1980 Ipswich Town (Division One) Anfield 1-1
Terry McDermott 39'(Pen)
Att 48,084

Here's a clip of the two goals from the Ipswich match in October 1980 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CearMgbS1k#t=178s

There is no evidence there that Frans Thijssen (or any other Ipswich player) threw a piece of mud in McDermott's direction as he was about to take his penalty-kick. But the mud-slinging incident sounds very familiar. So I have done some research into this.

The home fixture with Ipswich was also drawn 1-1 in the 1979-80 season (23rd February 1980). It was in THIS match that McDermott missed a late penalty (86th minute) that would have won the match. Paul Cooper saved the kick but Liverpool players appealed to referee Bert Newsome that McDermott had been distracted by Thijssen throwing mud at him as he ran up. The referee, however, refused to have the kick re-taken. This incident occurred only a minute or two after Eric Gates had equalised David Fairclough's early goal.

Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 0 Liverpool, 12.10.1984 White Heart Lane..

Grobbelaar, Neal, Kennedy, Lawrenson, Whelan, Hansen, Molby, Nicol, Walsh (Gillespie), Wark, Robinson

"Dalglish dropped from the first team for the first time in his Liverpool career. Joe Fagan said later it was the daftest decision he'd made as Liverpool's manager."

I've picked this one because I was at that match and not only was the result painful but the walk to and from the ground were even more so.
Anyone who has ever had the pain of going to that venue in the late 70's/ right through to the 80's will know where I'm coming from.

Terry is absolutely right and easily the worst of all those away matches at Tottenham during that period was the F.A. cup 6th round tie on the 8th of March 1980 when constant battles in the Tottenham High Road blighted the whole occasion. There was never really any time when the journey between the stadium and Seven Sisters was a pleasant one. But that cup-tie brought out the worst in both sets of supporters.

That united game in 1996 was my first trip to Old Trafford. All I can say is it was better than my second for that cup game in 99. We played pretty well but Fowler was out injured and despite having the better of it we lacked a cutting edge.

Saw Rob Jones outside the ground with Mick Johnno from Brookie. He was injured, in fact not sure he played that much more for us after that.

i heard about this game

again it was one of evos books. he said even the hardest lfc fans said it was the scariest away game ever. it was about a few mins walk to the train but that day it took two hours. there was a good few Liverpool fans there and for some reason they were only let out in groups of 50 (the bobbys obviously wanted us to get our heads kicked in)

gradually as we increased by 50 over the course of a few seconds and our group got bigger we started to give as good as we got. was told one hot dog seller outside the ground was laughing his head off at some scousers getting bashed so they proceeded to get his hot dog stand, boiling water, onions et all and tip it over him

one lad got thrown through the window of a hardware store. when he got his barings he suddenly realized he could get his hands on some machinery. he promptly went after the spurs fans with a chainsaw!

Nick,

Rob's final first-team appearance for Liverpool was against Chelsea on the 25th of April 1998.

Even though he did not play at Old Trafford on this day in 1996, you are right to say that he did not feature much after that date. He only played 3 times in 1996-97 and 26 times in 1997-98 before he sadly had to retire as a player at the age of just twenty-seven.

Didn't realise he played that much in 97-98, bit of a strange season that one, slight anti-climax from the season before yet nowhere near the trainwreck of the one after. Slightly slips from the memory.

I remember Cally's goal as an absolute screamer.

We had struggled to break them down for nearly an hour when Cally got the ball out on the right wing in front of the Paddock at the Kop end. He cut inside, transferred the ball to his weaker left foot and curled it brilliantly and with pace around the Middlesbrough defence and into the top corner past (almost certainly from my recollection) Boro goalkeeper Jim Platt. No television cameras there to capture the moment unfortunately.

Still don't know how we lost that day? Beckham scored with their only shot on target while we had about 20 attempts without finding the net.

I expect a game at Anfield 10 years ago against Leeds to figure prominently tomorrow. Not so much for the goals by Kewell (then at Leeds) and Murphy which earned each team a point, but more the events in the home dressing room at half time which led to Gerard Houllier being rushed to hospital for a major heart operation. Moments like that put football in perspective.

BIG TIME. I can't believe that was 10 years ago.

I really hope that Gerard stays away from the game and lives a long and happy life away from the stress and ill health that he endured when he was with us and came back to haunt him during his short Villa stint as manager there.

