As a squad player pushing for a start a very good signing. If he is the only creative player we bring in to replace Coutinho then MEH.
Did you really feel we suffered a lot since Coutinho left? If anything ball movement has been much better.

The ball movement may of improved but our ability to win games when we had 60-70% possession diminished. We lacked creativity against a low block. Shaqiri should be a great option off the bench but unlike Coutinho he is unlikely to be a core starting player.

To be fair, he does take a lot of long range shots.

I replied to someone on this before.

https://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=340364.msg16116739#msg16116739

Quote
Shots Outside the box per 90 in the Premier League in 2017/18:-
Coutinho 3,1
Pedro 2,1
De Bruyne 2,1
A.Sanchez 2,1
Pogba 1,9
Stanislas 1,9
Erikson 1,7
Xhaka 1,6
Shelvey 1,5
Ibe 1,4
Antonio 1,4
Chamberlain 1,3
Richie 1,3
Rashford 1,3
Shaqiri 1,3

Also tactically, you need a long range threat in your side. Which means signing someone who is competent from long range. This forces the opposition to close him down which creates movement in a low block. It's another reason why we struggle without Chamberlain or Coutinho in the side at times against those sides.

Plus it ignores the fact that Shaqiri is a direct set piece taker for his team, which is disingenuous. 0,4 of his shots are from set pieces which reduces his shots from outside the box to 0,9 per game from open play. Does that still sound like something he is doing too much. That he is terribly wasteful? Something he does less than once per game?

Then just looking at shots from outside the box as a standalone metric is disingenuous. Because if it is something you tactically want from your side, then you can't just blindly discourage it across the board. Therefore you need to find a way of valuing the shots a player is taking from there and weighing up whether the player doing so should be discouraged or not. A way to do this would perhaps be to check the shooting accuracy of those players.

Coutinho 31,48%
Pedro 35,71%
De Bruyne 41,49%
A.Sanchez 37,68%
Pogba 23,68%
Stanislas 44,44%
Erikson 40,21%
Xhaka 25,76%
Shelvey 21,43%
Ibe 31,48%
Antonio 44,12%
Chamberlain 39,47%
Richie 27,12%
Rashford 34,43%
Shaqiri 46,38%

So it seems out of the 15 non-forward players who take the most long shots in the Premier League, Shaqiri has the best shot on target ratio. But is he effective with his long range shooting? Let's look at the ratio of long shots to goals for the players.

Coutinho 9,8 Shots per Goal
Pedro 12 SpG
De Bruyne 14,4 SpG
A.Sanchez 40 SpG
Pogba 46 SpG
Stanislas 27 SpG
Erikson 31 SpG
Xhaka 58 SpG
Shelvey 37 SpG
Ibe 32 SpG
Antonio 0 goals in 21 shots
Chamberlain 22 SpG
Richie 42 SpG
Rashford 0 goals in 26 shots
Shaqiri 8,8 SpG

Okay, so he has the best ratio of shots from outside the box to goals from outside the box in the Premier League. He also gets most of his shots on target from that selection of players too. So anybody painting his shooting as either wasteful, ineffective or "too frequent" really needs to get their facts right.

All the above is based on whoscored.com rather than using data I have download to make sure it is verifiable to all

He is a bit of a Juggernaut, isn't he? Hopefully he can help bring the title back to the Mothership.

And FINALLY one of the fabled rumours signs. Arda Turan or Simao next?!

By any chance do you shots from outside the box as percentage of total shots? Quick maths says Shaqiri is 60% - which you can understand makes people think that's all he can do. That's pretty consistent for him too - his Bundesliga average was 57% over three seasons - although in Pep's first season he got it down to about 41% which suggests it can be coached out of him.

Not going to pretend that I don't have some reservations about his overall contribution because I have. But reading Jurgens comments certainly makes me feel a lot better, and then remembering how much I hated the Ox move last year, reminds me that I am not infallible.
