Liverpool Ladies boss Matt Beard has outlined his plans to revamp his side's fortunes for the better next season.

With just two games left to play in the Women's Super League this term, the manager, who has only been in charge for a month, is in the process of assessing the current squad.

There is no relegation from the WSL this season, so Beard is relishing the opportunity to build a new-look LFC Ladies squad for the future.

"We've got two games to go in the season - away at Arsenal then at home to Doncaster Belles - and I have been assessing the current squad and seeing which areas of the team need improving," Beard told Liverpoolfc.com.

"I have got a strong idea now about who we will be looking at keeping at the club and who we will be releasing, but there are these two games left for players to force our arm.

"We are completely rebuilding Livepool Ladies. It will be an exciting few months after the end of the season with the players we are looking to bring in, as we need to be in a position to challenge the likes of Arsenal, Birmingham and Everton at the top half of the table rather than scrapping at the bottom.

"I wouldn't have relocated up to Merseyside from London if I didn't think that we had the tools to improve the ladies team at Liverpool. We have got fantastic training facilities, the Academy staff have been brilliant with us and in my opinion this is definitely the football club to be at.

"Instant success isn't going to happen overnight. Arsenal have had an established side for years and they signed some world-class players at the start of the season to add to an already strong squad, so it does take a little time.

"We are looking at bringing in players from abroad and not just UK based. The plan for next year is to build a squad that is capable of challenging at the top."

Reflecting on his first month in the job, Beard admits results have been indifferent with defensive and fitness issues being a main catalyst for that.

He added: "In the two friendly games I saw the team play prior to taking this job, fitness was a big problem and I could count on one hand the amount of players that were at the fitness level required to play in the Women's Super League, which was disappointing to see.

"I haven't got a recognised centre-back at the club and that is one of the big reasons why we have been conceding a lot of goals, so it's been a case so far of having to work with what we have got.

"From the three league games we have played since I came in I think we are making progress slowly but surely, and the fitness is improving.

"The players are working hard for me and they have been unlucky with some of the results, apart from some of our defending during the 5-2 defeat by Birmingham last Sunday. That was the most disappointed I have been so far to be honest.

"We created so many chances against Birmingham but didn't take them and then conceded some bad goals.

"We played really well against Everton and should have won but lost the game when they scored twice in extra-time.

"Going forward, we are looking good but it's just defensively that we are struggling and we will sort that problem."

Beard strengthened the back line last week when he signed goalkeeper Sarah Quantrill from his former club Chelsea.

Explaining the reason for the capture, Beard added: "Aroon Clancy has been struggling throughout the season with an injury and Nicky Davies strained her back last week and is away now with the RAF, so we needed another stopper.

"Sarah is a fantastic goalkeeper and she has got a great future in the game. I am delighted she is on board with us because I think she will be one of the best goalkeepers in the country in the future.

"She reminds me a bit of Pauline Cope, who was the best goalkeeper the women's game has ever produced."

Not specifically LLFC or WSL related so excuse me, but...

England's final Euros qualifier against Croatia is live on BBC 2 today. Kick off is at 5pm.

They have already guaranteed themselves at least a place in the play offs, but 3 points today will see them qualify automatically as group winners for the tournament in Sweden next summer. None of our girls are in the team, but last time England played Croatia they won 6-0, so anybody who fancies it should at least see goals.

Quite entertaining this.......

......with the WSL getting a good plug at half time......

.....I'm not too worried about us only having 5 points from 12 games with -15 GD, it's a rebuilding year ;)

Oh and highlight of the game so far is this, with the score at 2-0:

"Some younger fans there shouting WE WANT TEN!"

"They need to learn to count. It's THREE next......"

:lmao

It's a shame they couldn't get 10, but they wouldn't have been far off that number if the Croatian keeper hadn't been making great saves all game. They did get a third though. 3-0 FT.

And that means they will be off to Sweden in July. Hopefully we can go one better this time and actually win it.

Reds Beaten by Arsenal

A weakened Liverpool Ladies side travelled to Meadow park to face Super League leaders Arsenal Ladies, who are currently within touching distance of securing the league title.

Arsenal began the brighter side, but a Liverpool comeback looked like a possibility when a fantastic dipping volley from Katie Brussell almost inspired her side.

