RAWK Adonis aka Fitness Thread...
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:47:53 am »
Yes, I know fitness and the boozer go as well as chips and custard, but I'm sure I can't be the only person who embarks on a bit of a last-minute summmer fitness kick around this time of year?

Thought a thread for likeminded rawkites to share what they're doing training-wise, exercise tips, *whispers* healthy eating alternatives and such might be useful, as well as providing a bit of comic relief for the less active boozers to hi-jack with pictures of triple chocolate fudge cakes!

If you're interested, post what you're aiming for etc otherwise let this thread sink like a man going swimming after eating 12 pizzas and I'll get back to surfing LEGO websites  :wave

at the moment I train 4 times a week, and play football twice a week.

That way, I can eat and drink pretty much what I like and still be fine :D

I train 2 nights a week for soccer. Play sundays.

Plus i'm generally an active person. Have a lot of excess energy to burn. Some people may call that hyper.

Play footie twice a week, then do three or four one hour fitness sessions in the rest of the week.  Don't do weights or anything because I don't really enjoy it and I'm not arsed if my forearms resemble white twiglets.

I'm just trying to get fitter and lose a little bit of weight of my belly after Tony called me fat before the Juve match.  Cock.

For eating I have tried to drink more Pils than normal lagers and turn to the spirits earlier than before.  Not great for my liver, but slightly less calories.  I'm doing my best to eat as much fruit as possible and as little chocolate/crisps/kebabs, the latter despite being assured by some Turkish guys over here that kebabs are healthy.

I 've always gymmed once or twice a week, but when you drink all over the place you don't lose any extra weight, just stay the same.
So for the last month or so I have put some extra effort in summertime-wise (just for the laydeez).

Gym every morning 6.30am till 8.15.
40 minute walk to work (and back)
Twice a week I go in the nights for 2 hours as well.
Don't drink in the weeks.
Cut down from Fri/Sat/Sun benders to and easy Friday, bender Saturday, dry Sunday (if there aint a match)
Eat sensibly (and only have ONE tea, not four)

Once I'm at a decent weight then I can go back to drinking all over the place with a moderate exercise routine and stay that way.

Agreed, but you don't have to go for the rabbit food to be healthy. I.e. get some wholewheat pittas, chopped salad, some grilled chicken and a dash of lemon et voila! A wholesome kebab! (spilled box of chips and angry kebab house owner optional)

I did a marathon last year, but got injured around Christmas so slowly getting back into running again. Doing a 10k in three weeks then aiming for another marathon later this year - can anyone recommend a fun gym class to keep things interesting? Enjoy running but sometimes it is nice to break the monotony!

Non-doner Kebabs aint bad - lean grilled meat with salad and a pitta... Which is fortunate as I hate (the elephant leg-style) doner with a passion..

Anyhoo... Exercise is well good for you an all that, but in terms of losing weight and keeping it off, it's surprisingly crap unless you do inhuman amounts as Col is approaching ;) Much better is to reduce calorie intake per day (exercise burns off shockingly few calories) and the best way to do that is this http://www.gidiet.com/en-gb/

None of that Atkins bullshit, which is pretty dangerous in the mid- to long-term and you put on weight well fast when you come off it... The G.I. diet is basically all about eating unprocessed foods, and less meat and carbs (but not that much less), especially sugar. Cos it's all unprocessed, your body expends plenty of energy breaking it up, and there's less sugar and therefore less energy in the food... Only diet I've done where I didn't ever feel particularly hungry (stuff like porridge at brekky really sorts you out for the day, but you HAVE to eat fruit at 11 and lunch too). The hardest thing was to get used to the veg overload (and v. little bread / cheese), but give it a week and you're loving the taste of all these different fruit and veg (apples are the sweetest things you'll ever taste) and stuff like sweets and crisps are totally unnappealing... This was well weird, seeing that I was a snacker-extraordinaire before.

In the books, the fella reckons you shouldn't drink hardly at all, but I fucked that one off immediately... drank about 3 nights a week, did this GI diet for a month (and the good thing is it'll still have its effect if you only do it 90% of the time, so kebabs and the odd choccy bar are OK) and lost 1 1/2 stone.

OK so then I lost my job and went on the piss / junkfood again, but once I motivate myself again, that's the diet I'll be doin'..

Mate of mine did it and went from 17 stone to 11 1/2 stone in 4 months... and has stayed there despite doing the GI stuff about 50% of the time now (but regularly exercising, which is easier anyway if you're not a fatboy  :D )

Take small steps today!

