Who is it for? What type of use are they going to make of it?

these mini's will fit the bill for general use.

Quick one guys

Off on holiday on Monday and just remembered my digital camera is broken beyond repair.

Does anyone have any first hand experience and recommendations for a cheap, compact digital camera that takes reasonably nice photos.

Id ideally like a camera that takes good night shots as those are the ones that are always disappointing from previous holidays.

Cheers :wave

I have a D3300 and I think I speak for everyone that own one, when I say that it is probably the best camera for a starter.

I definitely recommend it. If you can catch hold of the D3400, which is basically its next generation, I say, go for it.

Thought I'd bump this one and try and find some camera buffs on RAWK.

Treated myself yesterday to a Nikon D5300 digital camera and a Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3Di II PZD lens.

No idea what the fuck to do with either, really!!!!!!! I just enjoy taking decent pix ;D

One thing, I can't get the Nikon 2NX software to download to the Mac, so I have no fucking clue how to get the pix off the camera into the computer apart from using the SD card.

Any advice on any of the above always welcome.

Honestly, the best way is to use the SD card. Plugging a camera into your computer offers little advantages and increases the risk of your camera going crashing to the floor if you forget it's plugged in.

I think the Nikon software is pretty shit. If you want to make some quick changes to pics the apple photos software will suffice. If you want to get more into editing, start shooting RAW and get your hands on a copy of Adobe's Lightroom.

With the camera, if you're a novice, locate the AUTO function. Then, vow never ever to use it.  Get yourself shooting manually or in Aperture mode. It'll take a bit of work but in the long run it will make you a much better photographer. And try to use the camera at least once a week. Practice is the only way to become good.

Sound advice that. Already fucked off the autozoom on the lens - manual all the way, baby.  8)

The AUTO function on the camera irritated me from the off - I just don't know what I'm doing with the other functions, or how to change between ISOs or Fs or other letters of the alphabetty.......

Not a huge fan of altering pix after the event - when I was a teenager, I used to shoot a lot of B&W or sepia stuff - fuck all you can do once you hand the negative into the developers and I've retained that ideal. I used to piss about with pix a lot using the iPhoto freeware and, as much fun as that can be, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing a great picture in its original glory, I feel.

Anyway - any and all advice is appreciated, especially when you explain to me what "shoot in aperture mode" means ;D

I do get what you mean, but I still shoot film if I want to go the non-edit route. To get something approaching the quality of film with digital you really have to shoot RAW and edit your pics. Otherwise, you just don't get the dynamic range or colours that you see in a film still. I'm also not a fan of how most digital cameras process their jpegs. We have a Fuji XT2 for doing personal stuff and it's the only camera that I've seen that has anything approaching decent JPEG processing.

If you want good b&w (or colour) JPEG processing get yourself a copy of Alien Skin Exposure. It's probably one of the easiest ways to get a decent representation of old film stocks with very little work.

I wrote this article a few years ago that shows the power of modern digital sensors with a bit of post: https://petapixel.com/2014/11/24/creative-underexposure-nikon-dslrs/

EDIT.  Aperture mode is the closest I ever get to 'Auto' shooting.  You control the aperture and the camera takes care of exposure.

On my Canon camera,

Av = Aperture value
Tv = Time value
P = Program mode
M = Manual

There's more but I never use any of them.  I stick to either fully Manual or Av

I haven't got a clue about Nikon cameras, I've had nothing but Canon cameras and lenses.

AV is aperture mode. It's A on a Nikon (as well as fuji or sony). You need to use it in combination with exposure compensation to get the full good of it. I shoot Manual 95% of the time, though. Once you're used to it, the more control you give the camera the harder it is.

If you have a camera with an Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), Aperture mode is a gift, as you can see how the camera is choosing to expose.

Photography is my day job. I'm also drafted in to teach beginner and intermediate classes from time to time - specialising in portraiture and post-processing digital images. I'm sure there are others on here that do it as well. Happy to give anyone photography advice or critique, if they want it. Dunno if it's worth a thread of its own, though.

Well, I can open it to questions. Probably easier to address issues people are having.

As a starter, though, the main things I drum into people are:

1) Learn light. There's no way of becoming a good photographer without understanding light - natural light or otherwise. You have to teach yourself to see light the way a camera will see it.

2) Learn to shoot manual if you can. Even a £5k camera will make silly decisions. It's difficult and daunting at first, but once you master it you'll be much better (and find photography easier).

3) You don't need a super-expensive camera to take great pictures. Following points 1 and 2 are more important. My most favourite photo I've ever taken was with my iPhone.

4) If you have ££, invest in good lenses rather than chasing the latest camera body. I'd rather a cheap second-hand DSLR with a great lens than a £2k camera with a crappy kit lens.

5) Practice. Any time I take a class, I make a subtle note of their camera settings before they pack them away.  50% will come back the next week with the same settings and I'll know they haven't touched their camera. Practice is so important. Making shitloads of mistakes is all part of it. It's also important to listen to criticism - especially on technical aspects.

6) Find out what you like to shoot and focus (no pun) on that. I like photographing people so that's what I do. If you like sports, for example, concentrate on getting good at that. The more passionate you are about what you're photographing, the better you'll get at capturing it because you'll invest time in it.

A bit far from the budget of the initial post and mods feel free to delete, but I'll be putting up a shed-load of great camera equipment for sale over the next few weeks if anyone's interested.

Includes a mint condition Fuji XT2 plus 23mm F2 lens (barely used), 3xNikon D750 bodies (3 years old and well used but professionally maintained and will be getting all of them serviced/shutters replaced before selling), and loads of other nikon lenses and accessories.

For the Nikon gear, you only have to go to our website (above) to see what it's capable of.

Right folks.  Really got into video editing of late and really enjoying it.  Getting quite proficient with Adobe Premiere Pro.

Gonna try shooting my own footage now and want a good second hand DSLR or Mirrorless.

I’ve read loads of good articles on best video camera for beginners and all the big boys have a good entry model.

The 5d MkII is going for well over 3 ton for a pre-owned

I'm tempted with a brand new Canon EOS 4000d.  Can get the full kit with a 18-55mm Lens for about 300.

Been playing with me dads Nikon D50 today.  20 years old and one of the first DSLR's aimed at the consumer market.  6.1mp and takes better shots than my  12mp Iphone 7.

Took the plunge today and went Mirrorless.  Ordered the Panasonic Lumix G80.  Comes with a 12-60mm Lens with image stabilisation.  The Camera itself also has Dual Image Stabilisation.  Will address prime lenses and suchlike in the future.

While at Uni my lad has worked part time at John Lewis for years and is currently on furlough unfortunately.  He still gets his 12% discount though so picked up the full kit for £480.  Spent more than I originally planned but got an absolute bargain.  Could only just about get the same preowned Camera Body that cheap to be fair.

Money I have saved during lockdown has now gone :)

Can anyone recommend a good place (Cheap) for buying decent lenses?  Even second hand is fine by me.

I'm after a budget fast prime lens with a low f-stop for cool bokeh shots.  Looking for a MFT mount lens between 25-50mm.  Which equated to 50-100mm on a full frame camera.

cheers

In fact just looking for some camera chat if anyone fancies it?  Please don't let my next post be a GIF of tumbleweed :)
