Literally minutes after all the verdicts had been read out I heard someone say something along the lines of "well I still think that if those Scousers had turned up a bit earlier it probably wouldn't have happened." I was already in tears and just walked away, you just can't reason with people like that even in the face of all the evidence, sadly. Some people will always believe what they want to.
Given my hometown I hear a lot of that. Still.

This thread is the perfect antidote for that.

I know a villa fans who's been excellent through it all. We just have to remind ourselves that the world is made up of idiots and human beings. Fortunately as reds we have more of the latter

I used to get so wound up by things written on other club forums. I ended up signing up to one or two of them (forest the main one) to try and put them right but it unfortunately fell mostly on deaf ears.

The thing with the verdict yesterday and all that has come out, particularly since 2012, is that the onus is no longer on us to feel like we have to educate everyone and show what happened. Now EVERYONE has access to the truth, justice is well and truly on its way no matter what a few Internet idiots type up. It felt before like this kind of pig ignorance would prevent the families getting justice however that uphill battle is now over.

When everything is so freely available there are no excuses for these people. I think it's a mixture of football tribalism and a new generation completely unattached from what happened using it to have a go at a club that they don't like. We can just ignore it now and focus on the real fight!

I've looked online and have to say by and large I've been very impressed by how well educated people seem to be on Hillsborough, especially compared to how they were back when I first browsed forums back in 2006. We've come a long way and I think we regrettably need to accept that there are some very stubborn and twisted people out there who will never change their minds. The main thing is that it now feels like the families are getting justice despite the ignorance of some, whereas it felt before they weren't finding justice because of the ignorance of many.

I don't think such people actually 'believe' such things anymore, in any meaningful sense of the word; they can only do so by ignoring or wilfully misreading every published word on the actual facts. But to change their stance now involves a level of self-analysis and admission of deep flaws in their own psyche that they're just not capable of. Therefore it's easier, emotionally and psychologically, for them to stick to their version of events than to admit their own hatred, lack of empathy and stupidity.

In addition to that, there are people for whom none of that matters, ever mattered, or ever will matter. There are people who post solely to get a rise out of others, try to make others react, try to bring others down, etc. And there's really no way to address them or deal with them, as any sort of reaction is all that they were looking for, and is only going to further encourage them. They literally aren't even worth giving a moment's thought, since they don't give a moment's meaningful thought to anything in a proper fashion. Their only goal is "How can I use this to make other people's lives miserable?" That's completely detached from any facts, truth, verdicts, information, etc. about the situation, and as such, none of that is going to make a bit of difference. It's a sad world that we live in where there are people whose sole purpose is to do that to other people - but that's the reality of the world.

We know the truth. We knew the truth long before this. The truth is finally out there for everyone to see. The truth is now legally stated. No one can take that away from us. While I understand the importance of convincing others of the truth for those who can be convinced... but for those who can't, for those who it's not even a possibility, for those who it's not even a consideration, for those whose only goal is to try to make other people's lives miserable - don't let them. We have the truth, and we now have it out in the open and imprinted on the legal system. This is the truth.

Chester FC: Hillsborough inquest verdict marked with commemorative programme cover

By Jim Green - 12:06, 28 Apr 2016 - Updated 12:13, 28 Apr 2016

Blues have designed a special cover to show the club's 'support and compassion' for the families of the 96 victims of the disaster

Chester FC have produced a commemorative programme cover to mark the Hillsborough inquest verdict

Chester FC have produced a special programme cover for this weekend's game against Gateshead marking the Hillsborough inquest verdict.

The commemorative design has been created to show the support of the club and the city for the families of the 96 Liverpool FC fans who lost their lives in the 1989 disaster.

On Tuesday a new inquest ruled the supporters were unlawfully killed after the families campaigned for 27 years for justice for their loved ones.

The initial inquest in 1990 returned a verdict of accidental death and South Yorkshire Police had blamed the behaviour of Liverpool fans for the tragedy.

However, that inquest was quashed in 2012 and a new inquest opened in 2014, which has exonerated supporters and found a series of failures contributed to the a crush at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, including the gross negligence of match commander David Duckenfield.

The ruling is now expected to lead to criminal proceedings against those responsible for the failings.