1. Walk to work.

2. Use skimmed milk instead of whole milk.

3. Do sit-ups in front of the TV.

4. Walk during your lunch hour.

5. Drink a glass of water before a meal.

6. Choose leaner cuts of red meat & poultry.

7. Eat only half your dessert – save the rest for tomorrow night!

8. Walk instead of driving whenever you can.

9. Take a family stroll after dinner.

10. Avoid food portions larger than your fist.

11. Choose olive margarine instead of butter.

12. Mow your lawn with a push mower.

13. Increase the fibre in your diet.

14. Aim for at least 5 servings of fruit and veg every day.

15. Walk the kids to school.

16. Get a dog and walk it.

17. Join an exercise group.

18. Change to diet fizzy drinks.

19. Replace Sunday drive with Sunday walk.

20. Garden!

21. Eat from a smaller plate to help control portion size.

22. Get off the bus a stop early and walk.

23. Don't eat late at night.

24. Skip seconds.

25. Work around the house.

26. Skip buffets and all-you-can-eat offers.

27. Grill, steam or bake instead of frying.

28. Cycle to the shops instead of driving.

30. Ask your doctor about taking a multi-vitamin.

31. Go for a half-hour walk instead of watching TV.

32. Use vegetable oils over solid fats.

33. More carrots, less cake!

34. Fetch the newspaper yourself.

35. Sit up straight at work.

36. Wash the car by hand.

37. Don't skip meals.

38. Swap potato crisps for celery sticks.

39. Run when running errands.

40. Pace the sidelines at sports games.

41. Take wheels off luggage.

42. Choose an activity that fits into your everyday life.

43. Use the car parking space furthest from your destination (when safe).

44. Ask a friend to exercise with you.

45. Make time in your day for physical activity.

46. Use an exercise video if the weather is bad.

47. Switch from white bread to wholegrain.

48. Keep to a regular eating routine.

49. If you find it difficult to exercise after work, exercise before work.

50. Take a walk or do desk exercises instead of a coffee break.

52. Avoid labour-saving devices.

53. Take small trips on foot to get your body moving.

54. Play active games with your kids for 30 minutes a day.

55. Dance!

56. Keep a pair of comfortable walking or running shoes in your car and office.

57. Make a Saturday morning walk a group habit.

58. Walk briskly around the shopping centre.

59. Choose activities you enjoy and you'll be more likely to stick with them.

60. Stretch before bed to give you more energy when you wake.

61. Take the long way to the water cooler.

62. Explore new physical activities.

63. Vary your activities, for interest and to broaden the range of benefits.

64. Think of yourself as a healthy person and healthy habits will become second nature.

65. Choose fruit or yoghurt for dessert.

66. Consume alcohol in moderation, if at all.

67. Take stairs instead of the escalator.

68. Conduct an inventory of your eating and activity patterns.

69. Share a main course with a friend.

70. Grill vegetables instead of roasting in oil.

71. Eat before grocery shopping.

72. Choose a checkout line without a chocolate display.

73. Make a grocery list before you shop.

74. Buy 100% fruit juices instead of fizzy or sugary drinks.

75. Swim with your kids.

76. Flavour foods with herbs, spices and other low-fat seasonings.

77. Remove skin from poultry before cooking to lower fat content.

78. Eat before you get too hungry.

79. Don't skip breakfast.

80. Stop eating when you are full.

81. Snack on fruit and vegetables, not crisps and chocolate.

82. Top your favourite cereal with apples or bananas.

83. Try brown rice or whole-wheat pasta.

84. Include several servings of whole grain food daily.

85. When eating out, choose a small or medium portion.

86. If main dishes are too big, choose an appetizer or a side dish instead.

87. Ask for salad dressing "on the side".

88. Don't take seconds.

89. Try your burger with just lettuce, tomato and onion – forget the bacon and cheese.

90. Try a green salad instead of fries.

91. Bake or grill fish.

92. Walk instead of sitting around.

93. Eat sweet foods in small amounts, if at all.

94. Take your dog on longer walks.

95. Drink lots of water.

96. Cut back on added fats or oils in cooking or spreads.

97. Stay active on holiday - walk the beach instead of sunbathing.

98. Walk to a co-worker's desk instead of emailing or calling them.

99. Carry your groceries instead of pushing a trolley.

100. Reward and acknowledge your efforts.

I go to the gym about three times a week to do weights and have been meaning, for months, to go a fourth day and do cardio work but never get round to it. Will be going sober this summer to save money and to get my body into a healthier state. Have also been eating much more pasta and tuna recently. Just need to start on the fruit now :P

I try to do a 10k run as many times a week as possible.  Sometimes more than once a day.

(jog 10 steps, stop and say "K! I'm done!")

I run 4 or 5 times a week and will be increasing that to running 5 times and cycling 40k on a Friday one week and running 6 times a week the next.
