Last night might be a big step toward finding that best balance. As I've said before, and a few others have as well, Keita should be playing slightly further back. Klopp likes two centrals one of whom holds and one of whom runs. With Fab holding, Keita progressing the ball and Hendo as the attacking mid, we looked much more potent. Although Milner's industry also played a part in that.

It might not work every time, but it's a relatively little used combination by us, which other sides will not be used to, and which could help us own the run in and CL knockouts.
He wasnt that deep though he playing inbetween the lines most of the game. Fabinho had more completed passed then him. I know you want your midfield to stay inside the opposition shape but during buildup at times will go to 3 at the back and a CM will drop inbetween or on the side of the cbs, I feel with the 5 at the back by Southampton  we wanted to avoid that. Bouremouth game where he completed 88 passes(only topped by Virgil that game) felt like the whole attack was built by him and virgil starting it. That was not the case vs Southampton. Felt we really wanted to pack the central channel vs Southampton with the 3 cbs and then use the our full back to pin back Southampton full backs.

I meant more that fact that Hendo seemed to have asked for/been told to play further forward, which could allow Keita, in future, to not feel that he has to do that, and could allow him to play the running game he was more used to in Germany, with Fab providing the base.

May mean nothing, but that last 20 minutes or so could help us find a new midfield combination that the opposition are not used to

That's interesting in regards to Klopp's assertion that we had difficulties until we played a higher line.

I’m glad he got that monkey off his back by scoring. It might give him that extra boost of confidence for the remaining games.

He got dispossessed about 3 times in the first 10-15 minutes or so which suggests he still hasn't quite got acclimatized with the pace of the league and that split second less you have on the ball compared to Germany.

That said he grew into it and i really like his forward runs into the box from deep.

Yeah, he needs to start games a bit more carefully. Just play a few simple passes and get into the flow of the game, before trying the more difficult dribbles and passes. Theres no need to rush things the first few minutes. He's got the quality, but needs to be a bit more street smart.

The deeper he plays, the more costly it will be to make mistakes. I love his dribbles from deep, but maybe hes better off playing a bit higher up for now. If he plays too carefully, he's also not very useful.

Twice now he has been denied penalties in similar circumstances - once on Friday and once v Leicester. Both involved Keita trying to breakdown the low block by using a one-two. His touch against Southampton was heavy, admittedly, but anywhere else on the field the botched tackle would have been penalised.

I thought Jurgen, or maybe Hendo or Van Dijk, could have made more of a fuss about the denied penalty and the fact that Keita has been upended twice now after similar moves. Alex Ferguson would have done so in the past. Just as a little warning to say "We're watching you refs now to see if you get it right next time."

He still has a look to him that say “I don’t deserve to be here”. I think he perhaps has a bit of inferiority going on. Not being able to communicate and having spells injured will only compound this.

I honestly think he’s still settling down. Little breakthroughs like getting the goal will be helpful.

That said, sometimes players untimely never settle. It will be an important summer for him. He needs to find his place.

Have to agree, he's playing nothing like the player that was at Leipzig. It's like he's petrified of make a mistake, 90% of things he does in a LFC shirt are safe and predictable.

Think this sums it up quite well. Hopefully a couple things go his way and his confidence starts to develop. I was really hoping be got the winning goal on Friday.

Stick him in for Gini against Porto, Gini looks knackered and he’ll have Fab and Henderson covering him.

Every time we’ve seen him play it’s like he has instructions to stand next to Bobby. When he has the game in front of him he looks much more at ease.

Made a really good contribution with the goal on Friday. Hopefully it does his confidence the world of good.

Thought he was the best player out of our midfield 3 that started. That 3 who started struggled in parts against Southampton. Fabinho didn't have his best game but seemed to have to cover a lot of space on his own at times. Played so much better in the last 30 minutes when he got more support. Ditto Keita.

I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

It's been covered here - he had some early difficulties and then woke up. The goal was so important for him and the team (obviously) - and the fact that he is willing to make the runs into the box can help take pressure off the front 3 to have to do everything.

Can't say I agree to be honest. He tries a lot more lower percentage moves than what any of our other midfielders would. He's almost constantly trying to beat players with a dribble. I think it's less that he's played it safe and more than it's not come off as often as he's used to.

I think he's something of a high risk high reward midfielder, which hasn't always worked in his favour for selection this season. More often than not we've favoured more control in midfield, and my sense is Naby maybe tries things too often to achieve that outcome.

Yeah definitely he could be really important for the title run in (and also the champions league) and if he contributes to the last 5 games we'll all forget about the rest of his season.
