Former defender Stephen Darby retires at 29 after being diagnosed with motor neurons disease.

Such a shame. I remember one year thinking he could make it here. Was not to be.

Thoughts go to him and his family as they start this new battle.

Terrible - life limiting disease. Harrowing for him.

I've got a good friend who had a season ticket with his dad at Bradford City and I've joined him a few times over the years. Darby was a class above for them.

Sad to hear learn about this.

Seemed like one of the real leaders in our youth ranks during Rafa's early years, and he's clearly gone on to enjoy a decent career since.

All the best to Stephen and his family & friends for the challenges ahead.

God I can still remember him as part of Heighways final youth crop with Hammil, Anderson, Threlfall and Miki Roque (RIP). Such horrible news for the lad at such a young age. All I can hope is that he gets the best possible treatment and can slow the illness for as long as possible. It's one of the most cruel of illnesses. I mean seeing what it's done to Fernando Ricksen is just so heartbreaking. Honestly my thoughts are with the lad and his family.

Just so sad what's happened to so many of the young kids coming through in Rafa's time.

Idrizaj's cardiac arrest
Highdale's car accident
Roque's cancer

... and now this. Does Motor Neurone Disease in Britain automatically refer to ALS? On Wikipedia there were a few forms of said disease listed that were less lethal but those were less common. That aside, those forms were more common among younger victims. I just try and cling to the hope it's not ALS here  :-[

Dreadful news this, awful for someone of his age to be diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.  A work colleague of the missus and it is a truly awful thing to watch someone you know waste away like that.

It isn't necessarily a life ending condition as Stephen Hawking showed but even then it is totally debilitating
However if something serious happens to them I will eat my own cock.

Very, very few people live as long as Hawking did, 75% will pass away within 5 years of their diagnosis and only 10% will live longer than 10 years. The thought with specialists was that Hawking had a juvenile form of MND which progresses very slowly but these cases are extremely rare.

This is devastating news for him and his family. He only got married in the summer, his wife is the England womens captain. I can't even imagine to know how they're feeling right now.

Quote
Former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has sent a heartwarming message to Stephen Darby after the ex-Reds defender was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

Darby, who turns 30 next month, has been diagnosed with MND and has been forced to hang up his boots as he begins his battle against a rare illness which affects the nervous system.

Right-back Darby made six senior appearances for the Reds between 2008 and 2011 before he moved to Bradford City in 2012.

The 29-year-old made over 200 appearances for Bradford before making a switch to Bolton in the summer of 2017 and he was part of the Bantams side that went all the way to the League Cup final in 2013 as they were beaten by Swansea at Wembley.

It was Benitez who handed Darby his senior debut in a Champions League tie away to PSV Eindhoven in 2008 before giving him his maiden start the following year against Fiorentina.

Benitez's official Twitter account sent out a message on Wednesday morning saying Darby has the "total support" of his former manager.

Rafa Benitez Web

@rafabenitezweb
I was proud to give Stephen Darby his Liverpool debut and now I am deeply saddened to learn of his retirement. Stephen is a special person and he has my total support. He will never walk alone.

9:48 AM - Sep 19, 2018

"I was proud to give Stephen Darby his Liverpool debut and now I am deeply saddened to learn of his retirement," tweeted Benitez's official account @rafabenitezweb.

"Stephen is a special person and he has my total support. He will never walk alone."

The 2005 Champions League-winning manager joins a host of Reds legends who tweeted their support for the full-back.

Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and David Fairclough all passed on their messages of good-will on social media on Tuesday.

What is Motor Neurone Disease?
What is Motor Neurone Disease?

1) MND is an umbrella term to describe a group of related diseases which affect the motor nerves in the brain

2) It is a progressive and ultimately terminal disease that results in degeneration of the nerves, in the brain and spinal cord.

3) It's caused by a problem with cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurones. These cells gradually stop working over time. It's not known why this happens.

4) These affected nerves become damaged, preventing the messages from the nerve reaching the muscles causing weakness and muscle wasting.

5) Current research indicates that a combination of factors, both genetic and environmental, appears to be the main cause for MND.

6) In up to 10% of those with MND, it is caused by a mistake in the genes which is then passed down through families.