Lillie Billson started the game strongly, proving herself a handful for the Arsenal defence after her trickery opened up a shooting opportunity for Katie Brussell, but her shot was comfortably saved.

The first Arsenal goal came from a resultant corner after Sarah Quantrill denied the initial shot  from Katie Chapman with a fine save. Rachel Yankey, who picked up her record breaking 120th England cap midweek, saw her  in-swinging corner headed home by Chapman.

Liverpool’s recent spell of conceding multiple goals in quick succession blighted the side again, when Chapman clinched a second with a long range effort beating the Liverpool keeper.

The home side continued to press, but could only manage to hit the woodwork, with Yankey’s effort glancing Quantrill’s near post quickly followed by Jordan Nobbs’ effort rebounding of the bar.

The Reds then pushed for a goal of their own,  but shots from Billson and Culvin came to no avail.

The second half began in a similar fashion to the first, with Arsenal having a goal disallowed for an infringement on  Quantrill after a scuffle from a corner.

Katie Brussell’s goal in the second half was certainly one to remember, as her long-range volley soared over Emma Byrne in the Arsenal net, and inspired her side to push for what would have been an impressive comeback.

After being brought on for Emily Gielnik, Hannah Keryakoplis was gifted  a chance  to equalise after she pounced on a poor goal kick from Emma Byrne and found herself one on one, but keeper quickly  recovered and squandered her effort.

Sarah Quantrill, who is making just her second appearance for the club, was called into action again when she tipped Danielle Carter’s spectacular effort over the bar. Katie Chapman was denied a hat-trick from the resulting corner when her headed effort was kept out by the woodwork.

Arsenal extended their lead the 88th minute, when Ellen White knocked home a cross from Kim Little after some admirable trickery in the box.

Sophie Jones was inches away from reducing the gap to one just a minute later, but her effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far Arsenal post.

Kelly Jones’ determination continued right to the end when she launched herself into the path of Carter’s thumping effort to block the shot and see the ball cleared.

But Ellen White put the tie past any doubt when she showed composure to pick her spot  in Quantrill’s net right on full time following a late spell of Arsenal pressure.

The Reds manager Matt Beard said that there was many positives to take from the game, and was probably the best he’s seen the side play since taking charge.

However he believes his sides fitness may have let them down during the final stages:

“One of the biggest problems we’ve had since I’ve been here is the squads fitness levels. We had lots of players out injured and players with knocks who played today. When they got the third and fourth goals it was mainly because of the players tiredness.”

He added: “ But we should be proud of what we’ve put in today and proved we can compete with the top teams in the country.”

The ladies next - and final WSL game of this season - comes in the form of a home clash with Doncaster Rovers Belles on Sunday 7th October – KO 2pm.

Final Score: Arsenal Ladies 4 – 1 Liverpool Ladies

Official Attendance - 464

cheers for the updates Kellan.

Hopefully Arsenal will make sure of the title this week by putting a few past Doncaster Belles - and so we'd stay up if we beat Doncaster the week after :)

No need to worry about relegation mate, because it doesn't happen. I knew there was something important I had forgotten to add to the round-up post!

Right now it's just the 8 teams we currently have for a couple of seasons while the league finds it's feet (it's only two years old). That's why we effectively wrote off the second half of this season to concentrate on next year. And everything coming out of the club suggests that next year and beyond will see a pretty unrecognisable Liverpool Ladies. This head-start that we've given ourselves could be invaluable for 2013.

The FA have recently announced that a WSL division 2 will be created in time for the start of the 2014 season. Promotion and relegation will be suspended for the first year, but it will kick in eventually.

Birmingham only managing a draw meant that Arsenal kicked off against Doncaster knowing they'd already won the title... for the 9th time in a row.

Reds lose on final day

The final Women’s Super League game of the season ended in a frustrating defeat for the Reds, yet despite creating plenty of chances failed to find the back of the net.

Liverpool started the brighter of the two sides in their final league game, with Lillie Billson stealing possession straight from a Doncaster kick off and setting up Katie Brusell, only for her shot to be saved.

The forward again dispossessed the visitor's defence just minutes later, but this time Kelly Jones saw her effort kept out by Mary Earps in the away net.

