It was widely reported that it was going back to its format of being recorded in front of a live audience.

Like I said I didn't know mate. Was decent start anyway to show.

Fair enough. Obviously not a mad Dwarfer ;)

It was really good, glad that they seem to have got the magic back.

Well just got round to watching it and i gotta say i enjoyed it, was quite surprsied to find Kryten had aged worst out of the 4, thought his outfit would have made it easier to look like the original. And glad they fixed Rimmers hair, the receding hairline in BtE made him look about 5 years older than he does now.

Also was it just me or did anyone notice a few Americanisms in there? (lame, swirley, wedgie) I don't remember many being in the earlier series' but i could be wrong, but i assume it's to do with it's growing popularity over in the States.

On the whole, great start and hoping they can keep it up.

Every series since 6 has provoked a negative reaction.  Back to Earth sucked the fun and laughter out of the show; Series X returned it.

Here is the thing about X. For1-6 I watched them repeatedly. I watched 7 a couple of times. 8 and 9 once each. Although the new one didn;t totally win me over, I am relaly looking forward to watching the episode again.

I'll take that.

There was a time I would have bemoaned the absence of Holly. But then I saw Norman Lovett in standup in Edinburgh last year and he was, to paraphrase the Gallagher brothers, SHEEEEIIIITE.

So meh.

That episode was excellent - want to watch it back now that I know about the live audience and the munchkin song on go-slow ;D

i was waiting to be underwhelmed, but it was actually pretty damn good.  the moose bit was classic red dwarf in that it was obvious what was going to happen but that made the perfect execution all the more enjoyable.

the script could do with being a bit tidier, the continuity was appalling, some of the gags were a little ropey, and it was a bit too 2012 for me, but i'll happily let them off all that.  i was also pleased to see it was a full half hour long.

Just watched it, having missed it in the week (grr)

Well that's about as good as it's been for quite some time now for me, back to the story line, jokes and good writing. I hope the remainder of the series will continue in that fashion, still - for me they're missing Holly (Norman Lovett) his dry wit was added another dimension to the group. Queeg, possibly my favourite episode;

Holly: Our deepest fear is going space crazy through loneliness. The only thing that helps me keep my slender grip on reality is the friendship I have with my collection of singing potatoes.

Rimmer: Was there any damage?
Holly: I don't know. The damage report machine has been damaged.

Lister: Well, how come Holly knows all the answers to science and space and all that when we ask him?
Queeg: He consults a book.
Holly: What a slimeball!
Queeg: He gets all his answers on astronomy, phenomenology and physics from a single reference book.
Rimmer: What's the book?
Queeg: The Junior Encyclopedia of Space. It's the only one he can find which has pictures.

Holly: We are talking jape of the decade. We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool. That's right. I am Queeg.
Lister, The Cat, Rimmer: What?
Holly: Queeg never existed. It was me all along.
Lister, The Cat, Rimmer: *What?*
Holly: Wheeze of the week, mate.
The Cat: It was a joke?
Holly: Going round in circles for 14 months. Getting my information from the Junior Color Encyclopedia of Space. The respect you have for me is awesome, innit?
Lister: So you mean you staged the whole thing?
Holly: [in Queeg's voice] That's right, suckers.
[in his voice]
Holly: And the moral of the story is, "Appreciate what you've got", because basically I'm fantastic.

Lister: Hang on. You can't do this. Holly's got an I.Q. of 6,000.
Holly: Yeah. Right on.
Queeg: Is that what he told you?
Lister: Well what is it, then?
Queeg: It has a six in it, but it's not 6,000.
The Cat: What is it?
Queeg: Six.
Holly: Six? Do me a lemon. That's a poor I.Q. for a glass of water.

Holly: What's happening, dudes?
Lister: Bog all.
Holly: Wait a minute. I've forgotten what I was gonna say.
Rimmer: Well, it can't have been that important then, can it?
[the ship is hit by a meteor, forcing the crew onto the floor]
Holly: Yeah. That's it."Look out, a meteor is about to hit the ship". I knew it'd come back to me.
The Cat: Thanks for the warning.

Rimmer: You are a total, total... a word is yet to be invented to describe how totally whatever-it-is you are, but you are one. And a total, total one at that.
Holly: All right, keep your hair on.
Rimmer: I'm lucky if I can keep my legs on with you in charge.

[Holly challenges Queeg to a match to fight for the control of Red Dwarf]
Holly: Name me a game.
Queeg: Chess.
Holly: It can be anything. Any game at all.
Queeg: Chess.
Holly: Draughts, poker, any game at all.
Queeg: Chess.
Holly: Subbuteo, Snakes and Ladders, you name it.
Queeg: Chess.
Holly: Monopoly, maybe? I'll let you go first.
Queeg: *Chess*.
Holly: So you like a bit of chess then, do you?

I watched this straight after the game thursday, expecting another disappointment. It was OK. Watched it again just now on the Dave website and it was definitely worth a second view, this time without the effects of four hours of ethanol consumption to contend with. I missed the Cat/map business first time around for a start (Navigation Officer, ha!). Some classic Dwarf moments in there, as people have said the moose thing was funny but my favourite bit was the comms button/chair joke. Very promising. I have two worries though, the first being that after such a long absence (bar Back To Earth, which was basically crap) and with the expectation, Naylor was always going to put one of the stronger episodes as the opener. I hope it doesn't go downhill from here. Secondly, I hope there's room for the SciFi/time-travelling comedy plots like Future Echoes or Back To Reality, that's MY Red Dwarf. *Fingers crossed*.

Just watched it I was very impressed. A proper return to form and consistent laughs all the way through.

I was surprised how quickly everyone slotted back into their characters. Chris Barrie was particularly good I thought, how isn't he in more things?

A couple of the jokes fell a bit flat, call centre gags are now almost as tedious as actually calling one, but the majority worked and overall it was great.
