Eeyore:
For me Rodgers was a poor judge of players but I have a great deal of sympathy regarding how he was treated. He quite simply could not have made it clear that he didn't want to work within the structure Liverpool wanted to create.

Fab four: Rodgers rejected Liverpool three times before saying yes

New manager only agreed to move from Swansea after Anfield chiefs ditched the plan to have him working under a director of football

Brendan Rodgers accepted the Liverpool job only after telling the club's owners: "It's my way or no way".

The new Anfield boss revealed he refused the job THREE times, until they agreed with his vision that he would be in charge and not work under a director of football.

The American owners have long stated their desire to implement a continental model based around a sporting director, and had approached Dutch legend Louis Van Gaal to fill the role.

But Rodgers was adamant in his vision that he would take full control of football matters, and he insisted he was ready to stick with that principle even if it cost him the chance to take the job.

"I wanted clarity that I would be in charge of football matters - and I didn't agree until after talking three times about it," he explained.

"If it was anything other than that then I couldn't have said yes. I wanted to make sure that control the team, control the work and then what we have underpinning that is a team all with one vision and one mentality.

"If you are the manager of the club and someone else tells you to have that player, it doesn't work.

"I've had total clarity with that from the owners so I've got confidence that that will remain. It was for this reason that I didn't want to be sat up there, say what I've said and then in three weeks time Louis Van Gaal walks in the door - it does not work.

"You need to know yourself. And I know myself. I know what makes me work well and that wouldn't have been a model I would have succeeded in."

Liverpool have confirmed they will now work towards creating a different model with no one man taking the role of sporting director, but up to four fulfilling different roles.

Rodgers though, will co-ordinate all those roles and make the final decisions on everything... including transfers, which he insisted was vital to him taking the job.

"The one thing I have recognised by talking to these people here is a real honesty. They had advice and wanted a certain model, but I don't think it was something they were set on," he added.

"They are still learning the game, and I explained that one of the things I have provided leadership all the way through myself. I am better when I have control.

"I am not a power freak. But my point is that I need to feel that I can manage it in terms of the team and I have a direct clear line through to the owners. Once that becomes hazed and grey, for me there is a problem.

"So yes, the new players that come in will be my signings, It's very simple - you've got a manager and in and around that you've got different departments.

"When you are at a club of this status and of this size there's no one person in charge of everything. But it's absolute madness if you are the manager of the club and someone else tells you to have that player, it doesn't work."

So why appoint a manager who doesn't want to work within your structure?

The bit I didn't get with the Ian Graham piece was that FSG and the club knew Rodgers played with a target man. At Swansea it was Danny Graham holding the ball up and bringing others into play. For me if you are going to bring in a coaching fundamentalist like Rodgers then you have to go all in. Rodgers quite simply didn't have the track record to have so much control at one of the World's biggest clubs. He didn't have a track record of winning things and more importantly he hadn't demonstrated that he had a keen eye for a player.

That is why we ended up with the half-arsed TC and people taking turns at picking players.

This brings us to Slot who is very much a coaching fundamentalist like Rodgers and like Klopp. The issue now is that there are only a small pool of players who are the right fit for a Slot team. We have to hope that Slot and Hughes can end up on the same page and bring in the players Slot needs and not just players who have good numbers and who scout well.

Well, hopefully we will use the Suarez money to get in a good replacement. I trust the TC will get someone good in.
