Klopp hails Robertson's 'incredible personal journey'

Jürgen Klopp has paid tribute to the 'incredible personal journey' undertaken by Andy Robertson prior to sealing his move to Liverpool today.

And the Reds boss believes the defender's meteoric rise proves he has the necessary characteristics to ensure he continues progressing at Anfield.

Just four years ago, Robertson was earning a living as a supermarket cashier and working at Hampden Park while playing in the fourth tier of Scottish football with amateur outfit Queen's Park.

His performances for the Glasgow club earned him a move to the Premiership with Dundee United, where he continued to excel and gained PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year recognition before sealing a switch to Hull City.

Robertson has since established himself as a capable Premier League performer, leading to 15 senior Scotland caps and his move to LFC.

For Klopp, the never-say-die attitude displayed by the full-back en route to Anfield shows that there is even more to come.

"For Andrew this is another big step on what has been a quite incredible personal journey in a very short space of time," he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I love his story; where he has come from professionally to reach this point.

"When you speak to him it is clear why he makes his progress. He has a burning love for playing football - he really loves the game.

"His attitude is outstanding - absolutely outstanding. His talent and skills - also very, very good.

"He has experience of this competition, the Premier League, and he has the mentality and quality to get even better.

"I know our environment will benefit him and help him push himself even more than he has already. This is a player who does not limit his ambition, I think."

Klopp regularly used the versatile James Milner in Robertson's preferred position of left-back last season as the Reds sealed a return to the Champions League.

And the manager says he is now spoiled for choice in that area as he gears his squad up for a more packed fixture list this time around.

"This addition gives us fantastic competition in the left full-back position now," he added.

"Obviously, James Milner did very well for us last season there and can play most positions on the football pitch. Alberto Moreno looks really good in pre-season and we have Jon Flanagan back, who can play left or right full-back.

"This signing strengthens us at full-back and I'm really pleased about this."

Good luck to the lad, hope he turns out good, we could really use a quality left back.

Now the FB positions are boxed off just like DM and striker ones, now onto CB, CM and maybe a wide-forward. Only a couple of players more needed to build a very nice and competitive squad.

Average lean. FSG cheaping out again, we need players with world class leans like Clyne. I'm tired of FSG buying all these average young players and hoping they'll lean better when they sign their next contract.

haha,

Well I have never been more neutral about a signing before. On paper it's not exactly a good or bad signing. Just have to wait and see how he does. Very much doubt he'll be anywhere near first choice to begin with. Let's hope he improves and does better than Moreno.

Very impressive lean
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Think BabuYagu has a lot to do with the good reception this is getting here so far. A few weeks ago in the Robertson thread (before the glorious stats analysis by Babu) there weren't many here who were favourable to this move.... Actually almost makes me think that Babu has been hired by the FSG PR department...  ::) ::)  ;D

Seriously though, I'm delighted we've finally signed him. Said back when Klopp joined that Robertson would be a perfect fit for his style and I think he'll be a big success, so much so that I think this will look like a steal at £8m a few months down the line (in fact in my opinion it already does when compared to other transfers in the PL).

Loves a one-two and bursting up the pitch, doesn't shy away from tackles, and has pace... which are the ingredients of a good Klopp fullback. Not to mention his "outstanding attitude" which is undoubtedly a big reason why Klopp has signed him.

Think he'll do well here, having a left-footer at left back is going to have a big impact on our attacking play.  If we do manage to land Keita and VVD for crazy money, then going for someone at this price makes a lot of sense.

Nervous lean though.

Hopefully will grow into a great LB for the club.

Sell off Moreno now, have no need for him in the squad anymore.

Milner/Robertson - LB
Clyne/Trent/Flanagan - RB

Ranking of full backs in Klopp's mind?

Ranking of full backs in Klopp's mind?
Robertson said in the interview (when asked about his goals for the next 12 months) that his aim is to be a starting XI player, and I think he has a very good chance to usurp Milner given that he offers a more natural left-footed option to stretch opponents in a low-block in particular.

That said, it's probably most likely that Milner is the starting LB at the start of the season as Robertson gets up to speed tactically, but as the season progresses I think Robertson will gradually get more responsibility. I can see the Milner vs Robertson question being a common topic of discussion this season, but I'd imagine that Klopp is just delighted to have two competent left backs who he can trust and rotate through the season.

As for Flanagan, might sound harsh but I think he's just on the tour to make up numbers. Klopp wants to play 2 different XI's each half in games, and Flanagan gives the team cover in case one of the other fullbacks are injured or need some rest. I'd be very surprised if Flanagan is still in the squad when the window shuts.

Cracking. With all the hohar about VVD and Kieth this one snuck in almost. Delighted we have got a LB in.

Decent price.

Milner will be first choice still I'm guessing?

Yes and no. I think Milner would get the important games as such, but there should be plenty of rotation IMO mate. Signing this lad though does give us the opportunity to have an extra body in Midfield with Milner.
We may sign Salah, but I'll show my arse in the middle of town if we sign one of VVD or Keita. Not gonna happen.
