Our most influential player?? To even ask that question just shows that he is worthy of that discussion and god knows what he will be like in 5 years time when he is hitting his prime. If the lad keeps achieving these crasy numbers from fullback then dont ever move him as dont fix something thats not broken.

Harry Kane would be nailed on but he's had a few injuries so itll6have to be young JLingz!

The periods during which Kane was injured doesn't factor into the calculation of his age, so Kane is actually 19 for the purpose of the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

PFA Young Player of the Year, that's a certainty surely?

What would say a player like Trent have to do in a season to get PFA Player of the Year?

be Harry Kane?

Since the start of last season, he's only got 2 fewer assists than United's midfield got between them in the treble season.

Third goal yesterday was on him. Yes, Lovren was at fault too, but Trent was looking a bit too casual there. I've said it before and people think am mad, but Trent doesn't cope well with excessive praise and media attention. Love him to bits but I always worry about him when he gets a lot of attention in the press (Sky Sports interviews this week + LFC TV and BBC after West Ham, not to mention Gary Lineker blowing smoke up his arse continuously).

What I wish above all for Trent is more consistency...I'd rather he maintained a 7 for three or four consecutive matches, than have these massive highs interspersed by catastrophic dips in form and focus.   He was a 4 versus Atletico (after Cafu's Ballon d'Or shout), then a 9 versus West Ham and then another 4 today. Not good enough.

Yes, he's still a kid, but he's been a first teamer long enough to be held accountable.

Still adore him though.

Look, am not saying Trent isn't magnificent. He's phenomenal. It's just sometimes I get the feeling he's prone to believing his own hype. But one thing I do admire about him is that when he has a bad game he comes out flying the next match. I just want to see him have a B+ game for 3 or 4 matches in a row, instead of having an A+ followed up by a C-.  A mistake that contributes to a 0-3 defeat to me is pretty catastrophic when you're the best fullback in the country. Especially since the score isn't really flattering Watford: they could have scored a 4th.

It's the opposite kind of... Trent's spoken about it and so has Klopp, he is very self-critical of himself and when something doesn't go his way he deals with it badly, he will lose his cool sometimes and his effort drops off, even the great Cafu told him to forget any mistakes you make and just play your game, that will come as he gets older. Still only just 21 which is scary to think, amazing talent and would not be surprised to see him put in a motm performance in the couple of games.

They say you don't get brilliance with arrogance. Trent is by all accounts a humble lad but his attacking brilliance is obvious. His nonchalance is part of his brilliance - Barca corner kick being the best eg -but that is a different mentality to when you need to dig in defensively or concentrate. He needs to learn to be able to just go back to basics when defending. He can do it - particularly as he showed against Sane a few seasons back but its obviously not as natural for him as it should be.

Honestly? I don't see it. He is a strong contender for player of the season for me, and while yesterday was bad, I don't recall many other sub-par performances from him.

With respect, the people he has surrounding him from his family, to Klopp, to the team around him, I think saying its gone to his head is unfair. There is nothing to support that claim, yes he is sometimes inconsistent, but that is more to do with his age than his attitude. The great defenders are often in their mid twenties before they get the consistency right. Sometimes we forget just how young Trent still is, as it feels as if he's been around forever.

Fair play. I hope you're right. I 100% agree that youth is part of it, and that consistency will come with age. He has the potential to become what Gerrard was and Henderson now is to this Liverpool team: the fulcrum, the inspiration that the team can look at and know everything is going to be okay because they never let their standards fall too low, the one who is able to take control of a game and drag your teammates over the line, the guy who Klopp can rely  on  to play CB in the WC when Virgil has a tummy ache, or partner Mané as a second striker when the front 3 suffer an injury crisis (and do any of these jobs to a reasonably high standard), a leader who constantly leads by example and never allows himself to look like a causal participant even on a day when he's not at his best. That's what I wish to see him become in the next 5 years, and I know he can do it. He's Trent, of course he can.

Didn't mean to imply that all the media attention  has "gone to his head"; this sounds like a much more permanent character flaw than what I actually meant.  What am trying to say is that all this talk of Ballon d'Ors and World's Best can be distracting for anyone, let alone a 21 year old.  It's too much pressure and it's all come a bit too fast... Well, for me anyway, but I'm not Trent.

