As both go into the Europa League now it makes no fucking difference apart from a couple of extra qualifying games.

Actually glad we never finished 4th (well not really as Kenny may have still been here) after last night.  Imagine waking up this morning knowing Chelsea have won the CL and so dumped us into the Europa?

Good luck Spurs fans  ;D

Here we go. Wouldn't a better question be CL or Carling cup?

The vast majority of seasons 4th place will guarantee CL qualifying.

For me it depends on the season.

This is doing the rounds but it only rings true to a degree. I'm afraid kids and players now dream about playing in the champions league, not winning the carling cup...or even the fa cup really.

I'd say that right now is the least I've ever been in love with the game.

It's virtually the same only one gives you an ugly, embarassing, Disney sponsored silver trophy that nobody really wants. Then you have to spend days, even weeks thinking on where to hide it so nobody ever reminds you of the embarassement. Ah, life is so difficult sometimes but best decisions are ones made firmly in advance, like trophy or two more-less you still get the sack. With such approach you can rest assured that if nothing else you'll have enough time to put things right, even if the decision you made is wrong. But then you remember that ugly silver trophy and it keeps you up at night, it's haunting you, calling your name and singing 'Fields of Anfield road' in glaswegian accent.

Ah..life.
Never how you imagine it should be and the things you crave almost never come from the expected direction. By the time you realise and turn around to meet them your shadow has insulted them and they've left.

massive potential for egg on face if we don't get through the 3rd qualifying round and then the play-off round...

Having seen last nights' result I prefer winning the LC (hindsight), however any other season would prefer 4th, please.

Both, and I don't see why they couldn't have been achieved either, since when did we get so pleased about winning the League Cup it could excuse a generally abysmal league campaign?

It's what dreams are made of, an equaliser to get you to 69 points in a season, twenty off the title.

Jumpers for goalposts.

Thank fuck we didn't come fourth this year. Would have been an even more bitter pill to swallow.

Plastics will say top four.

Match going fans will say a cup final/winning a cup.

I don't spend 45quid a match 2 celebrate pinching a top four places when playing Wigan. Going down to Wembley, winning a cup on penalties. One of the best days i have ever had. It that 'buzz' you get, you don't get that in a league game, or on your sofa.

Depends who your asking really. If you asked a fan who attends a lot of games it would be the Carling Cup, If you asked a manager or owner of a club it would be Champions League or if you asked a player it would be more than likely Champions league too.

Highest league position possible and both cups. 4th is better than 8th! Not having that we didn't come first so no point attitude.

it's easy scoff at scoring the goal that wins you fourth,
but all those great CL memories we have in recent years, came from finishing in the top 4.

Come on now ffs, your now happy with Liverpool fc not challenging for the league title and being competitive in the league over winning the smallest cup competition in england?
I went that final and I have to say, I was underwhelmed, I honestly don't know what all the fuss was about, it was as if we hadn't won any silverware in 50 years. Also the manner in which we won it, Cardiff city, going to penalties...
We need to be in Europe for lots of reasons, for me it's competing with the best teams in the land for the biggest trophy in world football only bettered by the world cup. It's where Liverpool belongs, we've won it how many times now? But by saying you would rather win the carling cup above being 4th, your effectively saying your happy competing with the likes of fulham and sunderland, Swansea.... Wigan. Instead of are old rivals, we have competed with since the days of old for the title of best team in England.

The league is our bread and butter, I want to see progress in that thanks.

Most on here defended Rafa's right to prioritise finishing in the top four over progress in domestic cups - I won't be a hypocrite by not defending our new owners the right to want us to do the same under their stewardship.

It's a stupid b0llocks argument anyway, as the Americans have never set such an ultimatum.  Kenny got sacked having garnered 52 points in the league, the single worst points tally of the modern era after one of the biggest summer spends in our history which came after one of the biggest January spends in our history.

All the Americasn have said is they want us to progress in the league, qualify for the champions league because it creates more revenue, you can attract better players and ultimately give you a more competitive team to finish higher in the league and win domestic and european trophies.

For what it's worth, I think they've got the Kenny decision completely and utterly wrong but this fixation on the importance they place on qualifying for the champions league is embarrassing.  I agree with them on that part - it's absolutely crucial we get back in champions league as soon as possible, and if we can pick up domestic trophies along the way then fcking great.  They're not demanding anything different than the demands Rafa placed upon himself.

Fair point although you could say that's the owner's decision. Maybe if more people thought the way I do and emphasise trophies over fourth place, they would have found it much harder to sack Kenny.

That is brave!

I do struggle with this debate.  In truth we shouldn't have to choose between the two as we should be capable of challenging on multiple fronts.  For me getting back into the CL gives us money to allow us to strengthen the squad so we can challenge on more fronts.

Question is whether it is right to concentrate on the league over the cups for a season or two?

to be honest I don't think getting 4th and winning the CC would have kept Kenny in his job.

Next season though I can see FSG saying 3rd is a minimum target for this club.  :P

Hindsights a beautiful thing, isn't it? All good and well everyone saying they'd rather have done it through the Carling Cup win now that 4th, but nobody even imagined that sequence of events at the beginning of the season, and 90% of you, if asked, Carling cup and 8th place or 4th place and Champions League (with the prospect of your Barcas and Madrids coming to Anfield on a Wednesday night, with the opportunity to attract the next big-name player like Hazard, with the chance to strengthen the squad and make a push for the title next season), would have undoubtedly responded with a resounding 4th place cheers
