Curb Your Enthusiasm
« on: August 27, 2004, 03:12:20 pm »
Multi-multi award-winning comedy by Seinfeld creator, Larry David - heard nothing but good things about it, but yet to see it myself. Was getting sick of being asked "have you seen...?"

Anyway, now E4 will be showing it, although not sure if it's from series one (it's up to series four in the States).

On next Thursday at 11.10 (so straight after Six Feet Under - the televisual equivalent of sleeping with one twin as the other undresses and gets ready for you!*  ;D )

* Unfortunately, this is an analogy based purely on my imaginiation!  ;D

I've only seen a couple of episodes but they were absolutely brilliant.  Its the kind of show that you have to watch through half closed eyes, cringing and laughing at the same time.

Larry David based the character of George Costanza on himself and its amusing seeing him now directly satirise his own life.

Recommended.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

Must be a "RAWK staff" thing, this one!

A friend of mine watches Curb... but never saw Seinfeld. I said it sounded very much like George Costanza was one-and-the-same as Larry David in terms of character, etc.

'Curb..' is the best thing to come out of America since The Simpsons IM(H)O. Watched the last series shown on BBC3 earlier this year, and nearly wet the sofa on many occasions. Some real 'classic comedy'  moments there.

Great stuff  :D .
Oh the heavy water how it enfolds. The salt, the spray, the gorgeous undertow.

Have you seen the one with the porn mags?

Also the dinner party where he gets lost on the way?

Not seen the porn mag one ???. Dinner parties are a recurring theme in curb, and are ripe for the piss-take I reckon. (I'm amazed not many writers have exploited this after 'Abigail's Party'...). The one where they're all playing poker after dinner had me biting my fist with embarassed laughter.

I'm made up Sly haven't snaffled it upi and t's back on 'proper' TV. :wellin.

Bump.

It's genius.
I've never seen Seinfeld (an unplug-the-phone-and-muzzle-the-cat-DVD-retrospective is probably long overdue), but having seen S1 and parts of S3 (S2 on its way in the post soon), I can't wait for more. I believe S5 has been agreed in the US ( http://www.hbo.com/larrydavid/ ). Larry can't seem to avoid annoying/scandalising/outraging/offending people without trying- but when he is on a mission to make a point (a point he always sees as fair and just, of course), you can't help but watch, horrified. If David Brent makes you squirm, get a load of Larry: in S1 he arranges to have an obituary printed for his longsuffering agent's 'Beloved Aunt'.............only for the paper to misprint 'Aunt' with a 'C'.
Do yourself a favour- watch it.

Thanks Jonathan for bumping that, following our discussions.

I've now seen all of series 3, and most of 1 and 2 on DVD. It is without doubt a work of utter genius. Not always funny throughout, but always so very clever, and still lots of laughs. Some episodes are hysterical.

Ricky Gervais loves it. He says in this month's Uncut that if people think the Office is cringe-making, CYE is much worse!

The party at the porn star's house is my favourite, but it's just Larry David's way of dealing with people, and how outraged he is by all the injustices of life, and the silly things people do and say. He speaks his mind, and gets into so much trouble.

You can definitely see the similarity with The Office but C.Y.E is more up my street humour-wise. A little bit courser in content sometimes and the bloke is much easier to think of in a ridiculing sense than Brent too.

Mon plaisir, mon ami.......
The fact that it's unscripted (the cast discuss a storyline, and then they're left to improvise their way through it) makes it even better in my book.
And is it just me, or is Larry's wife hot in a not-tto-obvious way?

Cheryl Hines (Cheryl David in the show) is very nice for an 'older' woman. The way she handles Larry is priceless.

The improv side of it is brilliant. I love Jeff's wife, who calls her husband a 'fat fuck' the whole time, and calls Larry much worse!

Similarly, I've never seen Seinfeld, or wanted to for that matter, so can't make comparisons, but it's true that CYE is just brilliant. It was on BBC Three earlier in the year. It's cringeworthy comedy at its best and you just find yourself shouting at the TV "yes! I know what you MEEEEAAANN!"

Well, er, I did anyway....  ;D

Don't miss it.

Seinfeld is a little dated now in some regards, but still top quality. Very well observed humour.

CYE takes it to a whole new level. You can see the influence of Larry David in both shows, though.

Can't believe I missed last week's CYE - just read on the TV Tome site (on the episode guide bit) that it was the last of the series, and series 4 does not start tonight - god-knows when that will be shown over here.

Radio 4 reviewed the Seinfeld DVD box-set recently, and spoke at length about Larry David. Apparently he's been doing the American stand-up circuit since the late sixties, and is dubbed "the King of the caper". Oh, and ladies, he's also worth $600m..

I feckin' love, 'Curb', but I loathe Seinfeld wiith a passion - it's truly abysmal tosh.  Is this right ? ???

It's always held up as the perfect sitcom- but from brief glimpses it did nothing for me. Almost afraid to watch it, lest it taint my CYE obsession  ;)

Thing with Seinfeld is it takes a few watches to get into. The early Seinfelds are very heavily influenced by Larry David, and you can see lots of similiaries between the two shows.

Seinfeld was brilliant and so is Curb Your Enthusiasm. A favourite of mine was the episode when Larry was invited to a dinner with a "survivor" and brought a survivor of his own with him. Larrys survivor was the concentration camp kind but the other had won the Survivor reality tv show. At the end of the evening the two of them were arguing about which ordeal had been tougher, being in a nazi camp or being on a tv show on an island.

Genius! Never seen that one.

I'm about to watch the one with the Incest Survivors Group, where he goes along with a friend and finds out no friends are allowed, so he has to make up a story about being an incest victim on the spot.

My favourite Larry David story is that when the actor who plays George in Seinfeld read a script once he complained that 'no human being would act like this.' David had to inform the guy that he had in fact acted exactly like George was supposed to in the script.

And the ridiculous scenario? George quits work in a rage, insults his boss etc then calms down over the weekend, regrets what he did and decides to go in on Monday as if nothing happened - pretending it was all a big joke.

Larry David actually did this. The mans a fucking legend!!!
'Liverpool was made for me and I was made for Liverpool.'

Yeah, he talks about that incident on the Curb Series One DVD interview.

I love the Curb where the camp (but apparently straigh) guy at the dinner party is being a bit soppy, and Larry shouts out "You c*nt!"

Afterwards, once he's been kicked out, he says to his wife on the drive home "maybe I should have called him a pussy instead?" - and there's a whole discussion about the word 'c*nt'.

Also, the whole riffs about the 'cut off point' about when to call someone (not after 10pm when they have kids, or not after 10.30 if they are a platonic friend of the opposite sex) is the work of a genius.

It is absolutely immense! I saw the 3rd series first on E4 and subsequnetly bought Series 1 & 2. Just a few highlights:

- The episode where he says proudly to Jeff that he stays away from anything strange in the bedroom so that if his wife divorces him she wont be able to sell any kinky stories.  But almost straight away it all backfires on him and his wife thinks he's into big asses,  and then he gets the speed camera photo through with Jeff's mums ass right next to his head!

- The trick or treat episode where he gets the orchestra to play Wagner outside that angry Jew's house!

-  The doll episode is the best for me, such a great set of circumstance which ends with larry hugging a little girl (whilst having a water bottle in his pants) and she runs of screaming "mummy mummy that bald mans got something hard in his pants!"

Fookin brilliant!
