Yep, my view on suitcases has always been only to pay an amount such that I wouldn't care if it was damaged by baggage staff or, even, if I had to leave it behind.

I've only ever paid a few quid for general suitcases. From charity shops on occasion.

However there are some interesting niche cases that are worth paying a bit more for. For example, when I go on expeditions I take a cabin size bag that has wheels and is pull along, but also has straps, so it can be worn as a backpack. Pull it along at the airport and on smooth routes, pavements etc; wear it over rough ground.

If you have such a specialist need, it's worth getting the right sort.

Can anyone recommend the best place for booking Villa/w.flights packages?

Tired of charging around, just want to sit by a (private) pool for a fortnight.  ;D

I looked at some of those individual (book with the owner) sites, but might prefer the ATOS security of going via an agent.

Being a bargain-hunting obsessive, I drove myself half mad trying to get a villa and flights for what I considered a great price last summer hols. In the end, I just went with VillaPlus. They seemed to have the best combination of the best villas and price. And secured, all done.

A Tory, a worker and an immigrant are sat round a table. There's a plate of 10 biscuits in the middle. The Tory takes 9 then turns to the worker and says "that immigrant is trying to steal your biscuit"

Yeah, that was my problem. Thanks for the tip!

Dubai: Daughter of Facebook 'horse' insult woman makes plea

The daughter of a British woman who is facing prison in Dubai for calling her ex-husband's new wife a "horse" on Facebook has pleaded for her release.

Laleh Shahravesh, 55, was arrested at Dubai airport after flying to the city to attend her ex-husband's funeral.

Her daughter, Paris, has written to Dubai's ruler saying she has not seen her mother in more than three weeks.

"I ask kindly: please, please return my mother's passport, and let her come home," said the 14-year-old.

The Foreign Office said it was supporting mother-of-one Ms Shahravesh.

Ms Shahravesh, from Richmond in south-west London, was married to her Portuguese husband Pedro for 18 years, according to campaign group Detained in Dubai which is working to get her released.

The couple lived together in Dubai for eight months - where Pedro worked for HSBC - before Ms Shahravesh returned alone to the UK with the couple's daughter.

Spoiler
In 2016, she received divorce papers and discovered on Facebook that Pedro was remarrying.

Writing in Farsi on Facebook, Ms Shahravesh said: "I hope you go under the ground you idiot. Damn you. You left me for this horse." In another post, she wrote: "You married a horse you idiot."

Ms Shahravesh was arrested in Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), on 10 March after travelling there for Pedro's funeral following his death from a heart attack at the age of 51.

Under the UAE's cyber-crime laws, a person can be jailed or fined for making defamatory statements on social media.

Detained in Dubai said Ms Shahravesh could be sentenced to up to two years in prison or fined £50,000, despite the fact she wrote the social media posts while in the UK. The organisation said Ms Shahravesh's ex-husband's new wife, who lives in Dubai, had reported the comments.

'Sick in my stomach'

On Monday, an open letter was published online from the couple's daughter, Paris Shahravesh Correia Dos Santos, to the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the ruler of Dubai.

She claimed that police shouted at her crying mother, who she said was "given no choice" but to sign a document that she did not understand.

Paris said: "I cannot emphasise enough how scared I felt, especially after losing my father just a week before, as I was having to worry about losing my mother as well.

"Yet even though I felt terrified on the day that we arrived, the sick feeling in my stomach only became worse."

She added: "I have not seen my mother in 23 days, and with every passing day, I feel less hopeful of her return."

'Considering retracting statement'

The chief executive of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, said the complainant has since written on Facebook that she is considering dropping the charges and retracting her statement out of respect for Paris.

Earlier, Ms Stirling told BBC News that both her organisation and the Foreign Office (FCO) had asked the complainant to withdraw the allegation, but she had refused.

According to Ms Stirling, her client Ms Shahravesh had been bailed but her passport had been confiscated and she was currently living in a hotel.

Ms Stirling added that "no-one would really be aware" of the severity of cyber-crime laws in the UAE, and the FCO had failed to adequately warn tourists about them.

The FCO said in a statement: "Our staff are supporting a British woman and her family following her detention in the UAE.

"We are in contact with the UAE authorities regarding her case."

Meanwhile during a trip to meet EU leaders in Luxembourg, Foreign Secretary Jeremy C*nt told reporters that the government was "concerned" by the situation.

"Our diplomats in the UAE have enormous experience in dealing with consular cases as we saw from the Matthew Hedges case and so she is getting the best possible service from the FCO," he said.

Durham University PhD student Mr Hedges was pardoned last year after intense diplomatic pressure. He had previously been accused of spying for the UK and jailed for life in an Abu Dhabi court.

Ms Shahravesh faces further court proceedings on Thursday. She said: "I am terrified. I can't sleep or eat. I have gone down two dress sizes because of the stress.

"And my daughter cries herself to sleep every night. We are so close, especially since her father left us and we only have each other. It breaks my heart to be kept apart from her."

She has previously spoken about her Facebook comments, saying: "I reacted badly. I lashed out and wrote two unpleasant comments about his new wife on his Facebook page."

I understand your point, and it's certainly a very authoritarian regime there. But then there are similarly outrageous things happening all over the globe. To boycott all such places would close half the world off to me, and I want to see as much of the world as possible in my short life.

I regard the world as a place to be explored in whatever time I have on the planet. I can't legislate for the nature of regimes and laws and attitudes in different parts of the world; I can't afford to wait a lifetime in the hope that things might change in various places, to be more in line with my views. I have to hold my nose, grit my teeth and visit such places in spite of whatever is disreputable about them.

