Proposed F1 track in the Phillippines by Tilke.

Reminds me of interlagos

1992 season review part 1

A season dominated by the all-conquering Williams fw14b, arguably the most technologically advanced car of all time with its fully developed active suspension, traction control and semi automatic gearbox. There were no major rule changes although Pirelli had withdrawn from the sport leaving goodyear as the sole tyre supplier. Elsewhere the Modena Lamborghini team withdrew from the sport but the number of cars remained the same due to Fondmetal and Andrea Moda (previous Coloni) increasing to two car teams.

A pre-qualifying system remained in operation for the 32 entries, the top 13 teams from the previous half season were exempt but all teams outside of that (3 teams and 6 cars) would compete in pre-qualifying, two cars would drop out leaving a field of 30 for qualifying proper that would take place over Friday and Saturday, the top 26 cars would advance to race day on Sunday.

McLaren Honda
1.   Ayrton Senna had won 3 of the previous 4 world titles but knew he was in for a big fight with the resurgent Williams.
2.   Gerhard Berger

Tyrrell Ilmor, a new engine and two new drivers
3.   Olivier Grouillard
4.   Andrea De Cesaris

Williams Renault
5.   Nigel Mansell, the favorite for the title that had eluded him thus far
6.   Riccardo Patrese

Brabham Judd
7.   Eric Van De Poele
8.   Giovanna Amati, the first female driver for many years in f1, she would eventually be replaced by future world champion Damon Hill

Footwork Mugen Honda
9.   Michele Alboreto
10.   Aguri Suzuki

Lotus Ford
11.   Mika Hakkinen
12.   Johnny Herbert

Fondmetal Ford
14 . Andrea Chiesa, later replaced by Eric Van De Poele
15. Gabriele Tarquini

March Ilmor
16. Karl Wendlinger, later replaced by Jan Lammers
17. Paul Belmondo, later replaced by Emanuele Naspetti, the team had resumed the march name with the Leyton House name no longer being used.

Benetton Ford
19. Michael Schumacher
20. Martin Brundle

Dallara Ferrari
21. JJ lehto
22. Pierluigi Martini

Minardi Lamborghini
23. Christian Fittipaldi, briefly replaced by Alex Zanardi when injured
24 Gianni Morbidelli

Ligier Renault
25. Thierry Boutsen
26. Erik Comas

Ferrari
27. Jean Alesi
28. Ivan Capelli, later replaced by Nicola Larini

Venturi Larrousse Lamborghini
29. Bertrand Gachot
30. Ukyo Katayama

Jordan Yamaha
32. Stefano Modena
33. Mauricio Gugelmin, it was to be a hard year for the team that impressed everyone in 1991 but the lack of funding meant they had to use a Yamaha engine when their car was already designed for a ford engine.

Andrea Moda Judd

34. Alex Caffi, walked out to be replaced by Roberto Moreno
35. Enrico Bertaggia, walked out to be replaced by Perry McCarthy
Andrea Moda had risen from the ashes of the Coloni team, the effort was a complete joke, above both Caffi and Bertaggia walked when they saw what a joke operation this was. More later.

Round 1 South Africa, Mansell gets off to a flyer

Nigel Mansell was on pole from Ayrton Senna but Senna could do nothing as Riccardo Patrese stormed past Senna and Gerhard Berger to take 2nd at the start. The top 3 of Mansell, Patrese and Senna remained unchanged throughout the race. The promising Michael Schumacher was an excellent 4th ahead of Berger while Johnny Herbert was a brilliant 6th, his first points in almost three years.

Down the grid, Giovanni Amati was well off the pace and spun at least 6 times in practice, while Andrea Moda turned up with old Coloni cars but after a shakedown to get used to a new track the team weren’t allowed enter pre qualifying as team owner Andrea Sassetti hadn’t paid a 100,000 entry fee with the FIA saying that he had only purchased Coloni assets and not the entry.

Round 2 Mexico

Mansell and Patrese locked out the front row and the two remained first and second thoughout the race, behind them the Benetton’s locked out row 2. Senna made a great start to leap from 6th to 3rd but a transmission failure ended his race. Schumacher who dropped from 3rd to 6th managed to recover to 3rd for his first ever podium. Berger came home 4th after Brundle’s retirement and set fastest lap, Andrea De Cesaris was a fine 5th for Tyrrell and Mika Hakkinen 6th for Lotus
.
Down the back both Brabhams failed to qualify for the first time ever, while both Andrea Moda’s remained in the garage as the team opted to continue work on building and developing the cars leading to Alex Caffi and Enrico Bertaggia deciding to quit. It was the last Mexican Grand Prix until 2015.