The first real Doncaster attack came in the 20th minute, but the combined defensive efforts of Samantha Chappell and Vicky Jones saw the ball eventually travel wide for a goal kick.

The first Doncaster goal came against the run of play, when the visitors were awarded a corner from a superb Nicki Harding tackle. Aine O' Gorman's long delivery was met first-time by Beth England, who sweetly volleyed home to give the visitors an advantage.

Lillie Billson almost caught the visitors sleeping not long after play restarted, but her shot soared across the face of the goal and wide of the far post.

Emily Gielnik then replaced Katie Brusell just before the break, with the winger carrying a knee injury.

Another super challenge from Nicki Harding just before the interval proved enough to keep O' Gorman from going into half time two up. The striker found herself seemingly one on one with Sarah Quantrill, but a last-ditch foot-in from Harding prevented her from getting a shot away and the ball travelled to safety.

Liverpool started the second half as they did the first, with substitute Emily Gielnik having the first chance of the half, but despite beating two defenders her shot was easily stopped by Earps.

Michelle Evans' wide free-kick caused havoc in the Doncaster box, but the Reds failing to capitalise on some uncertain defending and the ball was eventually cleared down-field.

Doncaster almost doubled their advantage but their captain Leandra Little's header from a corner was just over Quantrill's bar.

Cheryl Foster replaced Kelly Jones in the 59th minute.

The reds came closest to equalising on the 63rd minute when Lillie Billson's through ball found substitute Foster just inside the Doncaster box. Foster managed to get a shot away, but a good save from Earps denied her an equaliser.

Billson almost rippled the net 15 minutes from time when she found herself just outside the Rovers box. After turning back inside past a defender and onto her stronger right foot she struck the ball sweetly enough but it sailed just past the top corner, inches away from what would have been a spectacular goal.

Matt Beard's last change came on the 75th minute when Sophia Riccio replaced Nicki Harding.

Doncaster almost doubled their advantage when O' Gorman squared across the 6-yard box to Beth England whose sliced effort drifted wide of an open goal.

Cheryl foster?s pass to Billson 10 minutes from time gave the striker another chance to level, but her shot drifted just wide. Liverpool again came agonisingly close, when another fantastic delivery from the left-boot of Michelle Evans was met with a strong header from Chappell, but yet again Earps denied the Reds an equaliser.

Doncaster looked sure to extend their lead just 3 minutes from time when O' Gorman found herself in space on the attack and with support, only to be denied by the superb tracking of Vicky Jones who tackled the striker and cleared to safety.

A late surge then ensued with Hannah Keryakoplis forcing a corner out of Earps, to which even Quantrill joined the attack. But the Reds were left sparse at the back and from the resultant counter attack, O' Gorman found herself with a clear run on goal, and chipped over Quantrill who had tracked back, to put the tie beyond doubt.

This means the Reds finish the season in 8th place and will be looking to build for next season.

Final Score: Liverpool Ladies 0-2 Doncaster Rovers Belles.

It's already time to turn our attention to next season:

Liverpool Ladies FC have signed USA international defender Whitney Engen.

The 24-year-old, who has two international caps, will join Matt Beard's side in January ahead of the 2013 Women's Super League season.

Engen spent 2012 playing with USL W-League team Pali Blues.

Prior to that she turned out for the Western New York Flash in the US WPS League, where she was named WPS Defender of the Year and helped lead the team to the 2011 championship.

Engen said: "I have always been very interested in playing in the WSL so when the opportunity arose, I took it.

"Joining a club with such a legacy and impact in the world of football made the decision easy. I want to thank everyone at Liverpool who worked hard on my behalf to make this happen. I am very excited for next season."

Playing for the University of North Carolina, the centre-back was a First Team All-American in 2009 and named Defensive MVP of the College Cup.

Beard said: "I am delighted that Whitney has decided to join Liverpool Ladies FC.

"Whitney is a world-class central defender and I've made known since my time here that our back four is an area we are looking to strengthen.

"Hopefully this is the first of many signings for an exciting future for Liverpool Ladies."

