Same here. A favourite of my dad’s (same social circles) and met him a few times as a kid.

Something cyclical about a successful Liverpool team having a tough snidey Scot with sublime skills.

Scored the first live goal I ever saw Liverpool score, March 1964 v Ipswich, we won 6-0. Happy birthday Saint.
Heard a wonderful story about shanks, St John and that sending off. Apparently the Saint had been sent off not long before, and Shanks feared a lengthy ban. He called a newspaper in and asked for a photographer, and sent Bob Paisley to get boot polish and iodine. St. John was ordered to the treatment room, drop his kecks, and boot polish and iodine was rubbed all over his private parts. The photographer was instructed to take photos.

At the disciplinary hearing with the FA, the panel made it clear what they were going to do, until Shanks said "but look what they did to my player" thrusting the photos in front of them. The panel were a little taken back at the assault on St Johns private parts, and said, "don't do it again, and it's a three match ban". Shanks was a crafty so n so wasn't he😂😂😂😂

Agree with all of you about being scared to read the thread. A 'happy birthday' in the title is a great idea to save others' worrying as they find this.
Loved the guy and 'Saint and Greavsie' was as much a part of my growing up as Shoot! magazine, Football Focus, Radio 2 (as it was) and Kick Off on a Friday night.

Shit, I am old.

Happy Birthday Saint.

I too was a bit worried about what had happened to him. All good to learn he's reached 82 and still going strong. Saw him many times growing up, him and Roger with Cally and Thomo providing the ammo, great times. And up pops the head of Ian St John.

Too young to remember his playing days but loved watching himself and Greavsie on the TV in the mid 80s. Two class acts, funny as hell together and some footballers in their day. Happy Birthday.

Happy birthday Saint, and many more of 'em!

He won't remember, but I certainly do, when he was guest at a Roscoe Hall formal dinner. A relaxed, intelligent and classy man. After dinner, Dean and wife bidden goodnight, he turned to us and said, ''Well, lads, ready for a drink?" Off to the club next door. He liked his Heineken, was a great conversationalist with a sharp sense of humour. Already a legend in the late 60s, there were no airs about him, just one of the boys.

Still recall him and Billy Bremner going to ground in one of the classic Liverpool/Leeds games of that period, two little Scotsmen belting eachother's ribs as they went down, not giving an inch, canny enough to take care the action happened blind side of the ref.
"Ders fuck'n arms goin in, ders fuck'n legs goin in, ders de 'ole fuck'n yuman fuck'n body goin in."  - expression of admiration from kopite behind me, Leeds v. L'pool, late '60s.