Featuring the Liverpool crest and the number 96, the cover includes the following message: "Theirs is the greatest victory in the history of football. RIP, the 96. Good night, God bless."

Alan Povey, the club's community director, explained: "The families of the 96 victims who died at Hillsborough finally saw the names of their loved ones cleared of any blame for the events that occurred on April 15, 1989.

"To commemorate this moment, and to show our support and compassion as not only a football club, but as a city, I liaised with our programme designer Martin Huxley who has created a commemorative cover for this Saturday's final game of the season against Gateshead.

The special Chester FC programme cover marking the Hillsborough inquest verdict

"As a club, we have a good relationship with Liverpool FC as their under-21s use the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium to play quite a few of their home games throughout the season.

READ: Five men from Chester and Ellesmere Port who lost their lives

"Chester as city has a connection with the disaster as Anne Williams, mother of Kevin and a huge catalyst for the justice campaign, lived in the city until just before her death in 2013. The family of Jonathon Owens also lived in Chester at the time of his death. There will also be many more affected too."

Tell you what, I'm glad I've only got 3 weeks left at my current company.

Arguing with a mixture of Villa, West Brom, Coventry and Derby fans in the office today, who insist that Liverpool fans were part to blame for "trying to force their way in". Unfortunately, despite these people holding quite good positions within the company, including a director, they seem to have little intelligence if they aren't capable of reading the facts and realising that, following the longest inquest in legal history, going through every scrap of evidence, the jury came to the conclusion that the fans held absolutely no blame whatsoever, yet they still think the fans were part to blame.

Tried getting through to some Forest fans on the Nottingham Post website as well the other day - impossible to reason with imbeciles though unfortunately.

Exactly this yesterday.

Friend of a friend via Facebook posting that the supporters must have been to blame due to the request from Peter Robinson for Liverpool to have the Kop rather than Leppings Lane end on account of higher following.

Therefore, must have been too many bunking in and misbehaving outside as the reasoning seemed to be that it would not have happened to the Forest fans.

1 aspect, taken in isolation and used to perpetuate an old myth.

Easy to ignore all the other factors that came together to cause the disaster in a perfect storm of Police negligence, government attitudes and a crumbling stadium.

Football Supporters' Federation (FSF):

http://www.fsf.org.uk/latest-news/view/hillsborough-verdict-fsf-statement

Quote
After years of evidence and weeks of deliberation the jury at the Hillsborough Inquest has finally returned its verdict.
This morning, the inquest found that the 96 Liverpool fans who died were unlawfully killed.

The jury also said that supporter behaviour did not contribute to the disaster, but there was lack of communication, coordination and command and control by police.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the Football Supporters' Federation, said: "In the aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster many powerful people refused to listen to the voices of supporters who were in attendance on one of football's darkest days.
"Thanks to that wilful blindness those who were accountable managed to evade justice - despite thousands of lives being irrevocably damaged by the disaster.

"For 27 years the friends and families of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough have fought for the truth. For lost loved ones. For fans who suffered terrible physical and mental trauma.

"This verdict would not have happened without their unwavering commitment to justice for the 96. It took an unimaginable amount of dedication and persistence to get to this position - the full exoneration of fans and a recognition that the victims had been unlawfully killed.

"We now call upon the authorities to initiate the criminal and disciplinary proceedings necessary to ensure full accountability."

They also have a blog by Roy Bentham, who survived and who is on their national council, on what the verdict means: http://www.fsf.org.uk/blog/view/hillsborough-and-city-dared-to-fight-by-roy-bentham
"And the voices of the standing Kop still whispering in the wind will salute the wee Scots redman and he will still walk on.
And your money will have bought you nothing."

I don't know how any football supporter, or indeed any decent person wouldn't want to see justice.

It will be interesting to see how fans react to the verdict with regards to the 'victims' chant?
If some choose to carry on this pointless chant I would suggest we as LFC fans applaud them as a) it wasn't our fault and b) it will totally fuck with their collective brain cell.

