Yeah, i knew his name, ive read a bit about the painting. I would be honoured to be associated in anyway with that painting. I'm so glad it's right on my doorstep too, whenever i'm at a loose end in town i go and have a look at it again.

Skull With A Burning Cigarette, Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh had a less than comfortable life, both inside his head and outside. This piece was done in 1885, when he was subsisting on a diet of bread, coffee and tobacco.

I remember reading in a psychology textbook about Van Gogh, and how his mental illness (most commonly thought to be schizophrenia) manifested itself in his work. This one is actually fine, I think, but if you have a look at some of his landscapes, some are mild and peaceful, while others are almost violent, with jagged edges and thick black outline.

I am ashamed to say I had never seen that painting before.  I presume this (below) is one of Vincent's more aggressive landscapes?

There's a few Salvador Dali's in Tate Liverpool at the moment, though my favourite one isn't there.  The Temptation of St. Anthony.  Its always struck a cord with me, think its because of the almost dizzying sense of scale and magnitude you get from the horse and elephants.

Absolutely fantastic stuff.
Aside from all the other visual weirdness in the picture, I wonder why he painted the horseshoes the wrong way round on the hooves?
I expect there is some significance. Anyone know?

That is cool. I looked up wiki to see if I could find anything more about it and got this.

Dalí's version depicts St. Anthony resisting temptations associated with a spider-legged horse and elephants.

My arse. The temptations are more closely associated with the naked women. I mean, who the fuck is tempted by spindly legged horses?

That is cool.

I really love surreal paintings like this, finding them incredibly thought provoking.

I'm always trying to imagine just what was going through the minds of the artists when they painted them.

I guess people like Dali don't come along too often, having that fantastic combination of unique strangeness of thought and also the skills to then communicate those thoughts so exquisitely. Having said that, while these paintings are stunning, they are not the sort of thing I'd consider hanging in the snug above the fire.

I heard that Dali, like so many gifted artists, was truly weird in real life. An apocryphal (perhaps apocopraphil !) story claimed he kept in his diary detailed daily records of his visits to the bog, complete with descriptions of the shape and size of his turds. I expect if digital cameras had been available when he was alive, perhaps he would have kept a photographic record.

From another source.

"In this picture temptation appears to Saint Anthony successively in the form of a horse in the foreground representing strength, sometimes also symbol of voluptuousness, and in the form of the elephant which follows it, carrying on its back the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing precariously balanced on the fragile pedestal, a figure which emphasizes the erotic character of the composition. The other elephants are carrying buildings on their backs; the first of these is a obelisk inspired by that of Bernini in Rome, the second and third are burdened with Venetian edifices in the style of Palladio. In the background another elephant carries a tall tower which is not without phallic overtones, and in the clouds one can glimpse a few fragments of the Escorial, symbol of temporal and spiritual order. The elephant theme appears several time in Dali’s works of this period: for example, in Atomica Melancholica of 1945 and Triumph of Dionysus of 1953. This picture was painted in the studio that the artist occupied for a few days next to the Colony Restaurant in New York. It is the first and only time that he participated in a contest. It was an invitational artistic competition for a painting of the theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony, organised in 1946 by the Loew Lewin Company, a movie- producing firm. The winning picture was to figure in a film taken from the story "Bel Ami" by Maupassant. Eleven painters took part in the competition, among them Leonora Carrington, Dali, Paul Delvaux, Max Ernst, and Dorothea Tanning. The prize was given to Max Ernst by jury composed of Alfred Barr, Marcel Duchamp, and Sidney Janis. All these works were shown at an exhibition in Brussels and in Rome during 1947."

If you're into weird, the work of Starowieyski is well worth a browse through (as are many of the Polish Painters).

His pictures have been for stage productions, operas etc.

Although he wasn't a painter but a photographer, I always loved the work of Bob Carlos Clarke
(A Cork boy Corky!).
Shame he topped himself the other year.

When you consider that much of his work was done before the days of Photoshop, it's really rather good.
He did have a thing for picturing two women on a motorbike quite a bit, but here's a tasteful weird one.

Changed my avatar as a result of a post in the Rafa thread from Farawayred who split the participants of the thread into Romantics, Realists and Socialist-Realists.  I rather presumptiously decided I was a socialist-realist and needed an avatar to match.

