But it's overpriced, Sony sucks, no games, crap games, I don't want a media player blah blah blah.  ;D ;D ;D

Always said that the PS3 was a bargain at it's original price, now it's just a steal. I might even get meself one soon.

Exactly. Been banging on about what a good deal it was since it came out, but they refused to be convinced. But to be fair when i did break down the costs (i.e. if you inc the HD-DVD drive, wireless adapter, online gaming costs, and eventually coders will get hang of the ps3 and games will improve...etc) some of them did say "true"

News just came down that Warner has decided to go with BluRay - they currently do 20% of DVD sales in the USA.

A huge step towards victory for BluRay.

Director Michael Bay posted this message on the Official Michael Bay forums:

"Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day"

 ???

I was wondering about all these films coming out on Blu Ray... how many of them would actually have been shot in HD? (I assumer the likes of BladeRunner have been upscaled?)

They were shot in film, which is much higher definition than e.g. Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Think about going to the cinema back in the 80s, and the fact that even on a 100 foot screen there was no pixellation...

With regrards upscaling in general, I've got a fairly expensive Bravia TV, and my PS3 can upscale normal DVDs to the TV better than the award-winning TV can do it for itself.

Paramount to drop HD-Dvd?

TOKYO (Reuters) - Paramount studios is poised to drop its support of the high-definition DVD (HD DVD) format after Warner Bros studio said it would back the competing Blu-ray format, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The loss of support from Paramount, which is owned by Viacom, would likely deal the final blow to the HD DVD format backed by Toshiba and put an end to the format war, the newspaper said on its Web site.

Time Warner's Warner Bros studio on Friday said it would exclusively release high-definition DVDs in Sony's Blu-ray format, marking a major setback to the HD DVD camp.

Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by nearly two-to-one in the United States last year, but HD DVD had secured major allies in August when Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG said they would go exclusively with HD DVD.

But Paramount is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to change sides if Warner Bros backed Blu-ray, the Financial Times said, citing people familiar with the situation. (Reporting by Nathan Layne)

Paramount is on the verge of dropping HD DVD, potentially sounding the death knell for the format which is in competition with Blu-ray in the home entertainment market. Paramount Pictures was one of the original backers of HD DVD, alongside Warner Brothers, Dreamworks and Universal Pictures. However, according to reports in the Financial Times, the studio has a clause in its HD DVD exclusivity contract which will allow it to jump ship should Warner go first.

It is unclear whether the other backers of the format have similar clauses,

however, the defection of Warner earlier in the week already means that around 70% of all movies are released in Blu-Ray format, even before Paramount joins the club.
Reports from CES suggest that Blu-ray supporters already consider the battle won, triumphantly display their new products even as HD DVD has cancelled all its press conferences in the wake of the Warner defection.

looks like everyone will be buying playstation 3 consoles from now on then

PSP Blu-ray could end UMD format

Sony has revealed that future Blu-ray movies released by Sony Pictures will incorporate a standard resolution version of the film specifically for Portable PlayStation users.

In what is seen as a major swipe at its troubled UMD (Universal Media Disc) PSP format, users will be able to attach the PSP to a PS3 via a USB cable and transfer the standard resolution version of a film onto the handheld device.

Blu-ray movies featuring specially created PSP editions will not be featured in upcoming films, but Sony says it hopes to do so within the coming year.

Should the move prove a success, Sony believes it will help further improve sales of the already successful Blu-ray format.

supposed to be worse than DVD on standard def. TVs- all those extra pixels can't be fitted in. Or something. I tried Casino Royale Blu Ray on my SD screen and it was no different to DVD from the little I saw (had already watched the film before Sony sent me that Blu Ray). So not really worth it on SD.

Doesn't matter about the player. If the tv doesn't support full HD picture it won't come out as good.

No I said I have a PS3 because he asked what type of moron would have a Blu=Ray player and only SD tv?  I replied to suggest I am not a moron, just that I have a PS3 so wanted to know if the blu-ray discs would look any better than DVD.

I've heard that Blu-ray does look better on any tv than a normal DVD, but the difference will be much more noticable on a HDTV.

No I realize that - and I said if you get a bluray player, not a PS3. I also think it's silly to get a PS3 w/o an HDTV but that's another matter.

If you play a bluray movie on an SD tv, the resolution would be no better than a DVD because DVD already takes advantage of the full resolution that SD tvs are capable of. Right?

I've heard that Blu-ray does look better on any tv than a normal DVD, but the difference will be much more noticable on a HDTV.

It was probably a salesman who was the source of that info.

Read another interesting statistic somewhere:

2007 2,4 billion DVD's sold v 14.2 Million HD disks, obviously it's still early days but at this rate it will take years for people to adopt HD and by then something else might be around.

And I am still not convinced by it all somehow. Marketing people like to play with words and wow appeal.

Well yeah, ultimately it's the same program you're watching. DVD is perfectly fine with me to be honest, but yes there is a 'Wow' factor involved in HD. Whether or not its a wow factor that's worth 1000$+ is up for debate, and I would say no. If you have loads of money and spending $2000 isn't a big deal I would definitely go for it but otherwise I'd wait another year until there's some decent ones under $500.

Are the discs in blockbusters etc, the same as the normal discs? ie region free in shops are still region free at these places? I'm presuming they are and fancy joining a couple of these "send a couple a month to you" free trials just to see if anythings worth actually buying.

Bird just had a fit when she got into HMV (I'm at work)  and saw the prices of them. Got her to shut the fuck up whinging and get me 300 (the movie not the amount).

Think I'll be buying some Region A's off ebay.

Anyone know if anyones managed to copy discs yet?

Ultimately one of Bluray's biggest strengths against HDDVD I think, is that it has an easier to say, and more original name.

A Standard DVD has a data rate of btw 3-7MB/Sec, Blu-Ray wil be at least 4* better. Even after being scaled back to SD the resulting image SHOULD be better for the same film as a normal DVD.

No where near as good as 1080P of course, but better than DVD.

P.S. Some people (like me) are not convinced that HD TV's are good enough and cheap enough to buy at this time. Yes you can spend £300 - £500 on a 40" HDTV, but they are NOT as good as the best quality CRT's.
