The Punk Rock appreciation thread.......,
« on: June 9, 2008, 03:06:08 am »
There's been a few threads on here about Punk.

Connielfc started one about The Ramones a while ago and Filler started one about the Pistols. It was clear from both of them threads that there's lads n' lasses who like their punk on here.

Well, if you like your punk, then put it down here who your influences are and more so, who you think have had the biggest influence on punk music over the past 30 odd years.

Whether you like old classic punk, new wave, street punk, Oi!, ska punk, thrash, pop punk, hardcore, skater stuff, anarcho punk, political or otherwise, leave your idiotic or drunken (or straight edge!), meanderings in here. (unless you're an Emo). :wave

I'll start first. I love most punk from it's inception to today. Whether it's some shite local band or someone like The Clash, it all has some sort of relevance. It'd be what gets me up in the morning, and along side L.F.C. and its history, it has the most influence on my life.

So, if you've read this far down, what's your thoughts on it? Have you any good stories or anecdotes about seeing any punk bands live? Have you any bands you think should be listened to by more, whether local or legendary? Have you any views on punk in general that you think need airing???

Write your shite here...........,

I'm in to ska punk at the moment.

Went to go see Reel Big Fish in February, little did I know that warm up band Streetlight Manifesto are basically all the members of the original Catch 22 (their debut, Keasbey Nights being one of my most favourite albums).

Had I known I'd have bothered listening to them.

Yeah, Keasbey Nights is a deadly album. I liken Catch 22 too, but I have to say that Reel Big Fish just annoy the shite out of me! Ever listened to Operation Ivy or even Choking Victim? Good dirty ska punk! A little more dangerous than Reel Big Fish!

I loved The Clash though.  I guess most of the other bands I really liked are better classified as post-punk really. Magazine, Devo, Gang of Four, PIL etc

Punk kickstarted a musical scene that had become moribund. It injected a freshness and energy back into the music business.
But there is actually not a huge amount of actual punk I like listening to now. New Wave yes. Punk no.
I have come to regard that whole scene as quite similar to the hippy thing that preceeded it - hopelessly naive.
I knew a bloke in my hometown that played guitar in a punk band. I can remember him telling me that his band weren't going to do any gigs because they "didn't want to sell out." I mean jeez.
Anyway. The Undertones first album is timeless. The best collection of young, poppy, infectious, garage band barre chord new wave you'll ever hear.

Pistols, Stranglers, Banshees, Clash, Buzzcocks, Radiators From Space, PIL, Magazine, Undertones ... those bands meant something to me .... and in truth still do .... that's the era I really started listening to music in ... so I'll be nostalgic like that

Oh absolutely. Crass, X ray Spex, Becky Bondage, Stiff Little Fingers, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedy's even the much maligned Damned.  Love em all. Most of all I love the way they opened the flood gates and for five years record companies were in turmoil and loads of good music snuck through the door before the Cowell's of their day could check the guest list.

First saw The Damned support T.Rex in '77, and have followed them ever since.

Still put on a great gig, though the fact that they are still playing at their age is pretty much against all what punk stood for in the first place !

Vice Squad, The Clash, UK Subs, Crass, the Ruts, New York Dolls, Television for me...then I started to get into the really good Yank stuff (yeah, I know, Tele and NYD's were Yanks), like Black Flag, Dead Kens, Operation Ivy, Ramones and Rancid..bloody cracking music, full of energy, bile and fuck you!  The Ska backbone to a lot of it just picks me up and takes me away to a happier place, when anything was possible and "Big Brother" was just Orwell's nightmare and not the regular TV hell we endure now.

Agree with you there mate. Good bands who are still making high octane, socially relevant music today and keeeping a sense of humour. I heard Capdown played their last ever gig the other day. Shame, I only got into them a couple of years ago.

Ya mentioned most of my favourite bands there Spence. Got into the Ramones first when I was about 12. Everything else for me came from that. Love the ska element in op Ivy, Rancid etc. too, (not that it wasn't there in older punk bands like The Ruts for instance). It picks ya up. (Sound System!). Not to make you feel like an aul c*nt mate, but I don't here many people your age who get a buzz out of the yank ska/punk stuff! It goes to show that good music is....., good music.

The punk era was 76 to 79 and no more. But the 'spirit of punk' still lives on and there are plenty of bands around toady trying to recapture that spirit and very few decent bands around today that weren't influenced by it.

