Poor Scouser Tommy
« on: October 8, 2012, 04:24:35 pm »
Tune : 1st part - "Red River Valley" 2nd part - "The Sash"

Let me tell you the story of a poor boy
Who was sent far away from his home
To fight for his king and his country
And also the old folks back home

So they put him in a Highland division
Sent him off to a far foreign land
Where the flies swarm around in their thousands
And there's nothing to see but the sands

In a battle that started next morning
Under a Libyan sun
I remember that poor Scouser Tommy
Who was shot by an old Nazi gun

As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
With the blood gushing out of his head (of his head)
As he lay on the battle field dying (dying dying)
These were the last words he said...

Oh...I am a Liverpudlian
I come from the Spion Kop
I like to sing, I like to shout
I get thrown out quite a lot (every week)

We support the team that's dressed in red
A team that we all know
A team that we call Liverpool
And to glory we will go

We've won the League, we've won the Cup
We've been to Europe too
We played the Toffees for a laugh
And we left them feeling blue - Five Nil !

One two
One two three
One two three four
Five nil !

Rush scored one
Rush scored two
Rush scored three
And Rush scored four!

To clarify, it isn't my work - it is the original song page whose origin is lost in antiquity. I merely converted it into a forum friendly format to retire the old bespoke page. By the time I got into the S's I was barely reading them.

Hate the way the songs dies away after "OH I AM A LIVERPUDLIAN AND I COME FROM........" Seems to be an obsession with singing faster and faster the tailing away to nothing.   Needs slowing down and sung with greater emphasis.

The first time I recall mass singing of this was the League Cup Final v. Forest at Wembley. Song sheets were handed out on the way into the ground. I may still have mine somewhere in the loft. The point is that I memorised the words from this song sheet and it was "Arabian" and "go there.."

Wasn't it derived from the Rangers song "Battle of Barcelona" about the trouble at the '72 Cup Winners' Cup Final?

In the '70s there was a close affinity between the supporters of Rangers and Liverpool. IMO this was blown apart by their link with the Chelsea Casuals at Anfield in '85 (was it?) but that's another subject entirely. Anyway, lads, myself included, would quite regularly go to Ibrox and so knew a lot of the songs of the time.

In this case, the tune to "Battle of Barcelona" is exactly the same as "Scouser Tommy". Clearly, however, the words are about totally different subjects.

Remember chelsea rangers love in at anfield. Mid day kickoff. I never saw old away end split like that before. Even had a few cockneys in kop that day mooching. Strange day and it was 85/86 season. Nice to win league there later though.

Because I knew a few lads who went to Rangers games in the early and mid 70's - It was one of them who I credit with starting PST in 76 - you might know him.

Was Battle of Barcelona just the Red River Valley part or all of it? Do you recall any words to it?

I noticed that Kilmarnock (plus some lower league English team) sang 'as they lay on the battlefield (terraces?) dying...' verse then combined it with We are the Champions based on some league or Cup win they done in 72. So it seems that combining songs, including Red River Valley was commonplace early 70s.

An almighty confusion here surely. The song has a more elevated pedigree than a Glasgow Rangers scrap in Barcelona.  The initial tune derives from Red River Valley and the only battle in Spain it has connections with is the Battle of Jarama where the Republican forces, including the Abe Lincoln Brigade, fought to keep Franco out of Madrid.

'Battle of Jarama' is that song

These words and i'm sure other variations have been sung in Scotland many years before we were singing our version.

Gather round and I'll tell you a story
Of a boy who was taken from home
Not to fight for his King or his country
But to fight for the old folks at home

Well they put him in the Highland Division
and they sent him to a far distant land
It was there that this brave Scottish Laddie was killed by and old eytie gun

as he lay on the battlefield dieing
with the blood poring down on his head
as he lay on the battlefield dieing
These were the last words he said

won't you bury me out in the desert
won't you bury me out in this sun
won't you bury me out in the desert
my duty to Scotland is done

Now as you sit by your firesides in Scotland
and this war it is over and done
just remember that brave Scottish soldier
who was killed by that old eytie gun.

All interesting information. That Spanish civil war song is certainly the same tune. I suspect that the scots used that but that we pinched it from Rangers. I can only recall the name of one other lad who I used to go with but I'm sure he's not the same person you refer to.

I can only recall the first line being "let me tell you of the battle of Barcelona."  Not much use but I am almost certain it was the same tune. Whilst part of me wishes there was a specific link between us and the Spanish civil war, I very much doubt it :-)

It's interesting to see the imitations that other teams have done. This looks a good one from West Ham. I can't tell by reading it if the second part is the same tune?

Let me tell you a story of a poor boy,
Sent away, far away from his home,
To fight for his King and his Country,
And also the old folks back home.
And he came from a good East End family,
Sent away to far, foreign land,
Where the flies swarm around in their 1000's
And there’s nothing to see but the sand.
And the battle it started next morning,
Under a dark Belgian sun.
We remember an East London tommy,
Shot to death by an old German gun.
And as he lay on the battlefield dying,
With the blood rushing out of his head,
As he lay on the battlefield dying,
These were the words that he said.
“Oh West Ham United are my true love
I have followed them home and away
To the Kippax, the Shed and the Paxton,
Until now, it is my dying day.
May the Claret and Blue be triumphant
Win the league, win the cup, be the best
Beat the Arsenal, the Chelsea and the Tottenham
The Scouser’s, the Manc’s and the rest.
May the North Bank and South Bank keep singing,
And the Chicken Run sway side to side,
And the West Side keep Bow Bells a ringing
And with those words, the brave Cockney died.

Definitely the same tune different words but ive never heard any english club sing this at all so I suspect it's a rip off of ours that may get sung on a coach or by a few but not the general masse as a chant

I think it stays with the tune 'Red River Valley' and doesn't change to The Sash for the second part. Split it into verses:

Let me tell you a story of a poor boy,
Sent away, far away from his home,
To fight for his King and his Country,
And also the old folks back home.

And he came from a good East End family,
Sent away to far, foreign land,

To the Kippax, the Shed and the Paxton,
Until now, it is my dying day.

May the Claret and Blue be triumphant
Win the league, win the cup, be the best
Beat the Arsenal, the Chelsea and the Tottenham
The Scouser’s, the Manc’s and the rest.

May the North Bank and South Bank keep singing,
And the Chicken Run sway side to side,
And the West Side keep Bow Bells a ringing
And with those words, the brave Cockney died.

It happens to all songs over time doesn't it? YNWA was dead on its feet in the 90s until the PA system smashed through the speedsters and forced people to slow down. I'm not sure why songs do continually speed up like this, but there seems to be no stopping it.

That's not quite true of course. Spurs fans clearly decided to do something about the pace with which they sang 'When the Spurs Go Marching in'. And fair play to them. The result is that this is by far and away the loudest football song to be heard in an English stadium these days. They are able to sing it from their stomach I suppose, not their throats. That's why it's much louder.
