Liverpool are believed to have agreed a deal to sign Barcelona winger Luis Garcia, according to reports emanating from Spain.

Spanish radio claims Barcelona have agreed to the sale of the Spanish international after signing Samuel Eto'o from Real Mallorca.

Liverpool were initially thought to be keen on taking Garcia on loan for the whole of next season, but reports claim they have agreed a €9 million (£6 million) deal for the wide man.

Garcia's first team chances seem limited for the new season as Barca have been busy in the transfer market bringing in the likes of Deco and Ludovic Giuly at Camp Nou.

The 26-year-old did not train with Barcelona on Thursday and it is believed that the move could be announced as soon as Friday.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is a big fan of the midfielder and is keen to bolster his options having lost Vladimir Smicer to injury and Danny Murphy to Charlton.

Garcia, who is predominantly a left-sided midfielder, can play in a variety of positions and would add options to Benitez's team.

Benitez tried to sign Garcia when he was in charge of Valencia, but it appears he has finally got his man and he will become his second signing from Spain following the capture of Josemi from Malaga.

Left/Right/behind the strikers bit of a multi prurpose player.

A decent enough signing and one that will give us more options than we currently have.

what that means is anyones guess, but I'd imagine there's still a medical etc to do.

If he can play in all those positions then it sounds like a good buy. I still believe we need another attacking midfielder, but one more could also be enough.

Left-sided player, though he can play behind the main striker.

Fast, direct, skilful, scores goals, likes to take on defenders and go past them. Good ball skills, good dribbling skills, and gets into good positions to create danger and help teammates.

In front of goals he's sharp and takes his chances. Always gets his shots on target on all surfaces. Works hard for the team.

Biography

Luis came up through the FC Barcelona youth teams but has had a tough path back to the Club. After two seasons with the reserves, 1997-98 and 1998-99, he was transferred with a buy-back clause to Valladolid who loaned him on to Toledo, then in Second A. There followed another deal (2000-01) to Tenerife, where he made a vital contribution to their promotion campaign, playing 40 games and scoring 16 goals. Returning to Valladolid he played 27 games and scored 8 goals.

In the summer of 2002 he returned to FC Barcelona who sold him to Atlético de Madrid, but again with a buy-back option. He played 25 games, 22 of them in the starting line-up, totalling 1.523 minutes and 6 goals.

After his fine season with Atlético de Madrid, the Club decided to exercise the buy-back clause.

So there you go. Not sure what we'll do with him if we do buy him, but at least we know his age.

Apparently Garcia had a 9 million Euro's release clause in his contract (Spanish law that all players must have a release clause) so if Barca wanted to keep him they couldn't.

it's 1.47 to the pound, call it 6 million squid. Wright-Phillips would've cost a fair bit more
