LFC Most Wins in Top Flight season

30 from 42 games - 1978/79  (71%)

26 from 38 games - 2013/14 (68%)

26 from 40 games - 1987/88 (65%)

26 from 42 games - 1922/23, 1963/64, 1965/66, 1981/82, 1985/86 (62%)
,

Notable outside top flight

27 from 34 games in 1904/05 (79%)

22 from 28 games in 1893/94 (79%)

22 from 30 games in 1895/96 (73%)

27 from 42 games in 1961/62 (64%)

So, this season, we have already equalled our most wins in a top flight season of 38 games or less.

Indeed, we have equalled our second best ever win tally in a top flight season.

In all seasons, 26 is our joint fourth highest win total (behind 30 achieved once, and 27 twice).

Heve we ever had a season where none of the top 6 dropped a single point against the bottom 3? *touch wood*

In the premier league era, this is now the second best ever start, for all, clubs, over the first 35 games.

The best ever was Man City last season, with 93 points by this stage.

We are one of 3 teams to have been on 88 points after 35, the others both being Chelsea (in 04/05 and 05/06 respectively).

Our GD is the best of those 3: + 59 compared to +54 and +49.

Within the same time period, we are only the third team to complete the 35th game of the season with no more than one defeat.  The other were Arsenal in 03/04 (aka "The Invincibles") with 0 losses, and Chelsea in 04/05.

Also within the PL era, only one club has ever had a better Goal Difference after 35 games.  We currently have +59, which has only been beaten by Man City.  However, they have beaten it 3 times:  +75 in 17/18; +60 in 11/12 and 13/14.   They'll beat it a 4th time this season unless Man U thrash them by at least 6 goals on Wednesday.

Cheers for that. Looking at that list of seasons, does that mean we'd have our best ever ppg if we got 97 points considering 78-79 was 42 games?
if I came home to allison in bed with my wife I'd ask him to phone Virgil to see if he wanted to pop round too.

Thanks, Jack!
Points-per-game looks even better. The 98 pts in 42 games is 2.333 ppg, and now we have 2.514 ppg!
If we lost all our remaining games, we will have 2.316 ppg.
If we win against Huddersfield and we lost all our remaining games, we will have 2.395 ppg, beating the previous record.

What a season!

We only need one more point to secure our best ever top flight PPG average.

It's 50/50 for a result that will help us. It could be worse.

Looking at the real league table. Us and City have ridiculous numbers versus the rest, in terms of wins, losses, GF, GA, GD, and points. Just for example, out goal difference is more than double that f the team in third, and ours isn't even the best. Without doing any research, I have to think this season is an outlier, but a different outlier than last season.

In over a hundred seasons in the top flight, this is only the 14th time that we have kept at least 20 clean sheets.

This is the first time that we have done it for 10 years.

We would need two more to equal the 38 game record.  One more would make this our 3rd best ever top flight season in terms of Clean Sheets Per Game.

Twenty Clean Sheets in Top Flight

Total        Year       Clean Sheets Per Game (rank)

28  -  1978/79    0.67  (1)

23  -  1975/76    0.55  (3=)

23  -  1977/78    0.55  (3=)

22  -  1970/71    0.52  (8=)

22  -  1971/72    0.52  (8=)

22  -  2005/06    0.58  (2)

21  -  1922/23    0.50  (10=)

21  -  1968/69    0.50  (10=)

21  -  1987/88    0.525 (7)

20  -  1983/84    0.48  (12=)

20  -  1981/82    0.48  (12=)

20  -  2008/09    0.53  (5=)

20  -  2006/07    0.53  (5=)

20  -  2018/19    from 36 games so far, so 0.56 CSPG

We did the job this season on the rest of the league, but we've been outperformed on the Top 6 by City.

If we end up 2nd, it'll be a lot like Rafa's best season when United went on a 100 point season ppg rate for the last 30 matches, incredibly unlucky :no

2.83 PPG equates to roughly 108 points over a 38 game season. That is just ridiculous. There is nothing else we could have done.

Here's a 1st half to 2nd half comparison:

What's absolutely nuts when you look at City's season is this:

First 15: W13 L0 D2
Next 9:  W5 L4 D0
Last 13: W13 L0 D0

Other than that blip in mid season, they've gone 26 wins & 2 draws!

Last 8: W8 L0 D0

Both teams had a 9 match "bad" spell, otherwise, unbelievable really!

City's second half of the season, what can you say? It's just insane, 18 wins out 19. They almost matched their incredible run at the start of last season, can they reach this level for a third season in a row? I didn't even think they would this year, but unfortunately, I was proven wrong, so I suppose the new target for a league win is 95+ points as long as Guardiola is at City.

Also, shocking how bad Chelsea, Arsenal (and to a lesser extent, Spurs) were away from home to the Top 10 teams.

Also, amazing how good we were against the bottom 10, home & away.
