I just finished watching his highlights against Brisbane. The kid looks very promising. I'm looking forward to seeing him earn a place. An exciting prospect.

He's super tidy on the ball, looks like we've spent well here.  :)

I no it's only Brisburn but that is an extremely good highlights package. He looks so comfortable on the ball and defended well. I can't wait to see him play again.

Only seen his highlights from today.

Very strong, very quick. Seems a really good passer and reads the game very well and is aggressive. He looks fantastic. I hope we get to see a lot of him in the cups. Far too one footed to play left back though.

He has that amazing ability to turn casually away from players trying to desperately to tackle him, I love that stuff very Busquets esk and to have that calmness at 18 wow.

Like what I've seen from him so far. His versatility is key. Think he'll be a proper CB down the road, but can contribute now at RB or LB. He might even be first choice LB by the end of the season, who knows? Good bit of business, nonetheless.

Very impressed with him. Composed, good passer, extremely quick, athletic and powerful.

Left back obviously won't be his favoured role, being right footed, but it looks like he can do a job there and it might be his best chance of getting action in the first team this season.

Just watching the Brisbane match and I'm very impressed so far... Thought he'd be an academy player but he looks the real deal.

I genuinely wouldn't be looking for another left back. We have Moreno, Maguire, Gomez, Ilori, Enrique then at worst case scenario, Sakho as a back 3 with Flanno to come back on loan from Fiorentina

Yeah, tuned in about ten mins in and wasn't sure who was at left back.  Wasn't expecting Gomez there but he seemed incredibly assured. No mean feat given the step up, the newness and the occasion.

he looks very good... as rb he won't get many games i guess, at least not in the league, since we have Clyne (unless Clyne struggles)  ...as cb he's still too young for that kind of responsibility... as lb he might get games since Moreno isn't very stable, but that lb kid against Thailand was very good too, and he's natural lb

I hate to jump on the hype train, but...imagine if this kid goes on to become a star. As a £3.5m signing from a Championship club, it would certainly point to our scouting team not, in fact, sucking.

Ok he's played 2 friendlies, but astonished by his ability, I've not seen an 18 year old to look so established in defence.

Delighted to say Milner was star turn against Brisbane by some distance but young Gomez was a revelation at left back and purred like a Rolls Royce throughout. Made it look easy. Comfortably the best full back inauguration in a red (white) shirt since Rob Jones at old trafford - and let's not devalue it by saying it was only Brisbane because make no mistake Brisbane on the day were inspired to play as if their lives depended upon it. As good as any Premiership side bar the top half dozen. Worked their socks off throughout..

So I think we definitely have our left back for this season and many seasons to come. Wonderful performance from the lad stemming from genuine classy ability.

As for Origi. A downturn on his opening performance but despite the tight marking and relentless doubling up at times tripling up which did stifle his game/contribution he still managed to maintain his confidence and stuck to the task, showing enough glimpses of his class to  reassure me that he too can prove to be another Rolls Royce in the offing.

Timbo - ever the cock-eyed red optimist but invariably right except when I'm wrong.

'He's staying,' the Northern Irishman told a press conference after a 2-1 victory over Brisbane Roar.
'I've seen enough in this period; you judge young players, I always bring them in and over pre-season have a good idea of whether we're going to keep them or not.
'Seeing him, in particular close at hand and his personality - he'll be staying, he'll get games.'
Rodgers revealed he had wanted to see the versatile defender on the left-hand side but believes he can slot him into numerous positions because of his adaptability.
'He's only 18 years of age, but seeing him play at left-back for the first time, he looked an outstanding athlete and a really good footballer,' Rodgers added.
'I've seen him at centre-half and at right-back, but I wanted to see him at left-back - and I thought he was outstanding.'

That to me sounds like he'll be competing with Moreno for the leftback role this season.

Great athlete. Strong, confident and pacy - looks good coming forward and playing forward and showed decent positional sense when defending. though tbf he'd cause heart attacks if he played some of those cross-filed balls against better opposition.

Very assured start - looks to be a great signing.
Encouraged by this!

It's up to Rodgers like but I don't see any question of competition. I watched Moreno in every game last season. He's nowhere near the level of Gomez in that role either defensively or offensively based on that Rolls royce performance. The lad played like a hybrid of Ramon Wilson, Paul Madeley and Paulo Maldini  yet scarcely broke sweat. Pace, power, skill, calm, collected, commanding, adventurous, game reading, diligent, conscientious. Talk about an old head on young shoulders. An entirely different planet to young Moreno.

Don't get me wrong I've not got a downer on Moreno but that lad definitely looks the real McCoy. Frightening actually. Maybe he's done a Robert johnson and met the devil at the crossroads and sold his soul  to become the finest left back in the history of the game.

Even wearing the No.12, is a sign that both he and the club are confident in his ability.

Trivial maybe, but significant none the less.

I`m tempted to go overboard about him as much as you as I`m really impressed with him so far, the thing is it would be much more productive for our attacking play if our fullbacks were able to attack on the outside rather than cutting in as we need them to provide width so our wide attackers can go inside and support the central striker.

When they cut in we become too narrow and it gets really congested inside but maybe what we can do is have Clyne more aggressive going forward with Gomez staying back a bit to form a back 3 to deal with counter-attacks.

It`s the earliest days when it comes to Gomez but he doesn`t seem to be a panicky type when trying to make clearances and the ball is clearly not alien to him. Those are the two thing essential for a Liverpool defender so I`m happy he`s got the base we need and look out for.

18 years old. £3.5m. Rolls Royce. Somehow this doesn't compute.

Good to see those comments from Brendan about him staying. Delighted by that as he looks like a Rolls-Royce version of Flanagan at LB (and I rate Flanagan too).

My favourite part of his highlight video above was his very Sakho-esque midfield-splitting pass.

Only question I have is what it means for Ilori's chances given that he'd be competing with Gomez and Toure for the 4th CB spot. Hopefully Ilori gets kept this summer and played ahead of Toure though (with Gomez playing FB), but that would be 6-7 defenders capable of playing CB for us at the club at once so its hardly a certainty.

Clyne    Skrtel   Sakho    Moreno
Wisdom Ilori     Lovren   Gomez
             Toure

Looking at that though we look really good now at the back overall going forwards.

The size, age and power athleticism of this lad he it seems like he honestly believes that literally nobody can beat him unless he himself makes a mistake first.

He may even be right. And he seems determined to learn in a hurry so he can eradicate the mistakes and become the perfect defender.

But hes very raw very young he will make mistakes he will get tricked. Spotting him into some euro games or milk cup outings is probably his first realistic destination.

Makes a damn good first impression no doubt.

Gomez is huge. Very tall, looks well built and quite fast. He has no fear on the ball too. Looks like he is a big talent and hopefully he can make the most of it. Looking forward to seeing how Illori does when he gets back in the fold as well. Another huge talent Imo. Makes really good players look average.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan.
