Tiger Woods - Greatest Sportsman Ever?
« on: November 27, 2009, 08:09:20 pm »
Hope he's ok.

Easily the greatest sportsman of all time.
So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Seeing how Nicklaus is the greatest golfer, I can't see how he can be.

By winning more Majors?  He's only 4 behind Nicklaus.

Number of wins is what many people would base it on.

On that basis he is the third greatest golfer of all time.

The 2nd greatest major winner of all time.

If you think Woods isn't as good as Nicalaus you will have a hefty bet at that price.

But you won't.

No, you said Woods is the greatest sportsman of all time.

I said he isn't becuase he isn't even the greatest golfer of all time. I never said he wouldn't be did I?
He probably will win more majors than Nicklas' by the time he finshes his career.
But your bet has got fuck all to do with your original point.
When woods becomes the greatest golfer of all time, you might be able to agrue to toss about him being the greatest sportsman ever, but at the moment that claim is a joke.

Your reasoning is ludicrous.

So in your mind he's going to beat the major record but until he does he's not the best golfer of all time. You must lead an exciting life if all your opinions are formed by misleading stats.

No in my mind he might, but you are already crying it in.

Whats so misleading about the No of Majors he's won compared to Nickluas?
That's the only objective thing you can compare the two with.

Anyway, lets have a laugh.

Rather than me trying to make a case for Woods not being the greatest golfer of all time, lets hear why you think he's the greatest sportsman ever?

Absolutely I am. There's no doubt in my mind he will reach and surpass the record.

What's misleading is Tigers age. He's 33 which is young in golf. I doubt there is any sane person in the world that thinks he won't get to 18, he's got nearly 20 years to do so. Of course he won't need that though.

Golf is one of the most difficult sports in the world to master, it's not like tennis where it's matchplay. Come Sunday when Tiger enters the fold the rest just crumble, the aura of the man is incredible and he often makes good players look shit.

I doubt many people who actually watch him could name a person within sport that is better under pressure. In fact I'd love to hear someone even dispute it. He's way ahead of everyone in terms of bottle and talent.

At the very least he'll have 16 majors this time next year.

That's funny, I always thought darts was considered a drinking game and not a sport...

Having a laugh by the way, considering they're not allowed to drink in competitions anymore...

Not really. Snooker veers dangerously close to pub games.

I would definitely say if you have to walk an 18 hole course with your bag normally by the end you are pretty knackered. Though i can spend a lot of that time swinging the club at the ground or thin air so that may have something to do with it.

You can achieve the same effect by walking your dog and carrying a stick.

He dicks on every other sportsman.

Ok...  certainly one of the best golfers of all time (though arguably not the greatest) I'd question whether any golfer can really be the best sporstman ever. Golf is a game primarily of technique and mental toughness. I know modern golfers are fit but they aren't athletic and I'd expect the best sportsman ever to combine natural ability, technique, mentality, athleticism and stamina in the one package.

So regardless of who the greatest sportsman ever might actually be (separate discussion), I just can't accept that it would be anyone who strolls round a park, whacking balls with a stick.

Golf - natural ability + technique + mentality

Football - natural ability + technique + mentality + athleticism + stamina

Tennis - natural ability + technique + mentality + athleticism + stamina

Rugby - natural ability + technique + mentality + athleticism + stamina

Athletics - natural ability + technique + mentality + athleticism + stamina

Boxing - natural ability + technique + mentality + athleticism + stamina

In my opinion any of the candidates would come from those sports plus a few more... maybe it's just me but I find it hard to accept the "greatest sportsman ever" would wear casual slacks, a polo shirt and jumper while he walks around the course.

And on that basis, golf would fit in a group with snooker and darts.

Put it another way. Here's the reigning Masters Champion in all his sporting glory. The other guy is Tiger Woods.