I find it's important to separate the world itself, this planet we have been given, the very land and the spaces themselves, from the nasties that temporarily hold sway in various parts of it.

EDIT: just to add, that wherever you find extreme and authoritarian governments, the people who have to live there all the time, the ordinary citizens, are usually those who suffer most under the regimes. The ordinary people of the world are my brothers and sisters in humanity, and I'm not going to let any c*nts in charge stop me from meeting them and forming friendships and spending time with them.

And now back to favourite suitcases, and stuff

Not as strict as Dubai, but we need something like this in the UK - there are racist tweets to footballers going back 5 years that are still on twitter - social media is used to throw some vile insults about. Maybe if there were harsh punishments, people would think twice.

I get what Ghost Town is saying - I've visited a number of countries where I can be arrested just for being me. I obviously disagree with their laws, and have to take care when I'm there. But I am curious about the world and its people, so I don't let government policy, culture or plain old bigotry stop me. Having said that, I wouldn't bother with Dubai again. I've been for work a couple of times. It's completely soulless and there's very little to see there that you can't find in other parts of the world (in terms of culture etc).

In other news, I'm off to Iraqi Kurdistan later this week.

Hope they let you back in! The Yanks might also take issue with you in future. A couple of people I know who have been there find it impossible to get ESTAs. It's the one thing that has stopped me going to that region. But eventually I hope to.

Good luck anyway. I'm envious!

Calling the other woman a horse falls under their laws about making defamatory statements on social media, what she called her is of no consequence, it is the law it falls under that matters and her statement is illegal. There is uproar about her being arrested for doing something illegal in Dubai, yet there is hardly a peep in the UK about all those breaking the law every day in the UK making racist comments. Typical media reaction in the UK, big headlines of this woman calling her a horse, hardly mentioning it is illegal, yet quiet about people being called n*****r and other vile shite over here.

She didn't do it whilst in Dubai (try reading the article) and you're back to racism again.

People should know before even thinking about heading to that part of the world that they can and do arrest people for nothing, just the word of a single resident is enough to see you jailed, they even arrest people who smell of alcohol in arrivals even though it is their fucking flight attendants who sold said alcohol.

Has anyone ever done a long weekend in Croatia? Or 3/4 nights?

Looking for a short European City break at the end of the season (have already done Madrid!) and thinking about somewhere new/different. Croatia looks amazing - looking at somewhere like Hvar.

Just interested in a few days in a nicer climate (not interested in beaches or lying by a pool for hours), somewhere beautiful where we can walk around and see some sights, nice restaurants, bars etc...

Considering Lisbon too.

Not been to Hvar but both Split and Dubrovnik would be perfect for a short break.

But then again Lisbon is gorgeous too so... ;D

It's gorgeous, I must go back again actually!

It's quite small, but if you run out of things to do, there's a few islands close by you can visit - we went to Mljet, which is a national park and absolutely stunning.

We found Fuerteventura decent value.

Try https://www2.sunshine.co.uk/hotel_searches/show/1764817335
We stayed here (2 adults, 2 kids) and it was perfectly fine. Big rooms, OK food, two big pools (although saltwater).

Edit: the price shown on the link is just for the hotel in mid-Aug. Flights can be got for about £250pp.

That'd come to about £2k

We fly out a week Wednesday, going to check out the best place to watch the CL Final, looking at Millers Ale House as the most likely, as the kids loved being in there last time.

3 weeks today its off to Antigua to a brand new AI resort.  Goodbye work and hello sun and relaxation.  I cant wait

It only opened 2 weeks ago and I have initially been reading some horror stories.  Looks like its getting better every day though and should be good when we go.

Got it at a really good price due to it being new so can't complain if there are a few issues.  On the whole though, people say the place is beautiful and the food is good.  That'll do for me.

(Off to Madrid a few days before we go so can't totally focus on Antigua atm :))

Been to new hotels twice previously, and as long as you accept there might be some teething problems and that you may have to put up with the odd thing then it's really not too bad.

The good thing is most of the staff are extra happy to please and if there are issues they tend to bend over backwards to fix them.

Just booked two weeks in Cuba. Plan to hire a car and explore from Varadero westwards. Any tips? Rough plan at the moment is Havana-Vinales-Trinidad-Cienfuegos-Jibacoa.

Heading to Spain, near Malaga, at the end of July with my other half and my 1.5 year old daughter. Looking forward to it but well aware it might be too hot for the little one.

Any tips for travelling with kids is welcome! My first time...

If she is still in them, then take plenty of nappies, they are sodding expensive in Spain.

Take loads of stuff to keep her entertained on the plane, including food and drinks. Ignore any tut tut old twats when you walk on with a kid, you've as much right to be there as them.

If she has a teddy she takes with her, DO NOT let it out of your sight - apparently it was MY fault we left my lads teddy in the taxi from the airport in Lanzarote when he was 16 months old. Nightmare getting him settled with a new one.

We never used one, but those UV tents look really good. Make sure you coat her in factor 50 and keep topping up.

Take her in the pool, its ace swimming with your kids.

The Spanish love kids, so you will be welcome everywhere

All you want really - Pub Street, loads and loads of restaurants - and depending on how much of the Angkor site you want to see - enough to take up three days. We asked the hotel we stayed in to organize the guide for us and we kept the same chap for 2 days - ATMs and restaurants work in U.S. dollars.
It's worth getting up early to see the sunrise - seems a drag after too much ale and happy pizza but it is a really incredible spectacle. Cambodian food like amok is really great too.

Yeah Angkor is a must. Only negative is fitting everything in three days.
