It will Terry and one thing that i've always wondered about if people from the 6 counties could vote in a 32 election would SF & the DUP still control the voting powerbase that they have. We have gone through a financial disater and the ruling Party FF go up in the polls, mindblowing or is it the fact that the coalition of FG/Lab just aint cutting it. Interesting indeed.

FF are trying to set up in the six counties.i think their problem is they don't know who to court. They are looking at the dead in the water SDLP but then they are exactly that, dead in the water. there is some movement towards courting the SF voters who only vote for them because they aren't the dead in the water SDLP but thate the fact that they are voting for sinn fein. but the movement is definately on and would be great for NI politics if FF and even the conservatives from UK moved in to break up the usual faces.. By the way did i mention that the SDLP are dead in the water?

The only one in Dail Eireann who speaks any sense is Aurthur Morgan.

A good bloke him.

Things definately need a shake up in the north. The UUP are every bit as dead in the water as the SDLP.

The Conservatives won't be setting up in NI as they have some agreement with the UUP to work together so thats a no go.

But the DUP and SF have got it far too easy and they have no real challengers. No easy solution to that one and the Alliance are seen as 'weak' by all and sundry.

Sarge, no option for 'dont vote'?

Thats the option I'd select. I, like most lads my age, I know, dont vote.

We grew up in Nationalist/Republican areas of Derry. Growing up, I was interested in politics, enjoyed politics. I was interested in both sides of the argumument. I was open minded......despite my upbringing and all the influences that a teenage lad faces growing up in republican areas.

There is now real 'middle ground' in NI politics. No realistic alternative. Your either one side or the other. That fucks me off. Especially because the 'side' I'm expected to lean towards (Sinn Fein/SDLP) do nothing to inspire me to vote.

When I was 16, after a few run ins with our community defenders (Sinn Fein/PIRA/Vigilantes), out of spite, I promised myself I would vote Womens Coalition or some other nonsensical party.

Whilst I still keep a keen eye on our local politics and politics of the north, there has not been a party or a cause that I have felt the need to vote for.

When I talk to my da/ma, they grew up at a time where their vote was a big deal. "People died so you could vote" almost guilt tripping me into it.

The only thing I like about the elections are the memories they bring back. Making crate loads of petrol bombs and paint bombs. Good times. Idiotic now I think about it, especially how, with a bit of maturity my views on the world have changed.

red, its painfully similar to an extent in the south...

you are expected to vote sinn fein/sdlp, and so a huge amount of people vote "republican" because thats what they do...
in the south here, the parties are 1 step short of football teams, they have their supporters, they vote for one party because thats what the do. nothing to do with which is the better side, or who has the best potential to bring forth a better society / prosperity..

I know a lot of people (generally plus 50) that vote FF only, have done all their lives, and will continue to do so..

Rednich85, I'm not trying to be smart (and I don't know much about them), but what about the Alliance Party? Aren't they a relatively centrist group, or is the problem that their actual politics is hopeless?

People are entitled not to vote, if that is how they wish, but I think that there's always an option. I'm elgible to vote in USA too, and despite not feeling close to either party's ideologies in the last election, I just voted for one of the smaller candidated. I suppose many would consider this throwing a vote away, but I feel differently.
