It's a small pocket really. For a part of London that is so well connected via transport, is close to the exit (M4), is next to the river, has lots of local schools, shops, hospitals etc, is only 25 minutes from the west end and is very close to the more affluent parts of town - it's a bit of a shithole.

Its a pretty crap place to live in terms of space, but the women in the Hammersmith/Barons Court area that get on the tube are cracking.
If he retires I'll eat my fucking cock.

Glad I spotted this thread...

Iv just accepted a job in Thamesmead and start in September. Looking to rent in/around Greenwich or Blackheath area.

Has anyone any knowledge of nice places in and around those areas or places that I should stay away from due to them being a bit shit?

greenwich and blackheath are nice but expensive. I would say look at bexleyheath/crayford, not far from thamesmead and not a bad place at all.

Avoid thamesmead itself, as well as woolwich, lewisham etc like the plague.

Try Elephant and Castle. I have family and friends in the area... They tell me no problems here.

Sweden Red has finally admitted that he is Jim Davidson.

Antipodeans most likely!

BazC - EC1 is so central that you could realistically live anywhere and be able to commute in ok. It's probably easiest to live slightly north or east for a short commute but I don't know those areas too well.

I had to move over to London on short notice this time last year.  I stayed in a place called Dog Kennel Hill near East Dulwich.
It was an apartment block, next door to a Sainsburys and 2 mins walk from two train stops.  Gift to commute into City centre from and from what I seen a really nice area.

This is not the apartment I stayed in, but its in the same block clicky here

I have no real idea about whereabouts in London it is in relation to what people need on here, but if it suits I would defo recommend it.

Good luck  :wave

Pay attention to this statement...really...thamesmead, abbeywood, erith, plumstead, charlton, lewisham, catford are to be avoided...oh and woolwich. I lived there for 5 years its a place that tramps are ashamed to live. FYI thamesmead is the place from clockwork orange.

Greenwich is very nice. As is blackheath where they buried the people from the plague.

Yea thanks for that. There seems to be quite a lot going in Greenwich in my price bracket that I will look into

A mate of mine lives in Lewisham and said the outskirts are nice but its the centre that you need to stay away from.

Getting quite excited about the big move now. Gonna spend a weekend down there looking at flats soon I think.

I lived in London for about 5 months years back....1995/96. In Stoke Newington. I was poor and liviing hand to mouth and it is one period of my life I try to eradicate from my memory. You have to be tough as nails to make it there. I for one leave it as a place to visit as a tourist. But living there? No thank you.

I went to Secondary school in New Cross...It taught me how to survive. And I mean survive. Going down the Old Kent Road's pubs between New Cross and Elephant and Castle was an experience I can tell ya. I once saw a bloke punch his girlfriend twice hard in the face. Some bloke asked how she was, and immediately the boyfriend and girlfriend were best of chums again and decided to lay into the poor fella asking haow she was! Honest... I have travelled pretty extensively in my times, but never have I seen a tougher place than Inner South East London.

I used to live in Perivale, it was lovely because it was really close to Ealing but eminently cheaper.  Loads of Polish people living in Perivale which is nice because they are, on the whole, really warm and friendly people.
Also, there was a 'Goals' soccer centre down the road, always used to wander in there and just kick about on my own sometimes.  A team would invariably be short and ask me if I was able to play for them.

Some of the best nights out I had in London were in Notting Hill Arts Club, and their Death Disco nights.  It's a hidden gem.

I'm moving to London shortly.  Started looking for a job, signed to a couple of agencies last week and have some interviews in the pipeline.

Don't really know anyone down there so I'm looking at getting into a houseshare with people in the same situation,to make the move easier. I'm started looking on Gumtree etc. Looking at a budget of around £500 in the Clapham area, prefereably with 3 fit Swedish birds to pass my spare time.

Lived and worked there from 1997 - 2005, which meant in terms of age I went from mid 20's to early 30's.

And my enjoyment of it was directly proportionate.

Started off as a big adventure, shared a house with a few others in the suburbs and partied and spent a fortune.

Then started all of a sudden to get a bit peeved with the tube commute in rush hour, and the constant boozing at various expensive 'wine bars' at weekends wore off as well.

Was earning a decent salary but was also spending it.

Then met the missus and both of us reckoned that while London was ok for the single stuff, we both wanted to head north to buy a house and settle etc.

I worked in camden but lived in Harrow.  It's about a half hour tube journey on the met line, but the rental costs are much lower than if you lived centrally.

I was getting put up in a hotel (Montague) next to the British Museum.

To be fair, this was when I was 18, contracting for a bank in the City, back then it was a lot worse than it is today - very unfriendly and unwelcoming. To be fair to it, when I go down there nowdays, it seems a bit more chilled out and relaxed - though clearly not anything like the North.

About commuting, I also worked in Cambridge for about a year - and that's where people commute from to London and boy oh boy was that a violent pit - was a bit gutted - thought it would be lovely and friendly - but near the airport where I stayed - it was unebelievable.

living in ealing was like living in another big city, leeds, liverpool, anything similar

it was a bit cheaper then in the center and plenty of parks and such

Ah right, our Sunday team were playing on Suffolk Road I think.
I've lived in Chiswick all my life and I still fucking love it. Those two pubs are ok but you've also got the Bulls Head and City Barge on the river.

Not been to those two, I just tend to hang around the high street being on the route back from work.
It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play
