Well remembered... there was indeed a little second-hand clobber shop there - just by the old YMCA ....they had an arle top hat in the window and a great collection of collarless (grandad) shirts!....not sure if it even had a name then?...we just called it the shirt shop  8)

Aunt twakeys was down in Matthew street, 69a was at 81a renshaw street until 1981 but I can't remember the name of this one next to atticus.
Anyone remember Pink Moon records off renshaw street, there were more little shops in there too.

Stumbled across a site yesterday that has a few interesting old pictures of the docks that I don't think I've seen before.

Might be of interest.

He keeps coming back into shot, like these characters in outside broadcasts today who on seeing a camera, start playing up behind the presenter.

He has a pocket watch though and appears to be not dressed as a dock labourer, I can't imagine that umbrella would be of much use, so I wonder if he's one of the film crew instead of just a rubbernecking passerby?

OHR train leaving at 7 seconds and one arriving around 30 just visible in the top right hand corner.

Love that Hanson's dairy one.

As a kid down Melwood back in the late 50's and into the early 60's, we used to get our milk delivered by Hanson's.

I could well be wrong, but didn't they have a depot Cantril Farm way?

I think the milkman we had was called Frank, and he was a big man, built like a butcher, or certainly seemed like a man mountain to me as a child.

He would toddle round the estate on foot all on his own on a Friday evening with a leather satchel over his shoulder collecting the money due.

I was led to believe that one evening, a couple of characters decided they'd attempt to relieve him of the money and the story went that he put them in hospital, which was entirely believable.

He then seemed to start coming round with another fellow, I assume for deterrence and backup if needed.

Was that queue going round the corner heading to a bakery during one of the infamous 1970s bread strikes when the plant bakeries were on strike and the only source of bread was small bakers?

I recall informal rationing i.e. one short weight loaf each. The Blitz spirit hey.

I dont really recall Hanson's but I did do a milk round as a 10 year old around Tuebrook around 1977.  The guy used to let me drive the float.  I can't remember his name but remember he also had a cafe called the Copper Kettle in Huyton. I remember running into a lamppost one morning carrying 4 bottles and smashed the lot..

It is, and the car behind is a Ford Consul (or possibly Zephyr, they shared the same body shell) Mk2, possibly a lowline, and the car in front is a Mk1 Escort.

The whole story of the world's cleverest chimpanzee is fantastic!

What a life. Helping to cage in the other chimps who didn't like him at Rhyl Zoo - no doubt Bitter chimps - and the constant escape routines.

I used to play up and down that street when I was a kid.
We had relatives who lived in the maisonettes on the right.

Capon, is it ok to pass on this photo to my family?  :wave
If your moral compass is Piers Moron then I ask you to think whether someone who oversaw illegal phone hacking and published fake pictures depicting War Crimes is an appropriate person to look up to. In fact, I'd suggest you're a bit of a c*nt.

Good to hear that Cap,love seeing & reading personal stories here.

Regarding that truck..was it a Mr Halliday (Harry) who delivered coal?
Seems very relevant & i'll add to it if it is the right person & truck.

Lil story for  ye.Mams family lived same street as Terence Davies( Distant Voices, Still Lives).Dont know if it was Fairy St or Kenny, but TD used to put on plays in basement and my mum n her older sis would be in em.There was a jokey rumour in our familly between my mum and her  sisters and brothers that his mam was knocking around witth my grandad years ago. When i saw a photo of TD I was like ''Fuck off.You messinn? its the same fucking guy'' i actually thought it was my Grandad ;D

Apparently in ''Distant Voices, Still Lives'' theres a scene were someone shouts goodnight to my  gramps

Crackin little story that Cap!
Regarding the Hallidays, they had a corner shop by us in Goodhall rd which we were never out of..the range of sweets was outstanding.
The times when you were sent for messages by your Mam for 10 cigs & a 1/4 chopped pork etc,me Mam would always leave enough 'keep the change' for a lucky bag for going..it was Mary Halliday & her sister who ran the shop and Harry had a big storage shed with his wagon & coal which he delivered everywhere.
Don't recall a daughter but he may well have had a brother in his own business..Halliday ain't really a common name.

:D

This Mr Halliday lived at 3 fairy St mate.Sounds like a different one.Could be related like ye say though :-\
