who'd got there an hour or so before) were like rabid dogs when they saw the booze.  They'd rung me earlier to say that there was only non-alcoholic beer(?) being served so I was pretty loved right then.    ;D

Later on watching in awe as - what seemed like - thousands of Reds marching through the turkish countryside to get to the stadium.

Funnily enough I was going through some of my old stuff in the loft the other day and I found a few bits from Istanbul.
My match ticket, a programme, a metal pin badge from the final along with a couple of things i wouldn't normally buy - a tshirt and a cap which have both got a cityscape of istanbul printed on them with the words "I was there".

Dunno why I got them but I'm glad I did.  My lad was only a toddler in '05 but he's heard & watched so much about that European Cup campaign that he was absolutely made up when I gave the stuff to him.
His response : "I can't wait until our next CL final - I'm definitely going with you !"   :scarf

I remember watching the '81 & '84 finals when I was about the same age as my lad is now and dreaming of going to a final to cheer our lads on.
It was a long wait to finally get there but boy was it was worth it !

In my heart I believe my lad won't have to wait as long as I did to see us in another european cup final.
When he gets to go it'll be great - just not as good as Istanbul !   ;)

Threads like this one will never get old, the OP is absolute gold and took me right back there.

Every little detail of that trip (we were in Istanbul for a frigging week !) is as crystal clear as if it was last week.  Please god it happens again.

What a fantastic bump.

Can't believe we are close now to 10 years down the line, our club has gone through the mill that's for sure.

My main memories were travelling on my own and making loads of new mates, finding my hostel and sleeping with my tickets and money down my pants as I was convinced I was going to get robbed in the night.

I remember just walking the streets to get back to my hostel after the game and being a like a zombie, not talking or thinking, just brain was mush.

Great times.

Likewise, a week that'll never be rivalled. Was luckly enough to get on my plane at close to the designated take off time and arrive back in Liverpool for the homecoming.
I remember getting to back to dublin on the saturday and it seemed every second person was sporting a Liverpool jersey. What a time to be a red!!!!

Those were the days, these will be those days again.

Thirteen Years since Istanbul. Lucky, Lucky, Lucky, Lucky, Liverpool.

I've spent the last few days seeing people I know start their own journeys across Europe, much as I started mine back in 2005. I am (obviously) insanely jealous, but my main emotion is absolute pride in our people. Get in, Reds. Bring Shiny Number Six home. :scarf