Round 3 Brazil. 100% record for Williams

McLaren brought 6 cars to Brazil. 100% record for Williamil including 3 new mp4/7s but it was to be a disappointment as Berger started from the pits and lasted only 3 laps while Senna’s fasted lap was over 3 seconds slower than Mansells. Senna appeared to be playing cat and mouse with Schumacher as on more than one occasion he was passed by Schumacher for 3rd only to repass him one corner later.  Senna (with a train of cars behind him) eventually retired after 17 laps.

Patrese did lead the race until a faster pitstop allowed Mansell to take the lead and for the third time in a row, Williams finished 1-2, Schumacher was again 3rd while Alesi and Capelli were 4th and 5th getting Ferrari off the mark. Michele Alboreto got his first points since 1989 with 6th for Footwork.
Down at Andrea Moda, Perry McCarthy and Roberto Moreno were drafted in but McCarthy wasn’t issued a superlicence so that was the end of his weekend while Moreno didn’t pre qualify..In a surprise bit of trivia the 3rd fastest lap of the race was set by Gabriele Tarquini in the Fondmetal.

Round 4 Spain, Mansell walks it in the rain.

Mansell was again on pole but Schumacher was a creditable 2nd, a bad start saw Schumacher lose places but he would recover to 2nd with Patrese spinning off to blot Williams 100% record so far. Further back Jean Alesi drove the wheels off the Ferrari after being punted off by Berger. Alesi recovered to a brilliant 3rd only 3 seconds behind Schumacher. Berger was 4th, Alboreto 5th and Pierluigi Martini was 6th for Dallara.

Mansells 4th win in a row gave him a 22 point lead. Down the back, Brabham replaced Giovanna Amati with Damon Hill while Andrea Moda again made a show of themselves, Moreno failed to pre qualify by a mile while Perry McCarthys dream fo racing in f1 lead to he shortest debut ever as the cars engine failed just yards outside the pits he had just exited, amid rumours the engine was already blown before he even moved from the pitbox.

Round 5 San Marino, normal service resumes for Williams.

Not for the first time both Williams qualified first and second and stayed there for the whole race with Mansell scoring a record breaking 5th win in a row from the start of the season. Senna ended up 3rd but was in so much discomfort he had to be helped from the cockpit and wasn’t even fit to stand on the podium. He was now 42 points behind Mansell.

Martin Brundle got his first points with a fine 4th for Benetton and Michele Alboreto was 5th again continuing his good form with Martini’s Dallara 6th.

Round 6 Monaco, Mansell is finally taken down.

Mansell had come close to winning in Monaco many times but if he didn’t get it done this year then he never would, in what turned out to be his last every Monaco race, Mansell was running away with proceedings when late on he suffered a puncture. Senna passed Mansell as he pitted and despite fresh tyres Senna (with his car on heavily worn tyres resembling Bambi on Ice) somehow held off Mansell in the closing laps in a thrilling battle. Senna finally broke Mansell’s winning streak to win around Monaco for the 4th year in a row and 5th time overall.

Mansell did increase his lead in the championship though with Patrese finshing 3rd, the Italian 28 points off the pace. Schumacher and Brundle were 4th and 5th and Bertrand Gachot got a useful point for Venturi Larrousse.

As for Andrea Moda, McCarthy didn’t set a time as the team only let him out of the pits with a few seconds of pre qualifying left, he didn’t have time to set a lap with the team apparently trying to bully him out, former driver Enrico Bertaggia was offering $1m to get his seat back, the FIA blocked this as the team had already changed their line up twice. If McCarthy would quit the change could be allowed so it was obvious the team were trying to force his hand.

Team mate Moreno meanwhile sensationally qualified 26th, he was 19th and last when he retired on lap 11.

Mods, do you think this could be amended to become something along the lines of the Formula One - General & GOAT thread, and we have a new 2019 Formula One thread created for all current-season discussion?

Quite often we get discussions that span multiple seasons (the fantastic history posts, the 'Hamilton's stature' posts, etc) and it'd be useful to split these off as the long-running discussions that they are and have the seasonal topics as seperate.  Only a small number of the posts in here have been 2019-relevant, and many of them continue themes from earlier threads.

I'm thinking as much about last year, when half the thread was focused on 'GOAT' discussion that was essentially the same as the previous year - just think it'd be useful if that stuff could be contained and we have a dedicated thread for the season.

