Holdsworth seems to be the master of cheesy jazz guitar tho no? Awful one dimensional wankery to me and I'm a Zappa fan.
Oh no no, he's got far more in his locker than cheesy guitar. Yeah he plays
really fucking fast at times (Vai and Malmsteen fans take note, there's fast playing then there's Allan Holdsworth...) but if you read about his influences he's entirely influenced by jazz horn players like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, etc. He wants the guitar to 'freak out' like a sax player does when they are really going for it, and he actually doesn't count any guitar players as influences. He's lumped in with the rock 'shredders' only out of convenience, there is something far more complex and thoughtful coming out of Holdsworth's music than merely shredding, it's entirely unique. His book 'Just for the Curious' outlines his take on music theory in staggering detail, the guy is a true genius and was using fast playing as a tool of expression years before your 80's hair metal shredders. In terms of pure technical ability no one comes anywhere near the guy, he's on a different planet entirely.
But yes, some of his work can be a bit challenging to listen to, and to be honest I don't think Holdsworth would have it any other way. I'll have a nose about the interweb for some of his stuff and attempt to embed it later...