Engen's agent, Faudlin Pierre, added: "Whitney had various offers from other teams around Europe, but the chance to play for Liverpool and the fact that the English WSL league is stable and continuing to grow at an impressive pace were ultimately the key factors." - liverpoolfc.com

Liverpool Ladies have confirmed 10 players have been released following the end of the 2011-12 Women's Super League season earlier this month.

Defenders Vicky Jones, Alex Culvin, Nicki Harding and Danielle Lea, midfielders Amie Flemming, Kelly Jones and Sophie Jones, forwards Cheryl Foster and Emily Gielnik, and goalkeeper Aroon Clansey have all left the club as coach Matt Beard begins shaping up his squad ahead of next season.

Beard said: "I would like to thank each player for there commitment since my appointment in August. It was a tough decision but the squad needs rebuilding and I wish each and every player the best in the future." - liverpoolladiesfc.com

Liverpool Ladies welcome Tessa Morris as head of sports science and performance for the 2013 season.

Morris studied sport and exercise science at Loughborough University before spending time at Liverpool John Moores Univeristy and developing an interest in football physiology. She has been a sport scientist for Lucozade over the past five years, during which time she continued to complete post-graduate qualifications and her UEFA B coaching licence. - liverpoolladiesfc.com

Not strictly LLFC related, but I felt like posting this anyway because it appears to have gone under the radar somewhat.

The FA have today launched something called 'Game Changer'. It is their 5 year plan for the future of the women's game.
The FA's plan calls for:
1. The creation of an Elite Performance Unit and the appointment of a head of elite development to develop the best young players.
2. Delivering a new commercial strategy for women's football to include more broadcast coverage to elevate the profile of the women's game.
3. Expanding the FA Women's Super League by introducing a second division in 2014 to enable promotion and relegation.
4. Grow participation and fanbase.

I won't post anything in more detail because like I said, it's not strictly LLFC - but those who wish to read more about Game Changer can do so here, or go straight to The FA's pdf booklet about it here.

----------

And while I'm posting I might as well add that @OptaJoe has this week released some stats for WSL season 2. We get a mention twice:

117 – Liverpool Ladies allowed their opponents more shots on target against them than any other team and conceded the most goals (35). Open.
47% - Liverpool Ladies scored the highest % of set piece goals in the Women's Super League, ahead of Lincoln Ladies (42%). Practice.

You can read the rest of the stats here.

(I think that's everything. The off-season is boring me already)

Liverpool Ladies have signed England centre-back Gemma Bonner.

Bonner has represented England at U17, U19, U20 and U23 level prior to her first senior-team call-up in March's UEFA Euro 2013 qualifier away to Croatia.

The 21-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Chelsea, where she played in the 2012 FA Cup final. Prior to that she played for her home town club Leeds United, with whom she was a League Cup winner in 2010 and an FA Cup runner-up in 2008.

Gemma said: "I am delighted to be joining Liverpool at a key time in my football career and have been greatly influenced by the commitment that Liverpool FC are showing towards women's football. When the opportunity to work with Matt again came I was pleased to take it and I am excited for the challenge ahead."

Gemma will pair up with US International Whitney Engen in central defence to give Liverpool Ladies a strong defensive core.

Liverpool manager Matt Beard said: "I'm delighted to be working with Gemma again. During my time at Chelsea she was consistent week in week out. Off the back of her hard work she was called into the England senior squad.

"She is a fantastic defender and I have no doubt in my mind that she will go onto be a regular in the England squad. She will be a great asset to Liverpool Ladies FC." - liverpoolfc.com

Liverpool Ladies complete their backroom team

After Matt Beard’s appointment as full-time manager in August, LFC Ladies have completed assembling their backroom team in preparation for the 2013 season.

The Ladies are pleased to have appointed Donna Wortley as video analyst and Dan Wakefield as opposition analyst, and it will be their responsibility to provide match statistics and video footage to break down the performance of ourselves and the opposition. This follows the recent additions of assistant coaches Luke Swindlehurst and Jo Broadhurst; goalkeeper coach Joe Potts,  head of sports science and performance Tessa Morris and head physio Kathryn Wise.

Matt Beard said:  “For the new professional approach we are taking to the women’s game it is important to leave no stone unturned and fully analyse yours and the oppositions strengths and weaknesses, we are now in a position to do that.” - liverpoolladiesfc.com

Liverpool Ladies have signed England midfielder Fara Williams and striker Natasha Dowie from local FA WSL rivals Everton Ladies.