Here it is:

The Miner, Boris Wladimirskij, 1929

In the interests of equality, I have a companion piece:

Female Worker

While perhaps most famous for blatant propaganda pieces like these:

Wladimirskij also sailed rather close to the Gulag when he produced this:

Black Ravens, 1930s

The Black Ravens are the black cars of the NKVD, a symbol of fear for and repression for the Soviet people and the way in which millions were snatched from their homes and driven away to a lifetime of hard labour.  Just to hammer home the point the building in the background looks rather like a prison.  It got past the censor and the black ravens never came home to roost for the artist.

I meant to reply to your post about Daydream Nation... but now's a perfect time ;) See pic attached at the bottom. I lost out on it from a late bid on eBay... gutted. How lovely is that?

Did you see the series on Russian Art on BBC4 by any chance? I didn't catch all of the programmes but it was fascinating... many of those bizarrely gorgeous, sickly sweet yet sinister paintings on show. Would love to see a whole bunch of them in the flesh. You should definitely check out the work of Dubossarsky & Vinogradov - two painters from Russia who work together. I saw their first show in the UK years back - a single painting of the Queen on her throne surrounded by animals and English celebs like Kate Moss. It was called 'Painting For England' and the show was of that single painting. It was too big to hang in the gallery so they leant it against the wall across the diagonal - must have been 6 metres long and it looked fucking great. For a good few years they were marrying old Socialist realist ideas and history to their new capitalist utopia, often in the form of huge canvases. Been following their careers ever since... here's a few...

Rob, I want that Daydream Nation CD!

Those paintings are great too.  I did indeed watch the Russian Art series, did you see the bit where he was in the forgotten store rooms of the Tetryakov going through all the drawers of forgotten socialist realism and early communist posters and the like.  Superb.

I've wandered around that gallery and it is superb, it's probably changed and become more western now but when we trundled round it was cafe?  Niet.  Nice little shop selling socialist-realist teatowels?  Niet.  Mile after mile of great art?  Da!

That 'Harvest Celebration' looks a bit naughty.....

The 'En Plein Air' is quite funny. It's Stallone doing the painting in the background, his name is on the back of the canvas, and I assume the guy showing his muscles is meant to be Schwarzenneger.

The style is also a bit reminiscent of the early 1970's 'Rock Dreams' work of the late Guy Peelaert. He put lots of then famous rock stars in strange settings.

Rob, I want that Daydream Nation CD!

That's a bone-fide 1991 early Glasnot Russian black vinyl pressing of Daydream Nation. It ain't no CD. It's too beautiful for words. The cover is a photo of a candle... not a painting of a photo of a candle so it's gone 360 in a very poetic way.

I remember that Tetryakov visit yes... Graham-Dixon was wetting himself in the exact same way that I was wetting myself when coming across that Daydream Nation record. Great that you've been there... would love to go myself. Those tea towels would go great with my Joy Division oven gloves.

That 'Harvest Celebration' looks a bit naughty.....

They did many many 'outdoor group paintings'. Very prolific pair of painters. 'En Plein Air' is probably their most famous painting... and yes, it's Arnie. The broad in the first painting is Catherine Zeta Jones. Their style is also a bit Ladybird book illustration too, aswell as 70's/80's film posters. So much to enjoy in their paintings. My favourite of theirs is a small 20x30" painting of Bambi... can't find a pic of it tho.

I found my copy of that the other day. Some great images in there.

Over The City
2008
oil on canvas
195 x 195 cm

Call me an old softie but I love this picture.  Love the sense of story book wonder that it installs in the viewer and would hang it over my sofa.

As for the brilliant Russian Arts series on BBC a while back I thought the Russian Constructionists where the highlight of the series.  I studied the Russian Avant Guard movement (in particular Meyerhold) at University and I've always had a soft spot for the Russian Constructionists, love the sheer excitement and dynamism that they often convey.

I love the posters as well DTL, and the irony that it was Marxist propagandists who more or less invented 20th century advertising through posters like that belter above.

I also love Turner's "The Fighting Temeraire" above.  A copy hangs in our boardroom at work which always amuses me as it's themes are the decline of power and the end of things.

I saw this today in the tate, superb picture.

I find it amazing that you can just walk in off the street and see this for free.

Edit; it's picasso's portrait of a weeping woman.
