Caldies - The Calderstones Park Thread
« on: February 26, 2009, 08:05:00 pm »
This is the only thread I could find regarding Calderstones Park.

Fascinating to see a Mandarin Duck patrolling the lake this evening. Obviously cock of the ducks as well because it had a right nibble at a Mallard for getting in its way.

(not actual pics of the 1 in the park)

Quality, my uncle was telling me last night about this funky looking duck he had seen in Caldies earlier this week. Might head up at the weekend to see if its still there.

It's quite exquisite. My daughter was on her bike and I was running behind her and glanced toward the lake and this duck stood out from 30 yards. We doubled back to where the pigeons are usually fed and it was buzzzing away feeding. I know the councils Park's manager and he thinks there might have been one there in the 90's but this one has deffo been there a few years.

So its if mum duck conceded here, its a scouse Mandarin hybrid. That explains why it butted a Mallard that went for its bread. Ok it didn't butt it, but it pecked the fucked out of it.

VdM - can we change the title to Caldertones Park now. Its unlikely that anyone will want it preserved as a Power Plant thread, although the backround is here anyway.

double edit here: I know Caldies like the back of me scrotum and I haven't seen one of these ever. Its a must to get down there to see it.

Caldies is immense.

Has the ditch by the cafe got smaller though over the last 10 or so years? It was at least 20 foot deep when I was a kid ;D

I have fond memeories of Caldies. I used to support an autsistic lad who used to work for Glendales there.  I used to sit on a bench in the summer watching him work.

Went up with the kids last Sunday and went running through the park throughout the week to get another glimpse of the mad duck but there's been no sign.

I know the Parks & Environment Manager and he confirms that the Mandarin has been there for years (rumours since the 1990's). He Suggests that there obviously must be a females around so there must be a "scouse Mandarin hybrid on the scene".

It was last February that I spotted the Mandarin duck in Caldies lake so it may be back now, haven't had the chance to go up lately. Might try later and let you know if its there.

Was night fishing in there about 1985 - saw a lad get battered by about a gang of 15 lads.

I spent most minutes of my youth in Sefton Pk mate, fishing, football, etc. So many fond memories.

It was/is a great park, but Caldies is superior imo.

The grass is so much better for footy in Caldies, like playing on a bowling green. Ace in the summer with your mates and a few tinnies. Parts of the turf in Sevvy are like mudbaths.

This is true. Our school had its x-country course in Sevvy - was like running through a mudbath at times, was really grateful to get back on the paths.........footy in Sevvy was horrific - those fields by the Angel Dell.......

Caldies is a much better park in that regard - amazing grass - also played baseball there every Sunday back in the day......huge open spaces that would probably look about as small as me back garden these days - much like that ditch wouldn't look anywhere near as deep now - oh and a packet of crisps would last all day, mars bars were bigger and I'm also fairly certain that Special Brew was stronger......

There's something about the grass in the entire area. The grass in the park and the grass in my garden when I first moved in round here (and in my sisters nearby) seems to be very slow growing and flatter, if that makes sense.

I've patched mine up so many times after the kids playing footy it grows like fuck now.

Disgusting. From the nostalgic stories that come from older family/friends, you would never believe there were these horrible bastards around 20 years ago. I've heard a few stories from when I was a bit younger about lads (and girls for that matter) getting jumped in there, just wish extra funding was available to maybe deter it.. But of course, the leafy lanes of Allerton sees no such yobbish behaviour.

Isn't Sevvie nearer and cheaper than Southport? Thought that was where the scumbag element hung out, now that Lark Lane's gone down the pan and the caves are closed........but then again they reopened the palmhouse so it's all posh again innit............but the Angel Dell looks like a dried up puddle...........I'm so confused........

Sevvie is nearer for some of them but others have audacity to travel from north Liverpool when they have Stanley Pk on their doorstep. Sevvie is getting a posh new boat house soon which looks cool.....I may risk a trip down there in the summer.

Tonight there was a very unusual black Mallard with a white markings on its neck in Caldies lake. Not to be confused with the many Coots that have appeared (with white foreheads) or the smaller Moorhen with a red beak. This was partnering another duck, same shape size and "ducking methods" with its arse in the air.

Might take a camera tomorrow.

Cracking pic that mate, I used to work in the Mansion House and often stood just by those windows.

I took a couple of pics of Caldies last night but I can't compress them sufficiently to post on here. I wanted to show you experts where a good place is for a snap so you could get up there with a better camera than I have.
