England were loving Trippier in summer due to him crossing into "good areas", but what use is that when a player doesn't have a chance of getting on to it. At the highest level, putting it into a good area is useless, you need to be sure someones going to have a chance of getting it.

How do you decide which part of success is that of the crosser and that, if any, of the target?

Seems difficult to establish/determine...

As long as the cross is into an area more or less in the middle of the goal then it's up to the forwards to anticipate it and get in position. In that sense, the crosser (TAA) has done all he can and the rest is down to Mane, Firmino, Salah etc to get on the end of it.

If you as a forward are getting there but the cross is sailing over you and out for a throw in, or going out for a goal kick then there's nothing you can do. But trusting someone with excellent crossing ability to pick you out more often than not, it's a great weapon to have.

Thing is the defences are pretty much around the 6 yard box when Trent was crossing it. That, whilst being up against tall defenders.

So, what are we asking him to do? Its a low percentage way of creating a chance.

I mean he could just whack them in and have them headered away.

Its an option certainly, but our chances of scoring from these are improved if the cross is into the right area. Mane is the obvious beneficiary although Firmino could also benefit. These two seem to find the space avaiable. I favour getting to the by-line and cutting back across the face of the goal like our first goal

Thought he looked wrecked today. Hopefully Gomez will be ready to play a few games at fullback as well as centre back after the break as I don't think Trent is ready yet, physically or mentally, to play two big games a week in the business end of a double-chasing season. Too much to ask of him, especially when he's getting targeted most games.

And how is that working out for them ?  ::)

There's a reason we have scored the most goals from set-pieces in the league and TAA is taking most of our corners and free kicks.

As I've said, it's a great weapon to have, knowing that more often than not he's gonna put the ball into the danger area in the box. The argument that it's a low percentage chance doesn't stack up - the proof is there. Is it 18 goals from set pieces for us? (yes I know it includes pens).

It's on those days when his crossing ability both from set pieces and from open play is not quite on it, hitting the first man etc, that we are maybe not making the most of a clear strength of our team.

It's a bit like the Bobby Firmino flick and back heel situation.

"Trent should cut out all crosses except the ones that lead to goals."

Is there anything more substantive to posters' complaints than that?

Seems difficult to establish/determine...

Well Trippier was just hitting balls across the goal, or at the back post. While they are into "good areas", if nobody is anywhere near them or attacking that area, it's pointless. A cross is no good unless there is a target tohit with them

Trent does this really well. He only really crosses it when he sees someone he can pick out, not all come off, but football would be boring if everyone was that good right?
We already have shit in the country, and the game of Liverpool fills life with joy. Thanks

That's not my point. I'm saying that it's unfair to expect a 20 yr old to be at 100% for two games a week, especially as he has to be on it concentration-wise from minute 1 to 90 as the opposition usually look to get at the right side of the defence. Its testament to him that they don't usually get much joy but it will be good to be able to rotate him and Gomez to give him a rest in some of the upcoming games.

Trent has a back ''injury''

Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool defender withdraws from England squad

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has withdrawn from the England squad for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro because of a back injury.

No player has been called up to replace the 20-year-old, leaving manager Gareth Southgate with a 22-man squad.

England said Alexander-Arnold arrived with a back injury and "despite progress" it was unlikely he would be able to play in either fixture.

He has now returned to Liverpool.

England host the Czechs at Wembley Stadium on Friday to start their qualification campaign before facing Montenegro in Podgorica on Monday.

Not good. Back injuries are complicated, it all depends on the type. Hope it's minor and no operation is needed.

Started one move before that with a square pass from Firmino, who was closed in on by three players, to Hendo. That opened a bit of space for Hendo... and the rest is history.