Think he struggled a bit with the political questions (at 21 I struggled with political questions. I still struggle now). But it was a very mature interview. Think he comes across as a very 'sheltered' footballer. Not that its a bad thing. He's been a trailblazer and long may that continue. But he's not your average scall off a council estate that you expect with 'The scouser in our team'. Just an incredibly talented footballer (even if he wont admit that in the interview).

Definitely didn’t grow up poor or underprivileged but he’s no less a Scouser.  What do you interpret the word Scouser to mean? Is it not about being born in the region, being confident and expressive and having a much more socialist outlook than Little Englanders? Nowhere is it written that a Scouser is born poor or raised on a council Estate (not that there is anything wrong with that either). He’s from a family that clearly look after each other. Nothing more Scouse than that.

Overall he handled the interview well. Some of the questions were inappropriate for a 21 year old in my view. The S*n question was just bizarre. Sh*t-stirring interviewer seemed intimidated and a little bit jealous. Wanted to make him uncomfortable or say something controversial but Trent dodged all the bullets, I think.

I agree with you that Trent has been sheltered. The way he answered the racism question for example proves that, as a Mixed Race kid from a slightly privileged background, he would not have seen or experienced a lot of the hardships that Black kids face on a day to day basis in this country and especially Europe. But I’m happy for that. Let him just focus on football and let other people deal with the politics for now. Life experience will teach him many things as he grows older. And he certainly has more empathy than most 21 year olds I know.

As Klopp has said before why does it matter what he thinks about coronavirus or anything else he is not an expert of? I don’t get why celebrities were given more weight talking about politics as opposed to someone who is an authority in these matters.

From what I read, Scouse has no political affiliation or inclination although traditionally they do come from more humble background.

Alastair Campbell is a left leaning journalist and Liverpool is a left-wing city. He's going to be asked these kind of questions every now and again, especially in GQ interview. We often complain about bland footballers so it's good to see some more interesting questions being asked an answered. Totally different to being asked about coronavirus.

''“Whereas Trent is actually running the game from full-back for his team. The best team in Europe, their playmaker is a right-back from West Derby. It’s mad, it’s strange, I’ve never seen a full-back be such an influence for his team before.”'' - Carragher on Trent

Imo I said this a while ago, Trent is the closest thing to Alves. Funny carragher mentioned Alves, but fails to realize that Alves was doing for Sevilla exactly what he says Trent is doing for us. He was the primary source of all attacking play for Sevilla before he moved to Barca.

That Rafa team with Alves would’ve been just ridiculous.

We were front runner to sign him until Barcelona turned up. We had no chance.

Financially, we were just nowhere near where we are now. Add to the fact that Latin American players always prefer those Spanish giants.

As for Trent, he will be pushing toward Alves standards in no time. Let’s see how Klopp can make him score goals as good as making them.

Loved that - thanks for sharing.

Not only a great player but a really great person. A credit to his family, teachers and coaches who clearly looked after him from a young age and helped make him the person he is today.

The club's official Facebook page has just shared a video of all of Trent's Premier League assists. There were more from set pieces then I expected - got me thinking how his assist stats compare to Robbo if you just look at open play. Also, how Trent compares in number of set piece assists against the rest of the league / Europe. Anyone know how to look into this sort of thing?

Trent’s taking this competition seriously. Any distractions on FIFA is equivalent to conceding a goal. Having two presenters babble rubbish down the mic for the entire duration of the game must be so off putting.

Haha this can't be serious. Please tell me it's not.
So bloody what? If you watch football to be absolutely miserable then go watch cricket.

Somebody please tell him to put the bloody red phone away during the FIFA online tournament thing, talk to the presenters and the opponents like a proper human and stop looking so disinterested and bored. He's winning, which is good, but his personality is taking a hit. Not presenting himself as the approachable type here. Atsu looked so pleased just to be involved today, while Trent was just like... ::)

If any of his people read this forum, please, have a word.
Agree that he's not been particularly engaging during this event and even kinda rude, messing with his phone while they're interviewing him after matches.

But I also don't think it's a particularly big deal or that "his people need to have a word".
David Platt has a face like a Michael Myers mask being stretched over a dinosaur egg.
Aquilani is better than Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Messi and Beckenbauer put together.
