Realise that your going to be nervous and this may affect your game. You don't know if you have any 'tells' at the moment, because you've never played live before - you'll soon know if someone has a read on you in the game though. Try your best to stay calm and stick to playing a solid hands.

With their being 10 people at the table, remember that your JQ, or JK will usually almost be beaten every time by a better preflop hand. Unlike short handed tables, these hands are usually winning and safe to play them if it's cheap enough to see the flop.

Just try and stay relaxed, do NOT have any alcohol and do NOT lose your focus if theirs any sexy women at the table. Do not tell anybody at the game that this is your first live tournament, because they're bound to stay making regular moves on you.

Stick to the same strategy throughout the game and loosen up a bit once you get to the last 5-8 of the tournament. Remember that this is your first tournament live, so don't expect to win. Use it to build your experience.

Good luck.

Don't let adrenaline or nerves get the better of you. Last thing you want is a shaky hand, especially when stacking your chips etc. Try to be aggressive so that you don't get picked off too easily, but no when to just fold and let the rest play.

Most importantly - watch everyone, and don't make it seem like its your first live game.

If you played online, you know the rules. Here are some live game tips.

When you get a big hand dont look down at your chips immediately - its a tell - you are already thinking about how much you are going to bet.

When you fold look at the other players still in the hand closely - this is when you pick up tells

Where sunglasses - it may seem a bit naff but you feel more confident with them on.

When you get your cards concentrate on doing the same thing everytime. Look at them, place them down carefully and pause.

Add up small blind and big blind. If your stack is only 5 times that amount or less - no calling - pick a hand and move allin.

Good luck

Use your position at the table wisely. Calling an average hand when first up often ends up being raised. Unless you have the balls to call the raise, or re-raise, your folded hand will have cost you uneccessary chips

I've played quite a bit on line, normally going for the 10 seater tournaments.
I have won a few but would not say I'm great by any means. I am looking to win, but know realistically that I will probably walk away with a lighter wallet.

How will I know if I have any tells?

Everyone has tells. Even if you are really concentrating for first 20 minutes on keeping still etc. you will end up showing them over the few hours of the game. Just go and enjoy yourself.

Have you ever played a Rebuy before? The tactics are different than Freezeout. You will get people prepared to rebuy 5 or 6 times. They will be wild at the start trying to at least treble up all with the intention of building a big stack for when the rebuy period ends. Then they will settle down and play a solid game.

Is this a pub game or in a casino? If its only a pub game then all the advise is nearly worthless as you are probably up against a)drunks b)fish having a laugh.

It is not a 'pub' game as such as it is at a local businessman's house. He has a large barn converted into a bar.

One thing in my favour is they are having a tutorial before the competetion to teach the green people the rules. ???

I have a good idea of how to play the game and have been playing for over 2 years. One buy in after the initial is all that is allowed.

I just hope there are loads of 'fish' as you put it.

Sweet! Just play solid and hope your luck's in.
As one pro put it. 'These days people can play on the internet for 6 months and gain experience that used to take us 20 years'.

Only problem with lots of 'green' people is that you make a decent raise and get 7 callers? Then you dont know where you're at!

Enjoy!

Biggest tip I can offer you:

If playing against Hightown Phil, and there's even a slight possibility of a 2-6 straight, he has it. Only play if you know your hand beats it.

On a table of 10 people, stick to playing premium hands while the blinds are small. AA, KK, QQ, or AK and AQ suited or off suit, maybe AJ and A10 also (in a one night tournament you cant afford to bin these hands, although in a multiple day tournament you would). The later you act in a hand is a big advantage. Play tight in early position, slightly looser in late position when there have been all folds in front of you.

As the numbers drop and you reach the final table, once there are 5 people left any hand becomes playable. But bear in mind, more than half of all poker hands turned over are won on a high card. Its a big advantage to have, so if someone puts you all in, short of having a pair in your pocket, I'd be reluctant to play any hand lacking an ace, even KQ.

In terms of other players, dont watch all of them at once. In your first game, maybe choose the players to your left and right to watch. Get used to watching them, and it'll become second nature.

I'd be too, but if you had a pair, of say sevens, on it became a three of a kind on the flop, i'd play big time.

For example, A6 offsuit is 54% to 46% to beat KQ suited. So if someone puts you all in and you're sitting on KQ suited, as soon as an ace comes up in your opponents hand you're odds against to win simply because of the high card. Thats the advantage an overcard gives you. These odds shrink should your opponent have real strength and have an AK or AQ against your KQ.

End of Tourney : Blinds are big.
Mate... to win you sometimes have to take bets 60 40 against. Also when a small stack goes allin I'd call with something like J7 because you probably have two live cards- unless you are against something huge. The worst hands to call with are something like A5 or K2 coz you could be dominated.

Enough insight into my mind. I have to prepare for the RAWK championship!  ;D

I use to only use Bet365 but I use EuroBet more often now mainly because there's a lot more players on it.
If there's enough interest, I could try and arrange one online. If that goes well, we'll do as Adam suggested - have a live game round his house. ;)

Why is this on sport?

Why is Chess a sport?

Chess is pure mental skill and strategy, requiring no athletic abilities whatsoever. And chess is a sport. You read about it in the sports section and hear about it in the sports programs. How is poker any different then?

I like Chess & Poker, but neither are sports imo. They are games. For me, sport has to have a physical essence to it, games don't. Other games include darts & snooker, they aren't sports, they are simply very popular games. If they were sports, then so would mouse trap be....

I'm up for playing online against you guys on a private table. I would never play for money online on a public table though, utter madness....