I think right now everything is fair discussion. I do think last season alot of the downtime between race was spent talking about who is the GOAT or why Hamilton is great/not great etc. Almost got the thread close to being locked which was annoying.

I think for now it should be alright but once the season starts maybe open a 'non-race F1 discussion' thread

Might be a nice central place for Hellrazors reviews to sit

speaking of which

Canada, Berger takes surprise win while Wendlinger impresses.

Senna took what was his only pole of the season, he held the lead from Mansell at the start but the Englishman spun off attempting a rash overtake. Senna missed out on another chance to close the gap when an electrical failure robbed him of a win. Patrese suffered a gearbox problem allowing Berger to lead. Martin Brundle looked a potential winner but two laps after passing Schumacher for 2nd the Englishman retired with transmission issues.

Berger took his first win of the year with Schumacher 2nd, Alesi was 3rd and Karl Wendlinger was a magnificent 4th for the beleaguered March team who struggled financially, the team even advertised for sponsors on a local radio station resulting in some local sponsors appearing on the car. Andrea De Cesaris was 5th for Tyrrell ahead of Erik Comas in 6th, Ligiers first points in 3 years. Ukyo Katayama was a superb 5th for Larrousse late on until a blown engine saw him retire.

Oh and Andrea moda? Well after Monaco the team came back down to earth, having not paid engine supplier Judd, the team wasn’t given engines so actually borrowed some from Brabham, McCarthy was never even allowed on track while Moreno failed to pre qualify.

France: Mansell back in the swing.

Mansell was on pole but Patrese passed his team mate at the start, as the Williams duo squabbled over the lead further back Schumacher crashed into the back of Senna taking the Brazilian out. The race was run on aggregate after a long stoppage due to heavy rain. During the stoppage Senna confronted Schumacher who was still in the race with Senna allegedly claiming to have rattled Schumacher, he may have been right as at the second start Schumacher clattered into Modena’s Jordan and was out of the race.

Patrese defended his lead vigorously until he suddenly waved Mansell through, Patrese denied there were team orders (or rather refused to answer if there were) but it did seem clear to everyone that’s exactly what it was. As the rain returned Mansell finished nearly a minute ahead of his team mate for yet another Williams 1-2. Martin Brundle was 3rd for his first every official podium. Brundle had previously finished on the podium twice for Tyrrell before their results were annulled.

Mika Hakkinen and Johnny Herbert gave Lotus a double points finish with 4th and 6th sandwiching Comas’s Ligier.

Before the race the teams were given a logistical nightmare as French lorry drivers staged a blockade, all teams bar one made it to the race however, the one team that didn’t make it? Yes you’ve guessed it, FERRARI, only shitting you, it was Andrea Moda.

Standings
Drivers: Mansell 66, Patrese 34, Schumacher 26, Berger/Senna 18
Constructors: Williams 100, McLaren 36, Benetton 35, Ferrari 13, Lotus 6, Footwork 5

Britain 1992, stroll in the park for Mansell whilst a famous Brit debuts.

Pre-qualifying would have been rejigged around this point but given that two cars were eliminated its really not worth going into too much detail as Andrea Moda usually were the two cars. Perry McCarthy alleges his sold 1000 “let Pel out” shirts that weekend with the team simply using his car for spare parts. The team relented and let Pel out for pre qualifying but for some stupid reason did so on wet tyres on a dry track. McCarthy once quipped “it ruined any chance I had of pole.”

In truth his chance was as good as anyone elses other than Nigel Mansell who took pole by nearly 2 seconds. Indeed only 12 cars were inside the 107% time (not that that rule was in place then). Patrese did pass Mansell at the start but a few corners later Mansell was back infront. Mansell and Patrese were 1st and 2nd throughout the race. Martin Brundle was 3rd again, he was there for much of the race apart from a brief moment when Senna passed him only for the Brazilian to again retire.

Schumacher passed Berger for 4th on the final lap while Hakkinen was 6th. Mansell had by far the best car but there was no doubt that at Silverstone he always pulled out his A game, his fastest lap late on was almost 2 seconds quicker than anyone.

Meanwhile Damon Hill qualified for a race for the first time for the struggling underfunded Brabham outfit, Hill finished 16th, 4 laps down at a track where he would win in 1994.

Germany: Mansell within touching distance

Mansell started on pole although during pitstops he briefly lost the lead to Patrese and then Senna who attempted to go through the race on one set of tyres. Mansell picked off both men and paced him to win his 8th race of the year opening up a 46 point gap with just 6 races and 60 points left on the table.

