Gary Potter is a legend, saw him at Hawick Jazz Festival a few years ago & was blown away!

I asked him if he was Red or Blue though & he said he doesn't like Football!?

Cracking thread, I have always loved listening to Jazz on the radio and stuff but in terms of educating myself I didn't really know where to stand, some good ideas and suggestions on here, thanks and keep em coming!

Not particularly into Jazz meself well bar the obvious like Miles Davies, Charlie Parker and  Mingus etc but I had a mate who was well into it, particularly some geezer called Ornette Coleman so you might want to add him to your list.

Personally I was listing to Jazz Fm one night and I heard a track which sounded like the Jazz version of the Chemical Brothers, funky as fuck or should I say "Smokin" think it was called Crunch by The Brecker Brothers

Have been listening to lots of jazz of late and have really taken the above on board. If you had to name five must-have albums to buy (other than Kind of Blue, which seems to be a given) what would they be? I am stuck, because there seems to be so much and I can't afford to buy it all.

1. Sketches of Spain, Miles Davis
2. Koln Concert, Keith Jarrett
3. Lush Life, John Coltrane
4. Roadgame, Art Pepper
5. Lester leaps again, Lester Young

Thanks, Yorky. Would you avoid buying 'best of' type albums for jazz? It's tempting to buy the best of John Coltrane, for example, but part of the magic of jazz is the moment of the recording, I think, so does it spoil it?

I would avoid it - for the reason you mention. I'm listening to 'Lush Life' right now and part of its beauty is the piano-playing of Red Garland. I don't want another pianist crashing in on the next track. Take Miles Davis too. Possibly the two greatest jazz albums of all time are 'Kind of Blue' and 'Sketches of Spain'. It would be a bloody mess though to mix 'em up!

Eh Scally, I don't know if you checked 'Sketches' out. If not you really should. I don't know anyone who has heard that album without having their universe a bit re-arranged.

Used to have Sketches of Spain on cassette. Remember listening to it in the back seat of the car driving from South Spain to Santander with 3 mates. Kipping in the woods by the fire high up in the hills - big block of Moroccan hash, sun out, windows down, drinking gin and playing scrabble in the back seat - Mr Davis squawking away.  8) Heaven.

Absolute must buy.

Just sticking it on a CD right now, for my journey to work tomorrow... it won't quite be Spain and hash and gin, but the Welsh hills at sunrise are not too bad.

Might give Lush Life a whirl too...

So, I've been watching Treme recently, and have decided that I really like the jazz that seems to be played everywhere in New Orleans.

Does anyone know much about this kind of music? I'm just looking for the names of individuals or bands to listen to.

Cheers all!

Same thing happened to me, I just bought some compilation box sets of random jazz. You can also see what every song on the episodes are called by going on the Treme site, here it is for the  first episode browsing the site will get you to the different episodes. http://www.hbo.com/treme/index.html#/treme/episodes/1/01-do-you-know-what-it-means/music.html

I guessing its the dixieland style you're talking about which is great but you should also check out these happenin cats. Lee Dorsey, Dr John, The Meters, Dirty Dozen, Aaron Neville and of course Louis Armstrong. Best of's for all of these lads should do the business. What episode of Treme are you at? You should check out Kermit as well he's like a real person.

Not really into Jazz so i can't really help i'm afraid; but i can totally see where OP is coming from, Treme is brilliant and its music is so wonderful & infectious, particularly love it when the indian tribes start chanting and Kermit is great in it, not to mention the great title theme/ music.

Like i said im not in to Jazz (mainly due to the fact im not really exposed to it) but the show's music is really turning me, and like Salisbury Red i'd be interested in any recommendations.

These are great:

Shame shame shame (davis and Kermit)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2ggFMpnlPQ&feature=related
Busking couple: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsq6io2wKZQ&feature=related
Indian chanting- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mws6p0MGp6U&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xwpPTpVRGQ&feature=related

Loads more in the show but they're hard to find on youtube if you don't know any of the song titles.

If we're going outside of N'Orleans there's a few essentials that would'nt be too complex for first time listeners. Its hard not to sound like a dick when talking about Jazz. But I suggest putting all the bullshit to one sideand taking advice from Miles Davis  "Shhhh Listen"

Miles Davis - The Birth of Cool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNc3oKAHR_w

Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMINC9EOZME

Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXcRFAJDF0c

Not strictly Jazz but.........

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo5GcYeh7XA

Donald Byrd - Street Lady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIdt-s1hfmM

If anyone's actually interested I'll put up links for these

mmm....Nice.

As an old music tutor once said to me, play one note wrong and it's a mistake, play two notes wrong and it's jazz. ;)

But seriously, yes, it's all good stuff all though some of it can be a bit 'intense' and take a while getting into it.

I do like a lot of Weather Report stuff and Miroslav Vitous is still coming out with cool innovative things, as is Chick Corea.

Sadly, Youtube appears to be banned where I am at the moment, but yes, he was an exceptional talent with a very tragic ending.
There's a clip on youtube of just himself doing a solo piece, can't quite remember it might have been a Joni Mitchell song or something like that, quite unexpected, and it was absolutely outstanding.

Not a nut, sure some will show up before long to give a better idea of whats what. But I like a bit of Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, the Marsalis clan & Herbie Hancock that I can think of right now, basically very mainstream stuff, sure someone with a better handle will give some nice obscure tips.

Check out Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, its just beautifully cool.

Also Jimmy Smith - Root Down is a particular fav.

other vinyl I've bought

The Art Tatum-Ben Webster Quartet (Jazz Tracks 951) 180G Sealed
Art Blakey's Jaz Messengers with Thelonious Monk 140G
The Bridge - Sonny Rollings 140G
Oscar Peterson Trio - Night Train ( Verve Dutch)
John Coltrane & Don Cherry - The Avant-Garde
The Indispensable Bix Beiderbecke (1924-1930) Double LP Jazz Tribune No 48 ( French)
Art Tatum - Alone With Friends
Art Tatum and his friends - Vol 1
Stephane Grappeli - plays Cole Porter (double)
Dave Brubeck & Paul Desmond
John Coltrane - Giant Steps

all is in excellent/NM condition. Luckily the wife has absolutely no idea how much this has cost.

I have no children on RAWK. Anyone claiming to be my daughter is a blagger trying to bask in reflected glory.

Now that baby is an LP.

all is in excellent/NM condition. Luckily the wife has absolutely no idea how much this has cost.

... but she gets to hear a great noise. You need a bit of Mingus tho ;)

You're absolutely right. I knew I had some more somewhere

Mingus - Tijuana Moods
Menuhin and Grappelli - Jealousy
Chris Barber - Live at the Palladium
and A Stan Getz one I can't see

All on Japanese vinyl? The aural porn stuff? Nice... I've yet to listen to it.

Sun Ra needs buying of course as do The Art Ensemble of Chicago. Here's Toro... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JpnJRzPwU

I seen Sun Ra last year, amazing show, I burst out laughing at one stage. Bonkers stuff they were playing, the best way you could describe it as is a fire in a petshop.