Unfortunately all good things have to come to an end macco, just glad to have seen them at their peak, one of the best live bands ever, growing up I was more a hardcore kid,I know people like to split punk and hardcore in to seperate Generes but for me there the same,"Sick of it all " "Madball" " Better than a Thousand " "7 Seconds" and Gorilla Biscuits will  remain some of my biggest influences for all time, but I have to put a special mention for a DC Band that I love to this day Battery http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=232194270 traditIonal hardcore at its best.

All that died was the high street fuckfest that drowned out the "real punk scene".
The music still kicks arse and the bands still come through. It's just evolved a bit.

70's punk- like the Clash, Sex Pistols, Cockney Rejects, etc.
Old school hardcore- like Bad Brains, Black Flag, Misfits, Negative Approach, etc.
Melodic punkrock- like Alkaline Trio, Hot Water Music, even Bad Religion

Some great great bands being mentioned in this thread. The Ramones, Wire (Pink Flag, what a record!), and the Buzzcocks are my favourites from that era. The stuff that came before punk: The Modern Lover's debut, Patti Smith's Horses, Iggy (solo and Stooges), still sound dead incredible to this day. And the stuff that came after was almost as good: Gang Of Four, PIL, The Fall. Must have been an exciting time to be a music fan.

I was in a pub once about 25 years ago and Captain Sensible (bassist in The Dammed for those too young to have a clue) was sitting across from me looking at something in a newspaper.
He looked across from me and said: "Excuse me, have you got a pen?"
I said: "I'm sorry. I'm afraid I don't."

An absolutely seminal moment in the punk movement. It never recaptured its old spirit after that point.

When I was...ahem!... a punk rocker...Elvis and the Beatles where boring old farts from a era before the dinosaur's....but in actual time, it was  25 years after Elvis and 15 after the Beatles...but things had moved so much on from them....BUT!! ..Punk was 31 years ago!!!!!....yet it seems to hold more influence now than the BOFS in my day!!...fact is when I was 17 I was closer to Elvis than I am to the Clash now!!..so...Punks not dead, but it is a bit old!

Very picky when it comes to this subject. I'm a massive Dead Kennedy's fan and I love Discharge and Conflict. Some Anti-Nowhere League is decent and when i'm in the mood for some mental stuff you can't go wrong with Rudimentary Peni

As for other, not so hardcore types (by that i mean more modern stuff) like ska core etc. Early Bosstones stuff is great in the summer, Devils night out especially, Voodoo Glow Skulls are awsome (esp live), Snuff are amazing both on record and live and when i want stupid 2 minute songs that make me chuckle I stick ont he Mr T Experience.
And when you find yourself along the untrodden path
Remember me with a smile, a drink, a gesture or a laugh

I've seen The Damned dozens of times, it's all front with Captain Sensible, he's actually just a quiet, well spoken regular bloke off stage, and always has been.

He told me once he was cleaning toilets at a Croydon gig were T.Rex were playing, saw all the screaming girls and thought that's the life for me.

Marc Bolan spotted him wearing a T.Rex t.shirt some years after that Croydon gig so invited him to support him on his 1977 tour.

Loved the record collecting aspect of punk, all the coloured vinyl,

The UK Subs singles were the best for colored Vinyl collecting. There were a few difficult ones to get hold of too. Stranglehold on Red vinyl if my memory serves me.

Like you BrightoPete I got well into post Pistols punk.

I got well into CRASS and those Anarchist bands like Discharge and Conflict, 'Feeding of the 5000' by Crass being one of my favorite albums ever. Then came the Dead Kennedy's and their remarkable front man Jello Biafra.

You mentioned The Subhumans. Loved the track 'Religious wars'

I couldn't get enough of the Exploited, Angelic Upstarts, Subs, Anti-Nowhere League.

Then came all the Oi bands like The Business, Cock Sparra and Section 5.

good days ;D

Always loved the bass intro to Warhead by the UKSubs. It was one of the first things I ever learnt to play on the guitar.

Yeah, that bass line intro is deadly. Up there with the one from Black Flag six pack.

Last time I saw the UK Subs was a few years back but Jesus, Charlie Harper must be 105 now. And he doesn't live in a car, the lying bastard. He lives in a flat in Camden. (Maybe).
