Pre-80s Movie Draft - Selection Thread (No discussion)
« on: February 7, 2023, 10:12:22 pm »
- Snake format draft.

- Every movie released before 1980 is eligible. We will use letterboxd.com to corroborate the year of the release.

- Start times are 09.00 am to 11.00pm UK time.

- 2 hours per pick for the first round. 1 hour per pick after the first round.

- Every drafter will have to pick 8 films and state in which of these categories it falls:

Cat 1. Action/War/Western
Cat 2. Thriller/Crime/Mystery
Cat 3. Drama/Romance
Cat 4. Comedy/Musicals
Cat 5. Sci-Fi/Horror
Cat 6. Family/Animation
Cat 7. Foreign Language (not English or Uruguayanese)
Cat 8. Wildcard (pick whatever you like)

- I know it's pretty obvious but, only one pick per category and all eight of them have to be completed.

- The genre chosen for the film, must be present on its letterbox.com or IMDB page to be valid.

Example: The Godfather: https://letterboxd.com/film/the-godfather/genres/

In this example, you can choose either drama or crime, but you can't put it on thriller as it's not one of the genres covered.

- Besides the different categories, the drafters will also have to fulfil the following quotas and regulations:

* 3 different decades must be represented.
* Only 1 movie per director.
* No repeated lead actors.

Apocalypse Now - 1 War 1979

Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell? The whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
(1964) - Cat 1. War

Satirical comedy at its best and most terrifyingly plausibly accurate. Plus, Peter Sellers in one of the finest acting performances I've ever seen. Need I say more.

The Godfather Part II (1974) - Crime/Thriller

Look, the first film is obviously great, but the second one expands its reach into the past to show not only how power corrupts but how violence begets violence, regardless of how honourable it may seem. The young Vito Corleone's rise to power and his need to respond to violence is a brilliant counterpoint to Michael's attempt to make peace, as are the ways each are isolated from the people around them. The performances are top notch and it's filmed wonderfully. And that climax is operatic. Anyone who thinks gangster films are inherently evil needs to watch this, stat.

The Jungle Book (1967)  -  Cat 6. Family/Animation

Bagheera: "Many strange legends are told of these jungles of India, but none so strange as the story of a small boy named Mowgli. It all began when the silence of the jungle was broken by an unfamiliar sound. It was a sound that had never been heard before in this part of the jungle. It was a Man-Cub! If I had known how deeply I was to be involved, I would have obeyed my first impulse and walked away."

I'm probably doing this wrong, but this looked the scarcest category for me. Not only is this arguably Disney's finest animation, it features what must be one of their best ever (certainly most fun) musical numbers from Louis Prima's King Louie. Always evokes warm memories of my grandad and his love of New Orleans jazz (he'd without doubt have been Huddersfield's biggest fan of Louis Armstrong)

IMO, the pinnacle of Sir Alfred Hitchcock's body of work...

Vertigo (1958)
Dir. Alfred Hitchcock

Cat 2. Thriller/Crime/Mystery

The auteur's finest study of obsession, voyeurism and desire. While Mulholland Drive is my favourite modern noir/thriller/psychosexual mystery, Vertigo is my old classic favourite.

Barry Lyndon (1975) - Cat. 3 Drama

Dir: Stanley Kubrick

The tragic (but engrossing) story of Barry Lyndon, is one of the finest - and most beautifully captured - character studies of all time. As epic in scope as it is in character development. We follow the protagonist's up and downs, starting as a young idealistic romantic, to disfranchised soldier, to a manipulative rich aristocrat. When people discuss this movie they usually praise the gorgeous picturesque cinematography and the impeccable score, and they are right. But the performances, and how masterfully Kubrick handles the main character's transformation and ultimate descent, are just as praiseworthy.

One of my top 10 films of all time and expect it to be for a long time.

A bold, striking vision of the future that is also a chilling and challenging study of evil/power of the government vs freedom of choice of the individual...

A Clockwork Orange (1971)
Dir. Stanley Kubrick

Cat 5. Sci-Fi/Horror

Stanley Kubrick is my all-time favourite director, so I needed one of his masterworks in my roster. A Clockwork Orange remains in my all-time top 10 films, and like his other films like 2001 and Barry Lyndon, deserve to be on the wall in an art gallery, for each generation to admire and discuss in depth.

Jaws (1975)  -  Cat 2. Thriller/Crime/Mystery

Quint: "At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol’ fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

I'm sure a fun discussion could be had on 'best monologues in mainstream cinema history', but no matter your preference nobody can deny Robert Shaw's recounting the genuine sinking of the USS Indianapolis belongs in the conversation.

It's essential viewing, from a true classic (in multiple genres) - and for my money it's the closest to perfect of Spielberg's films

North by Northwest (1959)

Cat 2. Thriller/Crime/Mystery
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock

There are three films that someone could call Hitchcock's best, and I wouldn't argue with it. "Vertigo" is certainly one of them, but this is the one for me. The master at his best, Cary Grant at his charming best, the perfect romantic foil in Eva Marie Saint. A classic masterpiece of suspense and action.

Simply, the greatest western ever. You want to know what Sergio Leone thought about everything he did before this? He wanted the protagonists of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly to be in the  opening scene above.

If you've never seen Once Upon a Time in the West, there's a link in the title, but if you have you know it's he ultimate riposte to anyone who complains about slow films. It's slow as hell but it looks and sounds incredible and it lays out a plot that is wonderful and that makes the most of its time to breathe. And that's before you get on to the majestic cinematography or Ennio Morricone's career peak score, which gives every main character their own theme.

If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.

The French Connection (1971) - Thriller/Crime

Known for the Street-level grit of its handheld cinematography, location shooting, action and even the actors that didn’t look like Hollywood stars. This style wasn’t accidental.

Director, William Friedkin fully intended to give The French Connection an “induced documentary style.”

Then throw in one of the greatest car chases in cinematic history, 5 Academy awards, including; Best Picture, Best Actor (Hackman), Best Director.

Ok granted, certain attitudes and language used within the movie is of its time, but I firmly believe its a true depiction of how the NYPD was back then (And probably still is).

It's an all round phenomenal movie IMO.
