World Cup Cattle Market
« on: February 26, 2002, 05:52:15 pm »
The World Cup is looming, and we all know that as with any World Cup, there follows a huge spending spree, from the top clubs in Europe. Liverpool are in definately in the top 8 clubs so lets have a discussion on who may go where?

I belive that there will be a host of offers for Hamman apres this WC. If Owen/Gerrard do well then expect to see huge bids in for those players also. Viera is certain to be moving on and I expect there to be a clamour of Henry.

I hope the dutch players will going on the cheap and that England might be able to pick up a few bargains

Top Tips:

Viera to Real Madrid
Beckham to Barcelona (if veron does not go)
Veron to Lazio/Deportivo/Inter (if Beckham does not go)
Hamman to Bayern Munich
Henry to Inter/AC/Roma
Anelka to Liverpool
Davids to Liverpool
Kluivert to Liverpool

In that order, % chance of those players going to those clubs
98% - reckon so
50% - think he may well go to Spain
95% - think he will definately leave
5% - come of it, we wont sell Didi
5% - think he is happy at Arsenal
60% - depends on his form/attitude in last 10 or so games
5% - can't see that one
40% - is being talked up alot. Depends on Anelka I think.

Imagine that GH would be keen to avoid 'auctions' that you get after the WC, so reckon he will negotiate with players already/before/during.

I have to say that Didi is one of my favourite players we would be weakened without him, but expect to see bids in excess of 15 million from the player most German teams want, not to mention a few Italin and Spanish clubs.

If we are offered 15million do you think we would take it?

I hope not but realism is a real party pooper

O.K. lets change the question?

Who do think might be stupid or crap enough to be leaving the mighty pool after this WC?

None of them gonna be going the WC,
but think Jari, Vladi (please no) & Barmby will move on this summer.
And is diomede still with us?
Think Pegguy will defo leave.

Don't think we'll sign Davids. Don't think we should sign Anelka or Overmars (give Partridge a chance before we sign a wide man) and I don't think we can afford Kluivert.

The ones to leave?

Macca will retire. IMO, he should not take up a position for a younger player anymore. His experience gave us so much when we needed it last season. Now? He's played his part. (But that was one hell of an important one!)
Nielsen, Diomede (never gets a chance) and Heggem (too many other players competing for the same position and injury prone) are the ones that I reckon are on their way. Litmanen could be going to (hope not) but apart from them, I don't think we'll sell anyone.

united won't sell veron or beckham now that the sourpuss is staying on. he's pigheaded about these things. veron is a mistake, but so was andy cole, but ferg finds it hard to admit these things, so i think veron will stay. henry will definitely stay at arsenal - he's negotiating a contract extension at the moment. hopefulyl vieira will leave, there's a good chance of that.

i think we'll hang on to didi - there aren't many players who does what he does, and he's very important to the way we play. if we sold him we'd have to change our system. that's unlikely to happen. we won't buy davids. he's 28, maybe 29 now and would demand massive wages. he's not a houllier type of player i think. houllier wants young players he can mould into his creatures, not angry old fuckeres who've lost their edge and demand 80k a week. for the same reason i'd be surprised to see us sign kluivert, particularly with owen, heskey, baros, litmanen, probably anelka, and the two french kids on the way. it would be madness.

It's just not Ged's style to go for these big-money names at the top of their careers. He picks up mature players that are either available free of charge (Gary Mac, Jari) or younger players that are coming from smaller clubs for (typically) less than 10 million- e.g. JAR, Baros.

So all the talk about Davids, Trezeguet, Wiltord, Kluivert, Overmars is probably bollocks. Just not good business. Although the Kluivert rumour has been around since last summer.

I am sure we will make signings in the summer, but they probably won't be big names. They'll be up and coming players- that we might not have even heard of before. Who had heard of Sami or JAR before?

As for players leaving. Litti must be top of the list. There is no way he will be in a red shirt next season. I'm sure he'll be shipped out in some fashion- even though his contract runs (I read on the official site) until summer 2004, apparently. I figure he'll be sold for 3 mill or less. And I'll be bummed out because I thought he could've been great for us.

The jury is out on Redders until he starts getting into contention for a place again. Ged likes him. He made him club captain. Ged also likes Vladi, so I don't see him going anywhere. I think that he should be kept as well. He still has the potential to be an important player for us. Was crucial to last season's campaign. You don't sell players because of a dip in form. But you should bench them...

I don't think we'll sign Anelka. If he performs well for us his price will rise too high. If he doesn't, then we won't be interested anyway. I think he was strictly a short term signing.

I think Nick Barmby will be moving on, which is a shame. He always (when I've watched him play) attempts to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Fit and on form he'd be in my starting eleven. With JAR moved back to left back.

Have I missed anybody? Oh yeah... Sami Hyypiä will transfer to Transmere Rovers on a free. Next week. My Gran's cat told me.

Liverpool will have agreed a price before a joined, so even if he scored 20 goals before the end of the season, PSG could not change the price.

Top of the list to go:
- Jari
- Redders
- Diomede

Probable:
- Heggem (out for too long - 2 seasons already!)
- Nielsen (depends on Aphaxed really)
- Sjolund (a striker, nuff said)

Unlikely:
- Berger (depends on whether can get back to regular 1st team)
- Smicer
- Barmby

Don't know what'll happen (1):
- Arphexad (if he does not want to be no.3)

Don't know what happened (2) - young guns from the Academy but never played:
- Miles (a striker, so would most probably go)
- Culsaw
- Warnock
- Patridge

And no, we'll not sell Hamann! or Owen, or Gerrard!

I didn't realise Anelka's price had been fixed. Thanks for the information. So if he plays well until the end of the season and displays the right attitude he'll be here next season. And he's a great talent, so I'm happy if that happens.
