Considering your past history, that is quite the strong sentiment

You can't expect him to walk round the car and open the door for her, he's knackered from carrying the fridge

The only times a door has been opened for me in a car was when id been arrested.

Not quite as bad, but was thinking, the last time someone opened the car door for me was when I was a kid and the child lock was on.

It was last Wednesday after the Champions League game which I watched at home. I asked her to pick me up as I had a few beers watching the game.

I told her I would get one of my mates to drive me home and she could just leave. She was nice enough to at least drive me home which was easier for me. Then she left.

Please tell me when you got to yours you sat there and counted to 12 before asking why she hasn't opened your door yet?

If she's getting in a cab or suchlike then I open her door. For a normal trip somewhere usually not, but maybe if I'm around there.

I might if i've had a particularly good blow or hand job; obviously she might have to wait a few seconds whilst i sort myself out.

I open doors for my wife, stand back and let her go if room for only one to walk, general gentlemanly things you know. Do the same for my mother and sisters, any member of the opposite sex I may be with, all part of being a nice person.

No. I would on occasions where I'm out of the car first etc, but I wouldn't be running around the car but some of the answers in this thread makes me think some of you wouldn't open the door for your female friend even if the car was on fire!!

I'd be questioning the sanity of said female friend if she was sat there waiting for me to open the door for her whilst the car was on fire.

I was thinking about how to phrase this, I agree. It is patronising. I'm perfectly able of opening a car door myself.

So...the same as every other man who posted in here then. Because nobody mentioned any other type of door holding, or other gentlemanly conduct. It's specifically about car doors.

I've opened a lot of car doors recently, mainly for my mum who isn't very mobile anymore and really struggles to get in and out of the car and lacks the strength to open the door wide enough when she's sitting in the car.

All well and good, I'm certain you'd all do the same.

Problem is, I've got that used to legging round the other side or going to the passenger side first, I find myself opening the door for people who don't need it...like the missus (I'm sure she's cottoned on and milks it!)

In England, do people do the whole 'let the ladies in/out of the lift first' thing? People are obsessive about it in the States to the point of some really awkward moments. It's pointless and annoying but I have to go along with it. I don't see why we can't just enter/exit an elevator in a gender neutral, calm and efficient manner

I always do this. Although it's with most things, I let her go first.

Not necessarily a US thing though, I did it in SA as well.

I see it as part of the 'little things' that prop up sexism and inequality.  E.g. Carrying bags, opening doors, pulling out chairs, etc.  They're treated as quaint, gentlemanly or good manners, when they're actually just implications that women need our help, the poor things...

Yeah, I'm always uneasy when someone does anything like that. i know they just see it as good manners, but.... to me, it's good manners to help someone who is, or might be, struggling with eg heavy bags, heavy doors etc... So when opening doors etc for me just because I'm a girl, there is this underlying assumption I'm weak and in need of help, when I'm really not.

By awkward I mean, a guy is at the front of a crowded lift, gets to the ground floor, and he looks back sees a lone woman in the back and he and everyone crushes else to the side to let her out first. It's pointless. I'll hold doors, no problem, but this is just inefficient and pointless.
