It really was an extraordinary thing. He was the most expensive British player of all-time back then. He set all kinds of records and his legacy over there is unbelievable. He's an almost mythical creature and seems to be universally respected by all who played with and against him.

There was Keegan at Hamburg of course, but If we're talking Britain and Ireland Liam Brady is well up there. Won two Scudetto's with Juve, even scored the penalty that clinched them the title in 81. He would later go on to have distinguished spells with Sampdoria and Inter.

Was that the Cup Winner's Cup Final of 1997 (PSG knocked us out in the Semis?). One of the PSG defenders appears to be on fire!

Fairly sure it was the quarters, James had a howler in Paris.

Semis I think, Brann Bergen in the Quarters (where Fowler scored that great goal in the Away Leg). Weren't many rounds to play in that competition!

Apologies for this being from the Fail but I think they call it almost right here...Maccas Euro cups and Lamberts win I think should push both of them higher..but Keegan with 2 Euro footballer of the year awards gives him the position behind Charles for sure

By the way, how did Keegan win the European Footballer of the Year award in those 2 Hamburg years, especially the first one? They finished 10th in 1977-78 and scored 12 goals. It was a World Cup year and Holland got to the final while England didn't even qualify. (The award is for the calendar years so our 1976-77 season doesn't factor into his 1978 win, if I'm correct).
What am I missing?

Another good question
The 78 one doesn't seem to make that much sense on Hamburgs resultsunless they factor in how well he finished for us in 77. Like the fact he got sent off in his first season for decking someone!
Unless he was just head and shoulders above everyone as a player
79 makes sense though..bundesliga winner and euro cup runner up..am I right in thinking they outplayed Forest?

Right you are, of course. Still the fact that it takes genuine effort to remember them is damning all to itself. For all the talent England has produced over the years they make the Italian mama's boys look like fearless adventurers!
