I think as a result the humour seem to be a mix of realism and surrealism with a large dollop of cultural and literary references that weren't simply based on things like two year old music videos, which gave the show a wider range of popular and middlebrow cultural ideas mixed in with social commentary and stories with everyday resonance (i.e. losing the company dental plan; having to borrow money from family members etc).

A video has been created that showcases many of those movie references featured, spliced alongside the films that inspired them.

And if he can teach a class, HE can teach a class!

God the early episodes that were Homer or Burns-centric were always 9/10 at least. Mountain of Madness, Rosebud, A Star is Burns, Homer the Smithers.. all great episodes.

I'm inordinately fond of Homer the Smithers.  Especially Homer taking phone messages:
'You have 30 minutes to move your car. You have 10 minutes to move your car. Your car has been moved and crushed into a cube. You have 30 minutes to move your cube'

Homer making breakfast for Burns always makes me laugh.

Mr. Burns: You must find the Jade Monkey before the next full moon.
Smithers: Actually sir we found the Jade Monkey; it was in your glove compartment.
Mr. Burns: And the road maps and ice scraper?
Smithers: They were in there too sir.
Mr. Burns: Excellent, it's all falling into place.

I didn't realise that Moe was based on Rich Hall....

A friend of Groening from way back apparently..... (Heard him interviewed about it last week)..

Makes sense really, they look and sound very similar...

“Generosity always pays off. Generosity in your effort, in your work, in your kindness, in the way you look after people and take care of people. In the long run, if you are generous with a heart, and with humanity, it always pays off.”

Went to watch Wigan play the other day, they have a midfielder named Max Power.

I was just quoting that episode all day

"there's three ways to do things, the right way, the wrong way and the Max Power way!"

"Hey, Great name!" ,
"Thanks. I got it off a hair dryer"
We already have shit in the country, and the game of Liverpool fills life with joy. Thanks

The campaigning at the end where he follows the duck then sits on the knee of the statue asking for a list of presents.

Great reference today, out of nowhere, in the Sakho thread:

I heard Sakho went into a restaurant and ate everything in the restaurant and they had to close the restaurant.

For the NFL fans out there

The episode where the kids at school get snowed in. At the start of the episode Homer, comfortably sitting down to watch a Green bay - denver broncos game, gets interrupted by his family. "Where are we going?" "We are going to the circus to watch the french-canadian Cirque du soleil" replies lisa. " We've had the tickets since Septembrè"

"Awwwwo but I wanted to watch Brett Favrè"