That League Cup defeat to Southampton was bad. Mainly because I was going out with a girl from there at the time and she saw me acting like a petulant child when they scored a late winner. Think she saw my true colours that night after a month or so of trying to be nice!

As mentioned yesterday, that Leeds game was overshadowed by what was to follow. I was in Sydney at the time so watched the game (great chip from Fowler that hit the bar for Murphy to tap in) and went to bed slightly annoyed with the performance but thinking nothing of it, I wasn’t even aware that Gerard hadn’t come out for the 2nd half.

I got a call the next morning from my brother. He sounded pretty upset and his first question was “Have you heard about Ged?” Immediately thought the worst just from his reaction. Shocking stuff given it just came so out of the blue. Thankfully he was ok but I didn’t realize how touch and go it had been at the time. On a footballing front I think Thommo did brilliantly that season to step in and get us consistently picking up results.

was the first ever match played at landsdowne under floodlights.

think the same night norwich won away to bayern munich. i got home very late from the game for a 10 year old. folks agreed i could go in an hour late to school the next day. me dad the next morning rang and told me from work not to bother going in and hung up on me. he was in a right mood that day. grumpy fucker! :D

A quite stunning own goal from Irishman Allan Hunter. Maybe Everton's Michael Lyons was watching because he did something very similar in our favour the following weekend!

Hunter was almost on the touchline in a left-back position about 40 yards from goal. Challenged by a Liverpool player, he opted for Safety First (as he thought) and decided to play the ball back to his goalkeeper, Paul Cooper. Unfortunately for Hunter, Cooper was not expecting a back-pass and was wandering around on the edge of his own penalty-area probably thinking the ball was going up into Liverpool territory. Hunter's exquisite lob left him completely stranded and the ball flew way over his head and straight into his empty goal.

Nice story. I watched the game in my local pub where we always got pork pies and sandwiches at half time. Seem to recall we scored 1st then Owen missed a glorious chance to seal it when clean through. They nicked it right at the death with a goal which I'm still convinced was a mile offside.

Starting the ball rolling for tomorrow as I can't use these forums at work. Remember a 1-1 draw with Blackburn in 2006, a pretty dull goalless draw against Coventry in 1995, and a 2-1 win at Wimbledon in 1989 in my time as a match goer. Loving this thread, reading other fans memories as well as posting my own. Well in Rafa La for starting it off.

One of the most important home wins ever

What a day!.

Recall screaming down the phone about the bar stewards being told to do one. Problem was at the other end the phone was on open mic. An entire office shared the news.

Had the Guardian on F5, this site, official site and was agog with the happenings.

Standards Corrupted shirt was worn for the day and once all was signed, sealed AND safe, said shirt retired.

Momentous times.

That blackburn game was my last match at Anfield as a single man. Momentous! Pretty poor game though, Bellamy scoring a header from a corner was the surprise highlight.

I went to both the last 2 games on the list, Coventry and Blackburn, and cannot remember a single thing about either game.

was at the Blackburn match when Bellamy scored (with my mate who is a Blackburn fan beside me). The trip was more memorable for what happened afterwards that the match itself. Flew over that morning to Manchester, train down. We were due to fly back that night. On the train back to the airport, we stopped for a long, long time, very close to the airport. Apparently some poor sould had taken his own life further up the tracks. So this delay meant we missed the flight and ended up kipping in the airport with a good few others in the same situation. And then fork out for another flight the next morning.

This performance against Derby County was every bit as good as the performance that destroyed Tottenham 7-0 at Anfield six weeks earlier. We just didn't get the goals we deserved to show for it. Having said that, five-nil clearly showed the gulf between the teams. From the team that humiliated Spurs on the 2nd of September, there were two changes to the starting team that thrashed Derby ... Hansen for Hughes and Johnson for McDermott. We would have won anway but Johnson, who had scored at Norwich in the previous First Division fixture, justified his inclusion by scoring the first goal against Derby.

Newcastle Knights? Andrew Johns? Had a piss next to him once. Great moment!...

kriss - cheers for posting in this thread by the way. A truly encylopedic knowledge and sounds like you went to most games back in the day? Do you still go?

No problem at all. I just felt that what I had to say was going to be (a) lengthy and (b) quite personal and I wasn't sure that I wanted to put all that up here for the world to see. Hence my decision to use a Personal Message instead of an 'ordinary' reply on the topic.