Williams, 28, has 107 caps and 36 goals for her country, and netted 10 times for the Blues last season.

The former Toffees captain, regarded as one of the most gifted players the England set-up has ever produced, moves after eight years at the club.

Former Charlton striker Dowie, 24, spent five years with Everton.

Williams has been a key player for Hope Powell's Three Lions for more than a decade and was named FA Young Player of the Year in 2002, FA International Player of the Year in both 2007 and 2009, and FA Players' Player of the Year in 2009.

The former England skipper earned her 100th cap in the Cyprus Cup against Switzerland in March 2012 , scoring the only goal of the game.

Dowie, niece of former West Ham and Northern Ireland striker Iain, suffered from injuries last season. But two of her four goals came in the 2010 FA Cup final victory over Arsenal.

The former Watford and Fulham forward made her England debut in a World Cup qualifier against Turkey in November 2009 and has three caps.

Liverpool hope to challenge the all-conquering Arsenal for honours next season. - bbc.co.uk/sport

I thought our Ladies team was bad, how have they managed to get Williams? Do they pay good wages or something, she's one of the only women football players I know, her, Kelly and Yankey.

It would appear that somebody within the club has decided that a change in attitude and ambition was needed with the ladies team from now on. If you ask me it's long overdue. Fans have been sensing for a while that the club were satisfied with just simply having a ladies team, and that has never quite felt like the Liverpool way of doing things. If the men's team are striving to be the best, the ladies team should be also. So from next season onwards we're here for the trophies. #wecomenottoplay or whatever it is.

I'm a fast runner.

I'll almost certainly be at the Bristol (away) game, will try to get to Libpool for a few. Any news on venue for next season? Still Skem?

So from next season onwards we're here for the trophies.
"Liverpool (Ladies) FC exists to win trophies."

Got a ring to it, that......

Liverpool Ladies have signed England youth international Lucy Bronze from Women's Super League rivals Everton.

The 21-year-old is the third player to leave the Blues and cross Merseyside after Fara Williams and Natasha Dowie made the move earlier in November .

The former Sunderland full-back was at Everton for two years and scored two goals last season, one in a 2-1 win over Liverpool in Widnes.

Bronze has played for England at all levels including the under-23's. bbc.co.uk/sport

Liverpool Ladies midfielder Fara Williams says the Reds were the only team she wanted to join when she left Everton earlier in November.

The England international made the controversial move following eight years with their Merseyside rivals.

"I didn't even consider any other team, I'm not going to lie," Williams told BBC Sport.

"Liverpool were the team I wanted to join and people knew that. It's happened for me and I'm happy now."

She added: "It was hard, I knew that leaving Everton and going to Liverpool meant there would be things said [about me] but I'm settled on Merseyside and I don't want to be travelling [anywhere else] and I want to be training more."

The 28-year-old has 107 caps and 36 goals for England, but did lose her place in the starting line-up and only made the bench for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.

Williams ended the 2012 Women's Super League season as Everton's top scorer with 10 goals, but said: "I think I've need a new challenge for a while and that has shown in my play.

"At the age I'm at, I didn't want to be travelling and Liverpool came up with an offer and is something I didn't look back on.

"Everton will always be in my heart. The things Mo and Keith (Marley) did for me while I was there are beyond words to explain, they helped me in my career but in my personal life too.

"As my football has shown in the last couple of years, it's dipping and at the age I'm at I can't afford it to dip. Myself and Everton have agreed I needed a new challenge, so I'm looking forward to it." - bbc/sport

I thought she was going to slip up half way through and name some of our unannounced signings, but she didn't and just said 'American girls' instead - which is interesting enough because we've only signed one so far.

Liverpool Ladies are delighted to announce the addition of England U23 international defender Lucy Bronze and German U20 midfielder Nicole Rolser.

Rolser was part of Germany's U19 European Championship-winning side of 2011 and the U20 World Cup runners-up team of 2012. The 20-year-old has previously played for German outfits Bad Neuenahr and VfL Sindelfingen.

Bronze (below) has gained England caps at all levels from U17 to U23 and featured in the Three Lions U19 European Championship-winning side of 2009.