I don't think what happened this week will make a difference to some people. The truth has been out there for 20 years. Nothing we heard this week is new, I remember watching a drama based on Hillsborough on itv in the mid 90s, I cried right through it, it was about the hicks family who lost 2 girls that day, I have followed events ever since through one cover up after another. I have spoken to people this week who have no interest in the truth, they have  stereotypical views that they are not prepared to change even when they acknowledge that there was a massive cover up by corrupt authorities.
It's disappointing but irrelevant, this is the world we live in.
From a personal point of view, I remember about a decade ago, following another one of these kangaroo court cases thinking this could be the one,it had a lot of media coverage, and then the verdicts came out. Another 2 officers cleared despite of all the evidence, followed by a family spokesman saying how disappointed they are but that they'll keep fighting. Stop fighting I thought, you'll never win, why do this to yourselves, you cant take on the establishment, they'll lie forever. Just accept that evil sometimes win....
Keep fighting Liverpool, you are showing us the way.

And another heartwarming tribute to the Hillsborough victims at Vicarage Road. 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is blasting out of the sound system, with both sets of fans holding their yellow/claret and blue scarves aloft while belting out the Liverpool anthem.

It would be great if we could try to focus on the positives in this threads. There are literally thousands of fans from every team in the land welcoming the verdicts. There are a few dickheads in this world, and supporting every team, but we needn't give them the oxygen when there are so many more good people around.

Hillsborough

From Vanguard Bears Rangers

On the 15th of April 1989, I stood at the terraces of Celtic Park as Rangers played St Johnstone in a Scottish Cup Semi Final. As news started coming through the radio of what was happening at Hillsborough, many of us stood in silence, helpless as the Liverpool support faced the kind of horror our support had in 1971.

At the time, we had no knowledge of the circumstances, and many will recall on that day, there was a small crush amongst our own support as some of the crowds entered the stadium. Fortunately it passed without serious incident.

It may sound silly to say it now, but many football stadiums as recently as 20 years ago were not fit for purpose.

Some football fans, looking through hazy eyes recollect the good times in these stadiums, the feeling of unity, the shared sense of purpose, and atmosphere,  and so on, but it was always tempered with a huge risk, and many of us too young to remember the Ibrox Disaster can probably remember near misses while on the terraces right up until all-seater stadiums became law.

With that risk an ever present, and there already being precedent for such events at football stadiums, the responsibility for managing events and crowds fell to the relevant police force, to the Government, and to clubs.

It seems bizarre now to look back and see fans fenced in to Stadiums as they were back in the 1980s, and the consequences of that at Hillsborough with the horror of fans being squashed to death. It was heartbreaking then, and it’s heartbreaking now.

When “news” reports emerged in the Sun blaming the Liverpool fans, before families had even had funerals, the families had every right to be outraged, and the conduct of certain police officials in the aftermath, and then over the next 27 years was and is nothing short of disgraceful.

The courage and tenacity shown by the families of the victims in this long fight has been nothing short of remarkable, and they should be an example to us all, that authorities should not be allowed to absolve themselves of responsibility for deaths on their watch.

Let’s be clear, everyone makes mistakes, and some mistakes are more deadly than others, but covering up mistakes, and blaming others is unacceptable from those in positions of authority and trust.

I have no doubts that some officers at the scene in Hillsborough will have been dedicated professionals who will have saved lives as the situation escalated, and they do not deserve to be lumped in with the senior officers and officials who engaged in a smear campaign against both the victims and the wider Liverpool support.

That said, this cannot end here, and I believe that now the fight has been vindicated in court, that those responsible for the deaths, and those went to great lengths to cover up the day’s decisions and events should be pursued until they are punished by the courts.

I should re-iterate that mistakes can be made, and should not be punishable, but deliberate deception over 96 deaths should result in a custodial sentence.

I for one wish the families of the victims every success in this pursuit, and hope that authorities across the UK will take their own lessons that football fans should be treated with respect and that we are not animals.

Similarly, I also wish that football fans across this great country of ours learn from the Liverpool support these qualities of resilience, dignity and tenacity that have brought them to their day of truth.

It’s easy to be blasé about (most) football grounds now being seated and safe, but there are still football grounds that don’t fall in to this category, and still football grounds where the approaches involve a degree of channelling fans through bottlenecks to enter the stadiums, so we should all hope that we can trust Police forces to act in the interests of the supporters above everything else, and be prepared to be accountable to those fans.
