Sorry if I came across dickage mate, just making sure he's getting the most out of his connection as with cable (rather than ADSL) it doesn't tend to matter if you're a distance away from the exchange.

Not at all. You didn't come across like that, and I wasn't being sarcky :)

Me too. The last week or so I've been repairing every download like mad, or ending up blocks short. Annoying.

Seems the problem isn't the completion but a bug with their servers after having a search, hasn't affected everyone.

Are you using Newsleecher? It's probably a good idea to have a fill/backup server (as I've just discovered). If you buy a block from http://www.blocknews.net... add that account to Newsleecher and set it as Priority 2. If there's any missing parts from your download on Astraweb it grabs them from the backup server, it doesn't redownload the whole file just little bits of data. Haven't had any problems now and it's pretty cheap, a 10GB block would probably last you a while!

What server are you using?

Since moving we are on Sky and getting 6.5Mbps - but my conection to Astraweb  is about 720KM/s

720KB/sec is probably about right although if you were on a true 6.5Mbps line you could get up to 812KB/sec

Thanks very much Kashinoda, your guide was really useful to help me get set up. Got it working last night & speeds are good.

I was onto a good thing with a fileserve permium acct and used Maxxed for football, BoB for small sized tv & movies, Boxing Scene for well, boxing & WarezBB for everything else but alas, I live in New Zealand now & they're introducing a file sharing law next month.  http://www.3news.co.nz/File-sharing-bill-a-warning-to-downloaders/tabid/419/articleID/207008/Default.aspx  Not sure how much of it is bluster but I've been thinking for a while that I should exercise a little more caution and Usenet & SSL encryption should help me stay off the radar.

Anyway, I've signed up to NZBMatrix as you recommended but would appreciate a steer in the right direction. Could anyone recommend good newsgroups for the following content:

Football (obviously!)
TV shows & films, 720p re encoded to small file sizes (like the stuff sc0rp & BoB share)
Documentaries
Boxing fights & documentaries, not just recent stuff but harder to find
Good (subjective term I know) music

Thanks in advance for any help.

You're welcome.

By good Newsgroups, do you mean websites where you acquire links (such as NZBMatrix?).

If you mean servers from which you download from, they all mirror each other any way.

I've always used Newsleecher and I'd recommend it over anything else, I use the one that I linked on the opening post. It's just very thorough whilst being  easy to use, also found its a lot better at accurately reporting speeds. Many like SabNZBd+, I've used it for a while but you have to interact with it through a browser or additional plugins, it's more flexible if you want to spend time tweaking etc. It's also cross platform and you can control it remotely, but if you just want a solid program use Newsleecher.

Yes mate, that's what I mean. As I was using rapidshare & fileserve for a few years, I found a few specialist sites with the content I'm interested in that I put in my last post. Have become spoilt with the content I could get & I'm looking for the same sort of stuff on Usenet, downloading glutton I've become!

No you can't mate, at least not in the volume & with the choice I've been enjoying. The boxing site I go on you can get hard to find fights, every fight for a fighters career, lots of boxing documentaries etc. Same with maxxed, the football content is huge, every Liverpool game, games from around the world, highlights, documentaries etc.

The content is not as wide ranging as this on nzbmatrix. I wouldn't expect it to be as it's a general site. I'm looking for specialist sites for football content, boxing etc. sure they're out there, I'm new to this Usenet lark so don't know where to look.

Newsbin has always been my preference.

EDIT: At least I think this is what I always used to use. I've not used Usenet for a good few months now because I use my friend's Rapidshare premium account, and I've reformatted my computer since then so the programme's not installed. Now having doubts about whether it was Newsbin I did previously use or not.

Just about to order a Western Digital TV Live HD Media Player to play movies and TV series. Does anyone own something similar?

I like the way that it will basically play anything in any format, and you can plug a hard drive in and be watching media in seconds. Getting sick of having to convert files to watch through the PS3.

Reasonable looking price too (£70).

Hello Usenetters. Looking for some advice on unpacking my files when I've downloaded them.

If say I've downloaded a TV series with multiple episodes, currently I'm unpacking them with WinRAR one by one. Takes quite a while, as I run QuickPAR each time as well to check that the blocks are all there.

Is there an easier way to do the whole series at once?

Thanks guys.

I know it's not really to do with newsgroups, but, I download and play all my mkv's and shiz on this HP Proliant Microserver. Works out around £120 when you get the £100 cash back. Add a few HDDs and a cheap passively cooled graphics card (I went for a 1GB ATi 5450 which cost ~£30) and you've got yourself a low powered, quiet, home theater PC. Really pleased with mine!

Don't know if that helps?
