Any commentator resisting making a few gags when he was sub is a better man than me.

Pierre van Hooijdonk.

When you're 8 it just sounds impossibly 'European' with that edge of being 'difficult.'
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

But my personal favourite is the Mexican Gerrado Torrado (Has to be said in a broad scouse accent)

Same with Trapattoni, sounds like a beer-league defender when said with a scouse accent. Use in the same sentence as catenaccio for best effect.

Torres

Never heard the name until he signed for us.
Sounded very exotic at the time.
Plus it struck fear into the hearts of the opposition, especially with Gerrard behind.

Then realised later it translated as the far from exotic "Towers" and it's as common as muck in Spanish-speaking countries.

 ;D

Funny how names in different contexts can do that to a person!

The Brazilians have some great names but they are wildly inconsistent, with plenty of Freds and Wellingtons etc to bring the average down.

Not quite football but pretty good support for your point: the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, worshipped by opera lovers, is Joe Green in English. Pittsburgh Steelers' defensive tackle in the 70s, "Mean" Joe Greene, was a far better fit.

I've never understood why Schweinsteiger isn't a funny name in German. Schwein means pig and steiger comes from steigen - to climb or mount.

He's basically called pig mounter, yet no German finds that funny.

You've just met the wrong people then... ;) Know quite a few people who actually call him Schweinbesteiger which literally means pig mounter. A guy from Frankfurt I know said his grandpa calls him "Wutzebocker" which in their dialect means something like pig fucker... :D