The 21-year-old has previously played for English clubs Blyth Town, Sunderland and Everton and was awarded player of the match in the FA Women's Cup final of 2009 during the Black Cats' 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

During the summer of 2009, Bronze (below) played in the US, where she became the first British player to win an NCAA Cup.

She told Liverpoolfc.com: "After much deliberation about my future, I decided to join Liverpool Ladies as a fresh start and a new challenge.

"I'm looking forward to joining Whitney Engen, an old teammate of mine. She is someone I know I can learn a lot from and someone I look up to as a player."

Rolser (below) added: "I'm looking forward to a new challenge both personally and within football in a new country. Liverpool Ladies has a very professional set-up. I'm sure it is possible for Liverpool to build for a long period of success."

Manager Matt Beard said: "I'm delighted that Lucy has decided to sign for Liverpool. Lucy is one of the best young defenders in England, she can play anywhere in the back four and was one of Everton's most consistent performers last season.

"Lucy is an U23 England international and I'm confident that she will be in the senior squad before too long. We are building a strong squad and our defence is starting to take shape and will offer good competition for places.

"Nicole is a fantastic signing for not only Liverpool but for the FA WSL. She is a quick and tricky winger, who can player either right or left. She is a German youth international who has won the European Championships and been a World Cup runner-up, she will bring flair and pace to our side and I for one can't wait to work with her."

10 players out - 6 players in so far. Simple maths will tell us we should still have more to come. So yep, we're basically signing a whole new team.

It's a good job they play with names and numbers on their backs.

The draw for next seasons Continental Cup has been made:

Group 1: Arsenal, Birmingham, Bristol, Lincoln
Group 2: Doncaster, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool

First round of games 23-24 March.
Each team has three group games. The group winner and group runner up both go through to the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be group winner vs opposing group runner up (home advantage for the group winner)

----------

I hope I don't jinx anything by saying this but that's a very kind group for us. I think I can see at least a semi-final on the horizon and I wouldn't have thought that 12 months ago! Nice extra derby to add to the fixture list too. What more could we ask for?

Certainly the kinder draw but with the added spice of playing Matt's old team and also given half of our team wore blue last season the Everton fixture is also interesting ;)

Assuming we are runners up in our group, it sets up potentially a semi against Arsenal at Arsenal. Tough break. Would prefer us to win the group and play Bristol at Bristol!

(Not least cos I can then go and watch :wave )

Sweden international Louise Fors is the latest signing for Liverpool Ladies.

Fors has played for Sweden at all international levels and has 24 full caps.

The 23-year-old midfielder is currently playing for Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia.

Previously she has played for Swedish clubs Hammarby IF DFF, AIK and Linköping FC as well as the Spanish club RCD Espanyol.

She will join the Liverpool squad at the start of February 2013.

On signing her contract, Fors said: "When I heard that Liverpool were interested and I got to see their future plan, it felt like the right next step in my career. I look forward to starting to train with the team and representing the club."

Liverpool Ladies manager Matt Beard commented: "We are delighted to bring Louise to Liverpool.

"Louise can play central or left midfield. She is a great passer of the ball and a dead ball specialist.

"She has played professionally in Sweden and Spain and adds more strength, depth and quality to our squad." liverpoolfc.com

Great to see we are investing in the ladies.  The women's game is growing rapidly and going to be big, so good to be keeping up with it.

Looking forward to seeing Rosler and Bronze in action!

Couple of articles with quotes which I won't post in full because they're too long:

Engen takes her U.S. team bid to Liverpool - "The opportunity to play abroad, especially in a city like Liverpool, is just so enticing that I couldn’t really say no."
Star performer of the week | Louise Fors

---

Highlights of Nicole Rolser's last game for Bad Neuenahr can be seen here. The build-up to her goal starts at 1:20. And it's Rolser #9, not Rolser #11 who is her sister.
I actually saw a full Bad Neuenahr game a couple of days after it was announced that Nicole had signed, and yes I did spend the first half watching the wrong Rolser...

---

Sarah Quantrill, Danielle Gibbons, Gemma Bonner, Lucy Bronze, Natasha Dowie, and Fara Williams have all made the cut for the next England camp in January.

---

And I think that is everything, so update concluded :wave
