Holdsworth seems to be the master of cheesy jazz guitar tho no? Awful one dimensional wankery to me and I'm a Zappa fan. Is the joy and wit limited by his technical ability? One for purists I guess. One not for purists of course is Sir Richard Bishop, hated by all at Wire Magazine.

Absolutely love 'Headhunters' and 'Secrets' by Herbie Hancock, true 1970's, funky jazz. Purists would say it isn't really 'true' jazz, but well worth a listen.

Ya wouldn't class it as Jazz really more fusion/funk. I prefer 'Secrets' especially 'People Music", quality.

Jazz doesn't get the exposure it deserves in the mainstream - JazzFM for instance is cheesy beyond belief. Our casual aural universe hears jazz on a very particular level - one that's chilled, cozy, inoffensive and friendly. It gets used to advertise Levi jeans etc. More often than not it's dull. At the other end, It's surrounded by a sometimes impenetrably stuffy intellectualism that naturally puts people off. Another reason that jazz is sometimes difficult to get a hold off is that musicians move all over the place and don't set themselves up as a 'band' or unit that is the main currency in pop and rock. Not so much anyway.

Couldn't agree more. I play a bit of Jazz on the side and love aspects of the genre, yet too often you can only hear cheesy, overindulgent bollocks perpetuated by a very exclusive group. Some bitterness here perhaps. And yet there is so much going on which is fantastic, which doesn't get the exposure it deserves.
For original recordings, few can beat the great Django Reinhardt, torchbearer of the Gypsy Jazz tradition. Jazz with drive. A real early influence on my own guitar playstyle, and something I keep coming back to.

Django Reinhardt - Django's Tiger (on the chord changes to Tiger Rag)

For more modern taste, developments in Electro Swing, fusion of early jazz swing with modern sensibilities.

Caravan Palace - Jolie Coquine

Holdsworth seems to be the master of cheesy jazz guitar tho no? Awful one dimensional wankery to me and I'm a Zappa fan.

Oh no no, he's got far more in his locker than cheesy guitar. Yeah he plays really fucking fast at times (Vai and Malmsteen fans take note, there's fast playing then there's Allan Holdsworth...) but if you read about his influences he's entirely influenced by jazz horn players like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, etc. He wants the guitar to 'freak out' like a sax player does when they are really going for it, and he actually doesn't count any guitar players as influences. He's lumped in with the rock 'shredders' only out of convenience, there is something far more complex and thoughtful coming out of Holdsworth's music than merely shredding, it's entirely unique. His book 'Just for the Curious' outlines his take on music theory in staggering detail, the guy is a true genius and was using fast playing as a tool of expression years before your 80's hair metal shredders. In terms of pure technical ability no one comes anywhere near the guy, he's on a different planet entirely.

But yes, some of his work can be a bit challenging to listen to, and to be honest I don't think Holdsworth would have it any other way. I'll have a nose about the interweb for some of his stuff and attempt to embed it later...

For guitar jazz you've got your early Django Reinhardt as well as greats such as John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell, but for me the master is Allan Holdsworth. Completely unlistenable to some, an enlightened but troubled genius to others. I would recommend 'Fred' as a starter fro ten, the solo on it is a technical tour-de-force and unlike anything I've ever heard being played on a guitar before.

For me, no one even comes close to Grant Green's melodies on the guitar. I'm a huge Django fan, and I 'borrow' a lot of his style (the minor 6th chords, the gypsy strumming, etc) for my own music, but Grant Green is just a simple genius.

On another note (see what I did there?), after a visit to the doctor where I was told I have the lungs of a 77 year old man, I picked up a trumpet. Hopefully I can make some sweet Jazz tones in a few years, myself, all the while repairing my old-man-lungs.

Bock to Bock - Wes Montgomery

Is there another form that uses the vibes as much as jazz? I can't think of one.I love the way Montgomery is in the background and allows all the other musicians in with him to show off their chops.
Beautiful piece.

Exercise is to the body what reading is to the mind.

"If I hadn't doped, I would never have won". "Doping improves your performance between 5 and 7 per cent, and maybe 10 to 12 per cent when you are in a peak shape.

"Doping isn't addictive but it's an instrument of power: whoever wins attracts the money; for themselves, the team and the sponsors"

Boy, Erroll is, and with no exaggeration, a genius. Beautiful work, so good that I'm incapable of not paying attention.