Senna courageously held off Patrese who with a few corners to go lunged wildly down the inside and spun off. The home crowd was delighted as this allowed Schumacher on to the podium in 3rd just ahead of team mate Brundle. Alesi was 5th with Comas 6th.

Standings:
Drivers:
Mansell 86, Patrese 40, Schumacher 33, Senna 24, Berger 20
Teams: Williams 126, Benetton 49, McLaren 44, Ferrari 15, Lotus 7

and to finish off

Hungary, Mansell finally does it

Patrese took his only pole of the year and lead comfortably early on, Mansell slipped to 4th but despite passing Berger he spun on lap 30 to drop to 4th. He passed Berger again and then got a major boost when Patrese spun off to leave him 2nd behind Senna. If Mansell outscored Patrese by 4 points today he would be world champion. Patrese was back in 7th and retired soon after with a blown engine. With 16 laps left though Mansell was in the pits with a slow puncture. He resumed 6th, with Patrese out Mansell need now only finish 3rd.

Schumacher lead a 4 way battle for 3rd with Brundle, Hakkinen and Mansell tucked in behind. Earlier in the race Brundle nudged the rear of Schumacher’s car and the damage caused Schumachers rear wing to break and fly off causing the German to spin off. Now 5th Mansell then overtook Hakkinen and just one lap later he disposed of Brundle. Third was enough but for good measure Mansell passed Berger for 2nd and stayed there. As Senna took an easy win for once, Mansell rounded the final corner some 40 seconds later to finally win a world championship he had come so close to before. Berger was 3rd while Brundle spun on the last lap dropping to 5th behind Hakkinen. Ivan Capelli scored the last point for Ferrari, only his third of the season but the day belonged to Mansell.

Belgium: Schumacher takes his first win while Brabham bid a sad farewell

Hungary was the last time pre-qualifying ever took place in f1. Brabham withdrew from the sport having run just one car in Hungary (Eric Van De Poele left to join Fondmetal). Andrea Moda were warned to start running two cars properly or face the consequences having allowed Perry McCarthy out of the pits 45 seconds before the end of pre qualifying in Hungary.

In Belgium the 30 strong field was reduced further when Erik Comas crashed violently at Blanchimont, Comas claimed in later years that Ayrton Senna who arrived on the scene saved his life.

Mansell was yet again on pole and the race began with rain threatening. Senna dropped as low as 12th having tried to stay out on dries in the rain. Mansell and Patrese were looking good until they dropped the ball. In a famous moment Schumacher went wide at one turn allowing team mate Brundle to third. Schumacher noticed that Brundle’s wet tyres were blistered so he pitted (allegedly Brundle was meant too pit for dries first but having been distracted by Schumacher he dropped the ball).

On dries Schumacher was flying and by the time both Williams pitted he was in the lead. Mansell and Patrese may have still caught him were it not for engine misfires so Schumacher took his first ever win, a further 90 would follow, it was also at the track were Schumacher had made his first ever start a year earlier. Mansell, Patrese, Brundle, Senna and Hakkinen completed the points finishers. The result also meant Williams were constructors champions.

At Andrea Moda, McCarthy was allowed out in pre qualifying but suffered a terrifying moment when his car went straight on at Eau Rouge, McCarthy nursed his car back to the pits where he discovered the team had knowingly put in a broken steering column, this could have killed him, poor McCarthy had enough and quit but it wasn’t to matter.

Italy: Mansell makes shock announcement whilst the FIA have enough of Andrea Moda

Andrea Moda arrived in Monza only to be denied entry to the paddock, the FIA threw them out of the championship having had enough of their jokeshop effort.

After taking pole position Nigel Mansell announced on the morning of the race he would retire from formula 1at the end of the season, angered by Williams approaches to Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. Mansell didn’t want to team with Prost again after problems the two had in 1990 at Ferrari so despite strenuous efforts from Williams, Mansell announced he would quit. Senna meanwhile was vetoed from joining Williams in 1993 due to the terms of Prost’s contract. Senna had even offered to drive for free.

Mansell lead the race for 19 laps until he waved Patrese into the lead, Patrese was on course to finish 2nd in the championship while he was also competing in his home race. Mansell retired with 12 laps left while with 6 laps left a hydraulic problem saw Patrese slow and he had to settle for 5th. Senna took his third win of the year, Brundle was a fine 2nd with Schumacher 3rd. Berger who started from the pits recovered to 4th ahead of Patrese’s limping Williams while Andrea De Cesaris was 6th in his home race.

Schumacher was now 2nd in the championship, one point ahead of both Senna and Patrese.

Portugal: Mansell’s record win, and an almighty collision.

