Reckon he's getting time and a half?

that is an outrageous picture of that poor driver

I wonder if he got quarantined also or if he just knocks off at the end of the journey, has a fag leaning against the side of the bus, then drives back home to his wife and kids

Apparently they volunteered and will self quarantine at home for 14 days (and be paid for it).

What Carra had confirmed ahead of the Echo reports about why Arrowe Park was chosen.

https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/health-secretary-explains-role-liverpool-17687780

Quote
As previously reported by the ECHO, the Health Secretary confirmed that the Wirral location had been chosen because of the availability of the NHS accommodation and because of its close proximity to the Royal Liverpool Hospital, where there is a specialist infectious diseases unit.

Quote
Speaking afterwards, Ms [Maria] Eagle made the point that the existing Royal building is crumbling and should have been closed down three years ago - with the replacement hospital still years away because of the faults of government-appointed contractor Carillion.

She said: "It’s ironic that the Minister recognises the world class work carried out by staff at the Royal and has swiftly put our hospital on the front line of the Coronavirus response given how slow the Government have been when it comes to saving our new Royal hospital building from the mess  of the Carrillion collapse.”

Yes this is more worrying than the flu for a few reasons

1. It's new, we have no immunity to it
2. VERY transmissible. Looks like it can be infectious pre, during and post symptoms. One person infects 4 others on average (in Wuhan anyway) and it may be able to survive on surfaces without a host for 5 days.
3. High chance of pneumonia or other complications (20% is what I've heard) even higher if elderly, with pre-existing conditions or a weakened immune system.
4. Mortality rate (as far as we know) is 2/3%, although China may be underreporting this given reports/videos from people in Wuhan. It's lower than SARS but given the transmissibility has the potential to kill many more people.

If it gets out of control over here then there will be a lot of people requiring oxygen, and the NHS won't be able to treat everyone. It remains to be seen if China have responded fast enough with their quarantine efforts.

I've seen 492 and just under 24k infected.

Worth remembering/considering with this live data that the currently reported deaths figure will tend to be quite close to the actual number (some reports will be late), while the latter figure will be a vast underestimate (will tend to be exponentially higher number of cases once more is learned).

All reported deaths so far in China bar one in Hong Kong and one in Phillipines

Surely the number of deaths is more likely to be correct than the number infected, so the mortality rate is likely to be lower?

Both figures are underestimates, but yes given the difficulty in diagnoses (and timeliness of them) for viruses (including influenza too) - and the greater certainty in knowing whether someone is dead or not - that is logical

I doubt it. The UK isn't China with all due respect to them, and nations around the world are preparing for a worst case scenario as we speak. Extreme measures will be taken if they have to be. The reason we're here in the first place is because China fucked about for weeks before realizing how serious it actually was. I do business with a major distributor of medical masks and gloves in the US. They are enforcing strict monitoring of orders of such products. Anyone ordering above their norm is having their orders rejected. The distributors are trying to ensure that their regular customers (clinics, dentists, hospitals, etc) keep getting their normal supply.

In the earlier days of this saga, some customers were buying thousands of boxes instead of their usual orders of a few dozen. It caused backorders. Heard a story from an inside source that a Chinese-American citizen tried to buy $100,000 worth of masks and was going to ship them to relatives and friends in China. The order was rejected.

The sad irony is that the US companies (European too I assume), in order to save costs, have a large portion of their gloves manufactured in China. Makes you wonder if those supply agreements will stay intact if things worsen.
