More visible shirts in case there is heavy fog again.

So it was fog and not smoke bombs then 😂

I would say playing Red Star and Ajax in that early 70's period changed our "philosophy" to how we go about doing things in Europe.

I do remember us being far more cagey than in the league but I thought it was just nerves as it was such a big thing for English teams then.

After playing Red Star, the coaching staff had a complete rethink of how to play in Europe.  LFC did a video about the matches against Red Star a few years ago as they are considered philosophically/tactically to be among the most influential in the club's history.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/KPcTyMDshD0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/KPcTyMDshD0</a>

That Red Star team from the early 70's was great, but interesting enough, they were not the most dominant Yugoslav team of that time. It was Hajduk Split, managed by Tomislav Ivić, with players like Katalinić, Buljan, Holcer, Peruzović, Jerković, Mužinić, Oblak, Šurjak and Žungul. Now, that was an awesome team ...

I think the Milan-Juve of 2003 takes some beating, but that was a contender for sure.

The derbies between Red Star and Hajduk from the 70's were legendary. I was only 11 when my dad took me to a derby in Belgrade. At the time, "Marakana" was not an all-seater, and there were 95,000 people in the stadium. Luckily, we were in a sitting area. Unforgetable experience  ;D

My opinions of him are hindered by his lazy arse personality whilst coaching the Bosnian national team  ;D But he was a very good player

the future of the former Yugo nations in terms of talent as of late looks quite poor compared to previous years. There are some bright talents here and there, but not quite enough to make a difference overall for the benefit of each country at the international level.

Serbia:

- Vlahovic
- Nikola Milenkovic

Croatia:
- ???

Bosnia:

- Extremely depressing

Slovenia :

- .............

Montenegro:

- .............

Macedonia :

- Peter on RAWK  :D

There are a number of players who are in their mid 20's who could perhaps elevate to the next level [Milenkovic Savic], or just decent overall [brozovic, pasalic, rebic, ] but nothing really that stands out. Particularly in the attacking positions.

Was in our youth team up until recently. Joined FK Sarajevo earlier this year and made his debut in March.

hasn't gotten a callup to the senior national side.

A few years back I was in Split on holiday and it coincided with the Hadjuk v Rijeka match. So I took myself off to it. The Adriatic Derby apparently, though it must be a couple of hundred miles between the two cities down a torturous coastal road as far as I can tell.

The football itself wasn't memorable, Rijeka won 2-0, but the mad bastards on the terraces was a sight to behold. I do remember the tight knot of Rijeka fans unfolding a huge banner with the word 'Armada' written across it, which I was told later is their self appointed 'ultra's' name. That didn't go down well with the locals. Fair to say that the authorities seem to have a fairly relaxed view to the use of pyro, flares and fireworks at a Croatian league match. Quite a spectacle and very intimidating.

Hahaha, always cracked me up, classic yardog footballer. One of my mates at the time bet me money that he would become a better player than Pjanic.

Safe to say I won that bet.

He was released by the Bitters at the start of the month. he had loan spells at Sheffield and Boro in recent years.

I wonder how much money he pocketed for doing absolutely nothing. Everton is a charity, not a football club.

Fucking worse final ever though.

Anybody remember the BBC series 'Football, Fussball, Voetball' in the autumn of 1995 as a precursor to Euro '96? One programme was about Eastern Europe, and the Red Star coach was interviewed - the only way they could win the match, was taking it to penalties. Their away win in Munich was the high point, and after that he knew they had gone 'over the hill' physically. They lost the 2nd leg at home, and only got through thanks to a late unfortunate own goal.

For me, my favourite is Il Genio; Berlusconi's player, but not Capello's. On his day, he was almost unplayable.

No mention of Sinisa Mihaljovic?

Divisive and controversial guy, possibly the best free kick taker of all time. Record number of goals from free kicks in Serie A, only player to score a hat-trick of free kicks in Serie A twice (Beppe Signori did it once) and an interesting guy who’s done alright as a manager.

Great story with Bologna and his fight with cancer too. You can’t excuse some of the things he’s chosen to do and say in his career but he was a top player. Started as a winger before eventually moving back and Sven at Samp converted him to a centre half. He came to Italy as a left winger with Roma.

Classy operator.

Sinisa Mihajlovic's autobiography is an excellent read for anyone who is interested in the history of football during the Balkan conflict and the fall of the Yugoslavian national team.

He says the biggest regret of his career was not being part of the 1987 U20 World Cup Winning Yugoslavian side. They had Jarni, Stimac, Boban, Prosinecki, Mijatovic and Suker. Sinisa was probably that bit too young, only just 18 at the time (though they did have other 18 year olds) and he was playing lower league Croatian football, although being trialled by Zagreb. Dinamo Zagreb ummed and erred about signing him permanently - he was included in a provision U20 squad, then when Dinamo decided not to go for him, he was dropped from the squad.

He then spent three years playing alongside Sheffield Utd's Jokanovic for Vojvodina who were usually midtable also-rans, but they went on to win the Yugoslavian league title against all expectations. Sinisa then moved on to Italy, the rest is history.