A relaxed Mansell strolled to a routine win as mayhem ensued behind him. Patrese was all over the back of Berger as the latter attempted a pit stop, Patrese misread this and clattered the back of the McLaren. Berger somehow avoided damage but in a frightening moment Patrese’s car went airborne and almost collided with an overhead gantry, he was also close to flipping backwards. The car landed on its rear and skidded down the pit wall and to everyone’s relief, Patrese got out unhurt. He was a very lucky man.

Berger finished 2nd with Senna 3rd, Brundle 4th, Hakkinen 5th and Alboreto 6th. Mansell's 9th win of the season was a new record for most wins in a calendar year.

Following Monza the Fondmetal team withdrew from the championship meaning from this race we had just 26 competitors. At Ferrari Ivan Capelli raced for the last time, after a poor season he was replaced by Nicola Larini

Japan: Patrese finally get his win

All that was really left to battle for 2nd in the championship. Mansell was again on pole and similar to Monza he allowed Patrese into the lead but would retire soon after, Patrese showed no ill effects from his Portuguese crash and finally won his first race of the year. Berger was 2nd nearly a minute ahead of the consistent Brundle. De Cesaris was a fine 4th for Tyrrell ahead of Alesi while Christian Fittiapaldi was a fine 6th for Minardi.

Lotus so nearly ended up ahead of Ferrari in the constructors as Johnny Herbert retired early having been running 3rd while Hakkinen retired on the same lap as Mansell whilst running 4th.

Patrese lead the battle for 2nd by 6 points from Senna, 9 from Schumacher, 17 points ahead of Berger who was 5 points clear of Brundle.

Australia: Mansell and Senna come to blows as Berger takes the spoils.

In what many thought could be both their last races Mansell and Senna furiously battled for the lead for 18 wonderful laps in this race until Senna crashed into the back of Mansell in an incident similar to Suzuka 1990 when Senna rammed Prost off the track. This promoted Patrese and Berger to first and second and they had an equally competitive fight for the lead until Patrese retired with engine trouble.

Berger lead the last 30 laps but a gearbox problem saw Schumacher close right up by the final corner, but the German ran out of time. Berger took the win, his last race for McLaren before he joins Ferrari in 1993 while engine supplier Honda were leaving  the sport with a win in their final race (though they eventually returned).

Brundle was 3rd once again meaning Benetton finished in the points in every race, Alesi was 4th and Thierry Boutsen was a fine 5th for his first points in two years for Ligier. Stefano Modena finished 6th for Jordan, scoring a point in the last race of an abysmal season.

The standings were
Mansell 108, Patrese 56, Schumacher 53, Senna 50, Berger 49, Brundle 38, Alesi 18, Hakkinen 11, DeCesaris 8, Alboreto 6

Constructors:

Williams 164, McLaren 99, Benetton 91, Ferrari 21, Lotus 13, Tyrrell 8, Footwork and Ligier 6, March 3, Dallara 2, Jordan, Minardi and Larrousse 1.

The season will always be remembered for Mansell’s dominance in a car by far and away the best on the grid. But few could dispute Mansell didn’t deserve it having come close before. Ayrton Senna showed flashes of his brilliance, in particular his gutsy Monaco win. There were some hugely promising drives from future stars like Schumacher, Alesi, Hakkinen and Herbert.

Veterans like Patrese and Berger had their moments and Martin Brundle had his best ever year in the sport, perhaps being out-qualified 16-0 by a less experienced team mate hurt him but in later years his results stood up very well against Schumacher, a lot more than can be said for a lot of his team mates.

It was a lopsided championship but with 5 different winners in the last 5 races and with some absolute legends on show one shouldn’t be so dismissive.

Proposed F1 track in the Phillippines by Tilke.

The straight between the left hander at the 5th corner and the 6th corner.

I love the "lightened" road as opposed to the "current" road. That would make drivers who speed up from 4th corner, to have a hard braking left turn before entering corner 5 followed by a U-turn corner 6.

Why did the Halo get a single beam in the front instead of a two beams that balances each other?

It’s only ever had the one. Something to do with it being central that your eyes ignore it so it’s like it isn’t there, where as if you had two it would be in your line of sight for corners, etc.

Very nice from Haas.

All done for the new sponsor isn't it? So I'd imagine it will change when a different title sponsor puts money in

I've been hoping to find some decent wall art - either high-quality black & white photos, or nice old event promo posters - for some time, but I'm not quite fancying the range of prints on that site.

I think we should take a moment to remember this beauty.

Without doubt one of the most hideous pieces of automotive styling ever conceived.
