Saw this on Facebook yesterday and now see this is where people will be landing....

Feel sorry for people getting married at st Georges hall and seeing people screaming overhead.

Also just seeing the skyline during the winter with dangling wires across lime street

I enjoyed the one running down Church Street a few years ago but least you knew that one was only there for a Summer

Despite some vocal opposition, I think half of the city will have a go on it.

I think I'd definitely need one if going off that height. I think the beacon is around 420ft, isn't it?  :o

Mind you, Mrs S and I were thinking of doing the one over Penrhyn slate Quarry in North Wales next time we are nearby.  https://www.zipworld.co.uk/adventure/velocity

I can see where that comes from. I did the zip line down Church Street/Lord street years ago when it was there.

The difference with that one is that it didn't dominate the skyline (wasn't above the height of those shops) and more importantly it was temporary.

I just think there are better places in the city to put it

Just as that area of the city got rid of the flyover, and created a nicer view of the city in general, the council manage to throw a spanner in the works, and you can see divs scudding across the sky, screaming their heads off.

The only problem with designating Concert Square as the Official Gobshite Zone is that they can easily spill over into the al fresco dining area in Blld Street.

A real culture clash.

Looks like Liverpool BID are using the Echo as their own personal propaganda machine. 100+ businesses have signed a letter in support of the zip line including the majority of stalls inside St Johns and those likely to reap the benefits of a load extra tourists looking for a good time

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/more-100-businesses-give-backing-18679586

A few stand outs

Jonny Lacey, Bongo's Bingo
Chris Devaney, RLB360 (Liver building tour)
Madie Outaaraft, Bakchich, Bold Street
Amine El Gueddar, Kasbah, Bold Street
Paolo Cillo, Il Forno, Duke Street
Terry Stockton, Hippy Chick, Baltic Market
John Sinclair, Peaky Blinders
Christian Boyle, Bar 54
Hussain Etaaat, Shiraz, Williamson Square
Mark Ellison, Johnny English Fish & Chips, Bold Street
Mark O`Leary, Rebel Barbers, Bold Street
Melissa Newness, The Vines
Steve Smith, The Dispensary
Jay Baker, Down The Hatch
Jimmy Boland, Rubber Soul
Dean McClafferty, Irish House
Darren Smith, Ruby Blues
Sean Traynor, Celtic Corner
James Brackley, Einstein
Jo Pringle, Lago
Sam Harris, Sgt Peppers

Obviously The Echo haven't posted links to the petitions opposing the plans.

Really really tacky idea this reducing the city from a place of towering heritage to an Alton Towers.

The 'businesses' that all say 'yeh it'll make more money for the city and more jobs for the next 10 years' - erm, exactly how many jobs will t create? And will those employees be Liverpudlians?

And where are the profits of this awful idea going? Right back into the city? Or back into Cheshire where we know the bosses will all live.

And how much would we actually lose as a city if we lost any Heritage funding? Would this zip wire replace that funding and even increase it? I doubt it.

There's a place for a zip wire in Liverpool possibly somewhere quite over the Mersey but not through the city so some one-timers can have a 'thrill' for 2 minutes.

Horrible scheme, especially where it ends.

They have been turning the city into a blackpool style hen/stag do destination for years. This is just another associated piece of bullshit.

I don't really buy this 'stag and hen' destination thing. I've gone to plenty of UK cities over the last decade and they're all doing the same to attract visitors. I wouldn't say it's any worse or better than most other places.

So in principle I don't mind something like this, however I'm not sure this is the place for it. You'd be better having one for a few months of the year somewhere else, maybe Pier Head or the like.

Not really, loads of options around pier head way. One side of museum over a few docks towards Albert Dock for example wouldn’t be a bad view and prob wouldn’t interrupt anywhere sound wise.

I was going to suggest Craig's flat, but then I remembered that the windows don't open wide enough.  ;)

I’d gladly allow it if the fuckers open my windows some more.

The ones they built in Wales have had a massive positive impact on local tourism due to people staying in local accommodation and spending local! even though the owners are probably very wealthy right now, it has brought a lot of money to the area too, and they employ locals! the only negative is they are seasonal i imagine the one in liverpool would be open most the year?

Where in Wales?

We are talking about Liverpool a city known world wide, with culture, with history, with famous historic buildings, with a famous port, with 2 cathedrals and their impact of faith and culture, with Europe's oldest China town, with The Biggest band of all time, and with a great football club supported all over the world.

I don't think we can compare really.

And don't get me wrong - Wales is a stunning country, but if I was walking in its beautiful landscapes then I WOULD NOT want some screaming fucker whizzing by me.

Tbf those are all valid points, but he was replying to different points you made previously about employment, etc. so a tad unfair to then shift the argument.

His points are pretty valid. The one in Wales is a massive tourist attraction and does bring people to the area. As will this one. Which in turn increases sales in the local shops, meals bought in local restaurants, drinks downed in local bars, and beds slept in in local hotels - a lot of which are locally owned and employ local people.

So my personal issue isn’t that Liverpool will be the location of this, but more of where abouts in Liverpool it’s being put. There are loads of places imo it could go where it would be better suited.

The ones in Wales (the same as other zipline places like Go Ape) are all either in forests or quarrys. This will be the 1st permanent 'urban' location for a zipline anywhere in the UK.

The one thing Liverpool had a massive problem with in the past was the 1st impression for tourists. If you're flying in then you're at John Lennon which is a fair distance away from the city. If you are driving you have to pass through Edge lane and horrible roadworks and if you are getting the train you have to exit Lime street to what was a load of buildings blocking St Georges hall. None of those scream 'Welcome to Liverpool'

So much was done post Capital of Culture to improve all of that and in the past few years it has been much better. You walk out of Lime street you are greeted with that lovely view of the Hall and St Johns and once the roads outside there get reconfigured , it will be even more welcoming.

That zipline will take up the skyline from St Johns all the way past St Georges hall and onto the central library (which is a landmark in itself). It becomes a focal point for the view you see from Lime street.

I think there are much better places. The Albert dock, The Echo Arena, Even Anfield or Goodison would be better.

Where in Wales?
Penrhyn Quarry.  Only know this because I watched some fella walk some old railway lines on Channel 5 and he did it.

Quarry is still active, btw.

Last time I went there I saw masturbating chimpanzees. Whether you think that's worthy of £22 is up to you. All I'll say is I now have an annual pass.
